Default Another Range Report (Omega 50)

Spent the morning on Strychnine Creek this morning shooting... gosh it is so relaxing just put on the ear plugs and shoot. The ear plugs seem to block out everything in the world out except shooting.

My first project was to sight in a Winchester 270 featherweight for my son-in-law... now normally in the old days I would have been all over this project I love to shoot - today I just wanted to get it done with the minimum of shots and get on to the fun stuff - the Omega

I pounded the same target as i was using for the 270 did some changes on the scope setting and decided I would put up a new target for the last bit of shooting...

Couple of things I noticed
1. the new spin jag worked really well both at seating the bullet and at patching the bore. Since the Omega has QLA -itprobably is not as important as it would be with a regular barrel, but the fiber washer did keep metal to metal contact on the edge of the barrel at a minimum even though I was using it as the short starter. It was nice to be able to hold the range rod tightly and no the bullet was rotating its way down the barrel.
2. QLA - none of my other rifles have one so I am still learning how to use this area and trying to figure out what to expect from it.
3.Almost forgot to mention - no problem with any type of "crud ring" I was easily able to load 4 rounds with out a problem....
4. An interesting problem? that occured last time I shot and today - after about 20 rounds- to release the trigger assemble became very difficult. The assemblyhas some sort of "over the center" latching mechansim and when it becomes dirty it is difficult to operate. Might have to add a can of powder blaster to my supplies if I am going to shoot a lot. Tonight when I got home sprayed and blew out the assembly and all works well again.
5. I am getting a very slight bit of blow-back up under the scope but it really is not bad, consideringI shot 33 shots today.
6. Tried a new capper made by TC for the encore/omega series. It is an inline capper - looks like a hypo needle - it works but it does not look real durable.

The 200 grain 10mm Hornady XTP's continue to be a joy to shoot -not much kick to them at all and they fly really well. I am really surprised the the POI for them with the same amount of powder is so close the the 300 grain Gold Dots.

The 44's - I have given up shooting 44's alomg time ago because I really felt I got better accuracy from the 45's - but new gun so I thought I would try....Well I loaded the first of 3 up, I decided I was going to shoot 3 no matter what, I was using a really old TC Mag Express sabot and expecting a pretty tough push down the barrel - well it slid down easier thant the .452's. I really thought that odd. Well I returned to the bench to shoot the first 44, all the time thinking this is going to ruin my target. Well I touched it off and it did - I pulled it - it is the hole@ 3:30 - 2 1/2" inches out. Well now I was frustrated but I continue to shoot the other 2. Well that's over - I might play with them some later...

All-in-all it was a fun trip... Sorry about anybody that did not get out to shoot today - but now I need to go do my house chores before my wife gets home...

Correct, you will get the hang of it really quick... The first time I did it I pushed them all out. But it much easier now - got it figure out.

When the little ruber tip wear out I am going to replace with the tip of a primer drop from a Hornady 366 reloading press. It is much heavier and will last longer.

I am also some what concerned about using it in the winter whe it is really cold - so I did order one those pencil type ones that holds 2 primer - that is wat I will use hunting + the four that are stored in the TCram rod rubber handle.
