A muzzle mill goes over the end of the barrel as cayugad says to protect the bore and the load from the elements...

Or as Cayugad indicated you can buy a package of finger cots in the wal-mart pharmacy... but they are a little thinner than these...

My dad hadan opened can ofPyroRS that was in a dry closet for over 10 years and it still shot fine. I didn't use it to hunt but we shot it up target shooting... If it has stayed dry and is unopened should be okay. I bought new to hunt with however.....
