But, the Mountaineer will not have what we think of as the Lehigh conversion. It will have a complety new bolt and bare primer breech plug (probably built by Lehigh - i say probably because so many things that I thought were coming are not), which I am being told is not backwards compatible.
I noticed you have stayed pretty quiet as of late. Well the realities of the marketplace prevent a lot of good things from happening in this day and age.

My understanding of the Mountaineer's bolt and breach plug is...The bolt is unique to it and will not fit in an Extreme or LRH action. At least its not just a swap and machining would be needed if it was possible. TB even mentioned he tried a prototype Ultimate Slam bolt and bp in an Extreme or LRH and it would not work.

I "believe" Lehigh had some kind of input in the breach plug design/production and matching it upto the new bolt. I hope they adopted a vent liner style too and saved us the time of doing the mod anyway.

IMO they should have enclosed the primer a bit more like the Lehigh adapter but i haven't seen a pic im sure is an actual "production" model pic. The prototype had a bit less of an opening IIRC.

I like the Shadow Gray laminate Mountaineer but it just doesn't quite offer enough improvement over my current Knights. Until i have more solid info on its design, i can live with what i already have and the Lehigh conversions. Im very interested in getting one of the non TH laminate stocks though if i can make it fit my LRH/Elite and add another bedding pillar.

Well stated GM and this is why i am asking questions. seems to me right now one would be better off buying one of there older rifles and converting it. just a thought and a lot less expensive to boot.

They didnt offer anything I really wanted with my current info YET. May's announcement (if any) might be different. Offer me a Mountaineer in fast twist 45cal that is a "competition grade gun" and i would be all over it.

But...
Someone looking for a $550-$800 muzzle loader may find something he really really likes and it wouldn't surprise me a bit. They have several guns that fit that market segment and the bang for the buck should be on par with similar priced NIB guns. The new Extreme laminate with a Lehigh NFPJ should make almost anyone very happy for just under $600 if you got the cash. .

GM,since you mentioned laminate lol.the more i look at there line of guns, the more i am inclined to think targeting there rifles for the upper end crowd.don't get me wrong laminate rifles are eye candy. problem is i like synthetic stocks and IMHO all the older knight rifles sported the best synthetic stocks made. very solid and excellent quality. even the one they slapped on the wolverine was excellent quality.

I prefer a composite for hunting too and if its on a sled at the range. I kinda prefer buying a new gun with a standard laminate though if the price isn't much different because getting a laminate later can be expensive or REALLY hard to find. Laminate THs though are usually too heavy so i avoid them unless its a really good deal.

I kinda like the quality of the older Knight composites too. My MK's is very good quality and really light but its very plain jane.

I've got one of the very early Disc Extremes. I love the way it fits me and it's accurate. I don't like that it's dirty. I haven't tried the lehigh conversion yet, but have tried different primers, teflon tape, and with or without the disc the breech/bolt area always ends up filthy. I'm okay with this to an extent, but then seeing people with various guns that can shoot 20 shots and it still looks virtually unfired, I get a little jealous. Not that I really mind cleaning, but specifically in and around the threads for the breech plug on the barrel is where I spend the most time cleaning.
At least for now I think I'm going to wait until May and hope at least one person will buy one and write a thorough review of it. Or that they will offer something different in May.

Try the Lehigh NFPJ, its only $39.50 shipped and if you don't like it im sure you can sell it in the classifieds for about what you paid for it. I got mine because i wanted a clean breach. Now i like it more because all the flame gets to the powder and ignition is the best ive seen.

IMO it nearly removes the variable of pressure leaking and it could have performance benefits too. My Elite 45 seemed to get a fps boost and tighter groups with BH209 too. The clean part is now just a very nice side effect for me during long range sessions.

From what i have read and seen the $40.00 is money well spent, and very reasonable considering the quality.

I thought you all might like to see this. I sent Knight an email to ask if the breech plug and bolt on the Mountaineer were in fact new or just repurposed, and also if there was any other models coming out later this year. This is what I got back.

Mr Horn
Thank you for contacting Knight Rifles and your interest in the new lineup! Currently what is on the website is what we will out available this season. The rumors you hear may be about next year, which we do have some plans on another new gun.
The Mountaineer will come with a new stainless steel breech plug by Lehigh Defense, and is a far superior breech plug in performance. Also, the bolt is a new designed for bare primers that self-extracts the primer once the bolt is unloaded.
We are hoping to have more detailed information on the website about this shortly.
Thanks!
