Default are these laser sighters any good?

im new to muzzleloaders ive only hunted with shotguns until this year i used a buddys muzzleloader this year so i could extend my season, usually after shotgun season was out i was done for the year but tried it out and loved it, nothing like dropping a buck 150 yards out rather than waitin for it to come in closer and it never happens, anyway i went out and purchased a knight and a scope for it and im going to sight it in, i was up at wal-mart and noticed the had a laser device that is inserted into the end of the barrell it says it will work for .22 cal up to.50 cal being how my muzzleloader is a 50 cal will this thing work?, and if it will is it worth even using? will it sight it in without shooting?

Bore sighters will get you close but there is no replacement for taking the shot.

If you do a lot of scope swapping or plan on adding scopes then they might payfor themselves. If you are going to use it one time - then i-do-not-know...

Never owned a "bore-sight" of any kind as I never saw the real need for one. A shot or two up close (10-15 yards) is about always "on-paper" and allows you make any adjustmentsto get it "on-paper" at 25 or 50 yards. At that point you're probably as close as the laser would be, anyway.

Will the laser bore sighter work? Sure it will. Is it worth it? I don't think so. Can you sight it in without shooting the rifle? Absolutly not. All the bore sighter will do is put you on paper at 25 yards. While they are handy, they are not something you use a lot. And never think that because you bore sighted your rifle that the scope is dead on anything. You have to shoot the rifle and develope the load.

Put your rifle in a cardboard box with a V cut on the two opposite ends. Remove the breech plug and sight through the bore of the rifle at a spot on a door or a door knob about 13 yards away in the house. Without moving the rifle, now adjust the scope to that same spot. That normally will put you on paper at 13 yards where I start my sight in process. Normally you would be on paper at 25 yards as well.

At 13 yards shoot your load. Follow all the loading procedures. You should cut a hole in the paper. Adjust the POI to the bulls eye. Now move back to 25 yards and try the rifle there. It should be just over the top of the bull. Keep working distances until you know the rifle, the load, and the drop of the bullet. Adjust your scope at the distance you want to shoot the scope dead on at.

That is a good rifle you got. It should tune in real fast.

Do they work? Yes ,but they are only designed to get you on the paper.
Are they worth it, not hardly, pull the breach plug lock down the gun look through the bore center a golf ball at 25 yds move the crosshairs till the vertical splits the ball and the horizontal cross the upper edge. Take it out and shoot a 50 yd target group 5 move to desired point. Lee

I just picked up one for me, with the problems I had this last season. I need some thing for a quick check. as long as it is close I be happy.

I picked one up at WallyWorld when I put the new sights on the Trade Rifle. Like Cayugad says, it gets you on paper at 25 yds or so. Just in the neighborhood. You can adjust from there.
It came in handy when I changed scopes on the 30-06 also.
Remember though, it doesn't guarantee accuracy, just gets you in the ballpark so you can make the adjustments at the range.

Been using a rifle bore sighter for about six years. Last year i mounteda lot of scopesfor folks and sighted in many more rifles. The laser bore sighter makes the job much easier. My adjustments are made at 25 feet on a one inch target paster on a wall. The difference between doing it with a laser boresighter and doing it the old fashioned way is the fact that the gun is usually on paper at 50 yards: The 25 yard sighting in isalmost always eliminated. The gun is usually zeroed at 100 yards after6-10 shots total.

If you are sighting in expensive sabots for shotgun hunting or expensive bullets for your ML, I think it would be worth it. As someone stated earlier, it would really be worth it if you swap scopes out a lot.
