Default Leaving a Charge In?

My last two hunting season I have had no problems with leaving a charge in my inline. But that was with BH209. What is everyone experience with leaving a charge in with a flintlock or percu? Also with the powder being Pyro or Goex? Would Goex absorb the humid air and rust? Just curious what your guys experience was.

You may get rust depending on conditions, or you might not.

That's a politicians answer.

You might work your way through this thread... Leaving a charge in the barrel is my normal routine, but I shoot T7 which is not near as corrosive as the other subs or BP. So I really can not say much about the other powders...

At the beginning of the deer season I load three or four guns with GOEX (clean dry barrel, no cap snapped). Those loads stay in the gun until I shoot something or the end of the three-month season (sometimes well after the end of the season). Never had a rust problem. Never had a misfire. On the caplocks, I remove the cap at the end of a day's hunt and lower the hammer with a patch over the nipple. On the flinter, I brush the powder from the pan and lower the frizzen on a patch.

Keep the muzzle covered and the moisture out, you'll have no problems.

With my flintlock, i used to use a toothpick, stick it into the flash hole and close the frizzen down over it to hold it in place while it was in camp.

We have a 2 week mid-December deer season and I've never had a misfire
with Pyrodex P or APP fffg, and I load a rifle for my son to use too.
The muzzles are covered with the tip of a balloon and at night the rifles are
left in a cold hallway.
Sometimes the guns don't get discharged until a week or two after the season
with only the #11 cap being changed.

Except for the hygroscopic powders it should not be a problem, I use Blackhorn and Pyrodex and leave them in for our muzzleloader season [3 weeks] and have never had a problem. I load with the gun clean and dry and unless it is an oil patched ball I cover the end of the barrel with a thumb cot and put an expired 209 in the inlines and a rubber nipple cover on the Traditional rifles. The best buck I ever got was taken in a downpour with a custom made Hawken 54 caliber muzzleloader.

My guns are often left loaded for months at a time. They always go bang when they are supposed to. I sometimes run a slightly oily patch down the bore of a loaded gun. Never had a problem with rust.

If you're going to leave a gun loaded, make sure you and everyone else will know it's loaded (even if you suddenly and unexpectedly get called away to the big hunting lease in the sky).
