Bore Butter

Okay, so what's the concenses about Bore Butter? Does it really work as advertised? Can you skip swabbing after every shot with 777 (or anything else)?
How do you clean up without removing the seasoning (and how about cleaning around the breech plug)?
Thanks for your input.

Seasoning.. I hear this all the time. I season a cast iron fry pan. I have no intention of seasoning a rifle barrel. Now if bore butter is used as some of the posters on here do, I am sure the results are excellent. I just do not have the time to figure this out, or just unlucky when I tried. All I ever got with bore butter is tobacco colored patches when I first swabbed the barrel. That to me indicated something was wrong with my procedure.
Bore Butter IMO is a good conial and patch lube. Nothing more. I use a good quality gun oil to protect the rifle bore after I have cleaned it. Again, just my opinion and you do what you want with your rifles.

you are going to get mixed thoughts on bore butter. I shoot an encore and here is my proceedure when shooting w/ 777, behind saboted SW's, hornady XTP's, Noslers, or the like. wet patch with TC #13 cleaner (windshield washer fluid mixed w/ rubbing alc. 50/50 works great too and can be made CHEAP!) follow the wet patch with 1-2 dry patches, make sure your barrel is DRY! Thats my shot to shot cleaning procedure. At the end of the day assuming it will not be used for a while, here is my clean up procedure. Pull my plug and let it soak in cleaning solution and scrub it w/ a brush, remove barrel and run a wet patch through to get majority of fouling. Next fill a bucket with HOT water and add 1-2 drops of dish soap. stick muzzle end into bucket and run a wet patch up and down to suction water in and out, repeat with breech end in bucket. Next scrub barrel breech threads. Take barrel out run several dry patches and ENSURE BARREL IS FULLY DRY. Next while barrel is still warm i apply a LIGHT coating of bore butter. then lube all moving part by the extractore with a little super lube and reassemble. Next i put some grease or thread tape on the plug and reinstall that. Finally i wipe the entire gun down with "lucas gun oil" its a red oil in a little bottle and works great! it doesnt evaporate as its about as thick as a 10W oil, a few drops go a long way!!!!
About the seasoning of the barrel.....IF it can occur it hasn't to mine since i clean it that extensivly. But i like a light coating in my barrel during storage, besides it smells good to me
I prefer BB over oil based protectants because it is water soluable and thats the biggest ingredient in my cleaning solutions!just dont put too much or it can buildup in your breech area. If you are shooting balls or conicals this is great stuff to use. Before i shoot i run a dry patch thru to ensure there is no build up of BB. usually a little bit always comes out. Hope this helps you

It doesn't season anything. For the record, it most certainly doesn't prevent rust. I, too have had my gun rust from believing in it. The ONLY thing it's good for is a patch lubricant. Don't try it for anything else. That's my advice.

It does and will work under the right circumstances, with PRB and Breakaway sabots it is NOT designed for use with plastic sabots. As with many other things you first have to understand how it should be used in each set of circumstances. Lee

Bore Butter - "the great debate"
I am a BB user it does work for me, its' main purpose is for reducing fouling, both plastic and powder residue.
lemoynehas used the right words to decribe ituse.
I do not use it for a lubricant, I do not lube sabots with it, yet a lot of people do and it works well for them, and I do not use it a bore protector in any gun that I am shooting sub powders in. I use it as a part of my barrel treatment regiment, actually in my ML's and my trap shotguns. For me the key to its use in a sabot shooting barrel is to apply it to a very hot barrel, let it get into the pores, then wipe as much back out as you can with clean patches. Do not let the product build up in your barrel. It is water soluable, clean out the barrel on occasion, by running hot water through and patches. I have never found it necessary to use a bore brush to get it out.
It does work - if you do your part asnd understand the application of the product.
I forgot to add, if you are goingto use to treat the bore, not as a patch or bulletlube, then there really might be a better product on the market for exactly that purpose. I am testing it right now and so far it is working great and one heck of a lot easier to apply....

I also am a bore butter user in all my centerfire rifles, shot guns and Muzzle loaders. Like Mike said apply it with a hot barrel or a hot patch. On my bolt guns I use the hot patch, On the shot guns, Hawkins and plains rifle I use the hot barrel method.Been doing it that waysince the mid 1970's with out any problems.

I've been using it in my Black Diamond XR for 6 years now and it works for me. I can easily shoot 3-4 times without having any problems getting the sabot down the barrel and seating on the charge (no I don't put it on the plastic around the sabot) and there is no decrease in accuracy. I'm not sure if this is due to the bore butter or not, but I'm not going to try and fix something that isn't broken!
