Default GPR Shoot Today

I was out today with my new GPR flintlock in 50 cal. I put a 57 GPR peep sight on it and away I went. I never adjusted the sights at all. Load was 90 gr Goex 2f, .490 speer ball, .018 TC Pillow Tick pre-lubed patch. I was shooting off a sandbag on a table. At 15 yds I was nice and tight, then I moved it out to 50 yds and things started to spread out a bit (lot). I think part of my problem is inconsistent sight picture. I've spoiled myself over the years by using scopes, so now I have to re-learn how to shoot all over again.

For a first time out you did real well. It all gets better as you become more aware of therifle, the sights, etc. I also suffer from that problem of.. are the sights in the same place. I went to a 1X scope and it really showed me my flaws...

Keep shooting. It looks like you had a lot of fun and it will only get better. That is a good peep sight you have there.

The other thing is you were shooting a flintlock. If you are not used to a flintlock, that really is some outstanding shooting. How well did it spark and ignite? That original agate that came on my Trade Rifle, if I could get more of them like that one, I'd get a hundred of them. That thing sparked perfect and lasted a long time.

Thanks cayugad. I find that the peep sight forces me not to look at the hammer and actually blocks it out for the most part. I basically took this gun out of the box, gave it a cleaning, put on the peep sight, took the originalrear sight off and went shooting. I'm really pleased with the peep being "on" right out of the box. Very suprised actually. I'm going to keep on shooting and get those 50 yard groups tighter. I have some work to do there. Once I get the groups tight I will do some final adjustments to the peep. No sense in adjusting them yet. Maybe I need a smaller target. Remembering Mel's saying, "Aim small, miss small."

One thing I noticed was that I had several "flash in the pan's" today. The pan isn't polished and is a bit rough so I'm going to polish it up with my dremel. I was using 3f Goex for prime. I cleaned the pan after each shot and plugged the vent before loading.

Once I tried to put a ball down without giving the barrel a swab and holy crap batman. I got it about 6 inches with the short starter and when I tried the range rod to seat it, it wouldn't even budge. I had to get my young fella to hold the rifle while pulled like heck to get it out. Seriously it WAS that tight.[]

Funny thing today. Another fella showed up with his 7mm and was shooting worse than I was. LOL

On my Trade Rifle, I keep the powder to the outside of the pan, and make sure to wipe the flint and frizzen off. I use straight alcohol to swab and wipe out the pan, frizzen, etc. I really have no problem loading a second shot. Try smearing a little more bore butter on that pre-lubed patch. That will many times help. Also as the rifel brakes in, it will get better.

I use 60% alcohol/ 40 % windex soluting for wiping the pan, then dry it with a dry patch. I then use that wet patch for running down the barrel once on each side. I try to keep the prime to the outside as well. From reading all of the posts that I can I can't the rifle to the left and give it a little tap.
I really like the set trigger as well and think that helps. The cock seems to be faster on the GPR than it is on my DeerStalker???

I got the DeerStalker about 6 months ago but my young lad has claimed it on me. It's a flintlock as well. Both left handed.

Funny how the young people latch on to a rifle and consider it theirs. Now you have to just shoot the pants off him..

It's ok when he snags one. It just gives me another excuse to go buy another one.
