Default Using oversize patches

I ordered some.015pre cut .54 calthru .58 cal Econo patches from
a company. They were out of stock on .50 cal patches, so I was
wandering if I could use the 54/58 patches in my .50 cal as is,
or would I need to cut them down some for the fifty? Just wandering
if anyone has tried this and how itturned out.
I've got a .54 cal Ican use them in also.

Thanks

My guess is use them precisely as they are. At most, they'll hang out an extra 40 thousands on each side. I doubt the juice of reducing their size such a small amount will be worth the squeeze of making them smaller.

I use the slightly larger ones too. What matters most here is the integrity of the new Econo patches. If they are truly .015, 100% cotton and not diluted lube, you should be fine. I generally use Ox-Yoke or Bridgers Best.

If these are patches for cleaning the rifle, they really should not make all that big a difference. If these are patches to run ball, they still will not really make a difference. I have shot a lot of .54-.56 patch with .50 caliber roundball. If they do look too big you can always snip them at the muzzle with a scissors.

When you load and shoot a bigger patch, you will see them open up sooner and kind of float down to earth.. accuracy should not be all that different, but keep us posted.

These are dry shooting patches made by Eastern Main.
Sorry I didn't metion that earlier, just wasn't thinking.
They have a good tight weave and seem to be good
patches for the money. As for the .015 size I have no
wayto mic them, so I'll just have totake the Mfg's word.
These measure about 1-5/16" across in Dia.
I was worried that they may be to tight a fit forthe .50cal
and cause alodged ballpart way down the barrelwhile loading.
I sure don't want to deal with a stuck ball.

If you are using the"most-often-found" .490s, you will probably be fine. All that may be needed is a slight fist slam on the bullet starter handle to get them started in the bore. From there, they should slide down fine. If you have the uncommon .495s, you will likely encounter a tight fit.

Inspect those patches after shooting. My butter-lubed tickerswith hot 777 powder canpossibly be reused -- they look that good. Let us know how the Econo patches hold up. Do you have a website for those?

If this link works, go toward the bottom of the page and you will see them. I see they have the 50's in stock now. (Story of my life)[:@]
Yes, I will be using home casted .490 roundballs. I'm goingto lubesome
with moosemilk and some with (yeller playdough) oops' I mean bore butter.

Thanks for the help!
