Default The Other Gold Dot

Over the last few years I've shot close toa thousand 250 and 300 grain .452 Gold Dot hollow points - mostly 300s.

Now for the first time I've acquired a couple of boxes of the 44 caliber (.429) 270 grain Gold Dot soft points and some HarvesterH5044Ggreen sabots to pair them with. These are nice looking bullets. They have a 1/4" flat point where the lead isexposed, but the jacket goesall the way up to the edge of the flat area. I'll be trying them in my next range session with the Mustang and X7.

I kind of like the idea of the 270 grain weight. Have any of you guys used these? I'm especially interested to find out if they expand and hold togetherthe same way the hollow points do.

I tested a few, [not on live game] they seem to me to open slower than the hollow points, they grouped well for me in the Omega and I think they would be a great bullet for elk or moose or buffalo. Lee

I tried them in my Black Diamond XR. They were very accurate. But at longer ranges they started to open up more then I liked, so I went back to Shockwaves.

Hey Lee,Ihope they're not builttoo tough. Speer lists them ashandgun hunting bullets so I figured they would be suitable for whitetails. We haven't seen any elk or buffalo down here in Louisiana since the 1800's. Never hadany moose. So I'm outta luck for those animals.

I don't want to go theMountainDevil bullet modification route andstart drilling tiny little holes in the flat point (one in the center?or three evenly spaced in triangle formation?) If I glue a small pistol primer on theflat do you think it would detonate on impact and help the bulletexpand faster?

(Sorry about that Devil.)

Cayugad, do you recall the details regarding the ranges and group sizes?

If you drill a hole that a mag rifle primer will fit in and epoxy it in place with a BB epoxied top dead center it will open in a big hurry when it hits some thing. Lee

Now you're talking Lee. But you would have to be mighty careful ramming it down the barrel.
