Default 100gr recoil?

I was just wondering how much recoil is 100gr of 777 pellets, compare to a 12 ga standard 2 3/4 slug? What is a good load that doesn't have alot of recoil and still have enough power to cleanly kill a deer?

Wolf651,

Hodgdon's website has a FAQ with an equation. Not knowing the bullet weight, MV, and weight of your rifle, I can't help you calculate it. Also at the FAQ they calculate a 12 guage clays load to be 21.5 ft lbs. When I post recoils here, I always divide by that number and give the recoil as a percentage of a 12 guage clays load.

Happy Hunting, Phil

Recoil from 100 grs. 777 isn't near that of a 12 ga. slug and is more than enough to harvest a deer out to 100 yds. I have taken two with a Kodiak and a Knight at a measured 150 yds with 100 grs. 777 and PB Deadcenters in 240 gr.

Not sure I can compare it to anything but I shot 35 shots the weekend using 100 grains of T7 and the 35th shot felt the same as the 1st. Not sore at all. Defently not as bad as a slug out of a 12 gauge! [:@]

With 100 gr of powder my Omega shoots like a toy hardly no recole at all. But in my firehawk it kicks like a mule. The black dimond is some where in between. I guess what I'm trying to say is try it and find out. Mike

As Mike Hill pointed out, the recoil from 100 grains of Triple Se7en or any powder for that fact will be influenced by a number of factors. The make of the rifle for one. Some rifles just kick worse then others. This is influenced by weight of the rifle and design of the stock in some cases. I shoot T/C Renegades which are nice rifles to shoot but because of the stock design, by the end of the day shooting strong charges, my cheek bone under my eye is SORE!!

Recoils are also influenced by weather conditions. Ever shoot your rifle on a clear crisp morning and have it jump up in your hands, where as shooting it on a humid or rain day can (not always) be much different in experience. Also the amount of clothing you wear will effect the recoil. Shoot in a T-shirt VS a winter jacket and you will note the difference right away.

I have never found 100 grains of anything uncontrollable. It will all depend on how you address the rifle and you shoot. I keep the rifle butt firm to the shoulder but don't suffocate the rifle with a power grip. This allows the recoil to move a little through the rifle and me.

Most of all get out there and shoot it. It should not be too bad..

Can't add anything really the other fellas haven't. Just give it a try.I think you should find it acceptable, but remember shooting form. Stay relaxed, tuck the butt to the shoulder, focus on the target area and just let it happen..no forcing it. If you tell yourself to be concerned with recoil it will increase the felt recoil. Ever wonder why you don't feel the push in the field? Simply answer it doesn't enter the equation. The mind is a powerful weapon!

If you do find it more than you like, an aftermarket recoil pad such as the sims limbsaver or pachymer decelarator would help.

As far as the load 100 gr pellets with 240-300 gr bullet will be more than effective to harvest deer. The max range is dependant on the shooter more so than the load itself.

Wolf-I have an Ithaca Mod 37 deerslayer with a 20" barrel. It is very accurate out to 100+ yds.I have never put any load in a MZ that will even come close to the recoil of that mankiller. I guess it all depends on the rifle and bullet weight.

I've shot my Staghorn w/100gr 777 and 240 & 300 gr sabots. None hurt as bad as a 12ga slug. In fact... I was at the range with my CVA Buckhorn the other day - the one that didn't blow up - the most I loaded it with was 90gr Pyrodex & 289gr bullets, and some 385gr conicals with 80gr pyrodex. While letting the barrel cool, I shot a few KO slugs out of my 870 with a rifled barrel, and they hurt a LOT more than anything out of the muzzleloader. I think you'd have to put 100+gr 777 behind a heavy conical, to boot you as hard as a 12GA Brenneke.
