Default Need some DeepCurl advice

I shoot the 300gr DCs out of my Omega with exceptional accuracy, so I'm good there. My buddy is just getting into muzzleloading and I want to start him on DeepCurls since they perform so well on game and are reasonably accurate. The thing is that he is pretty recoil sensitive, so it's probably best to steer him away from the 300gr bullet. Has anyone had success with accuracy using a 40 cal DC in a 40/50 sabot? Any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated.

I have shot the 40-180 grain Speer a lot from a 45 but can not remember shooting it from a 50. I know I must have but it must have worked fine or I would remember that. From the 45 it shoots excellent and I really think it would a fine shooter with the MMP 40x50 sabot. That sabot is thicker than one thinks so that it will compress in the bore grasp the bullet tightly preventing slippage in the sabot.

I am a T7 shooter but if you are a BH shootther that might be even better since BH is progressive the recoil could even be a bit milder.

Depending on the range you might need to attain, 90 grains of T7 or BH would be a good place to start. I shoot them with 110 grains and the nosie is far greater than the recoil...

Just remember in 40 cal - I think they are still called a Gold Dot not a Deep Curl.

If you want to stick with the Deep Curl, the load I have set up for my dad (who has a bad shoulder) is the 250 grain Deep Curl, 70 grains T7 shooting out of a CVA Wolf. Recoil is very tolerable. He has taken 1 deer with this load and it performed great. It would probably be a 100 yards and under load, though.

I also have had a lot of success loading the .40 cal 200 grain XTP with the MMP blue .40/.50 sabot with 70 - 90 grains of T7. With 70 grains the recoil is similar to that of a .410 shotgun. I've taken 4 or 5 deer with this setup, and the XTP does a great job at these velocities.

Also consider the .44 cal 240gr deep curl with a green sabot. Basically a scaled down version of the 300gr bullet. Shoots well in my X7 Omega. Comes in boxes of 100 at a good price. Mine gets best accuracy with 110 grains of BH209 but you may find a good powder load if you start much lower and work up in 5gr increments.

Thanks everyone. hubby you touched on where I was going to go next. I see the .44 DCs/GDs and also see 45 cal (.451 dia) options all the way down to 185gr. Any thoughts on how those might be expected to perform?

Also, Midsouth Shooter's Supply seems to be a great one-stop shop for bullets, sabots and other ML accessories. Any other recommendations?

Do not over look the 250 gr Deep curl I shot all the deep curls at the range but the 250 is my go to bullet it woks well with 70 grains up where as a lot of bullets I have tried including many of the Deep Curls do not preform well with light loads, the other one that did well with light loads was the 40 caliber 200 grain. Some do not open with light loads.

Lemoyne, interesting point. I have always been a little suspect of the 250gr 45cal Deep Curl because of the very deep hollow point. It seems to me that it might expand too much in a deer and maybe fall apart. But I can see how that deep cavity would be a plus at lighter powder loads. Conversely, I can see how maybe the .44 cal/240 grain (and the 300 grain) with its shallow hollow point, might not open up as readily at lower powder loads. This makes sense since the 250gr is for the Colt 45 and the 240 and 300 are for the .44 mag and .454 casull respectively.

7.62NATO, I've no experience with the lighter bullets either in .45 or .44.
