Default How high at 50

I know each gun is different and so are loads so the best way to find out is to shoot. But I have a friend that is mostly limited to only 50 yards of range. What is a good starting point for him if he wants to be 3 inches high at a 100 yards. All you guys with the experience and equipment please reply and give me input. BTW his bullet is the 300grn XTP with a 100grns of 7772f just like what I shoot. Good bullet one of the best in my opinion. Thanks you guys

There is only one reason to be 3" high at 100 yards, which is, to be above line of sight at considerable greater range. Nowis it that your friend has a short shooting range? Keep in mind, that to take game consistently at 150 yards, one must actually shoot his ML to 150 yards at the range. I use Ballistics programs alot, but they are only aguide and should not be relied upon when shooting beyond ranges you have practiced at. For alot of reasons, ifoneis sub-MOA at 50, he can notjust protract the 50 yard precision to 100, 150, or200 yards. Wind, Velocity, distribution, sighting precision, all diminish precision at greater range.

That said, if you would be more specific, e.g. charge wt, bullet wt, open or scope, I give you a number at 50 yardswhich will get your friend in the "ball park" of 3" high at 100 yards.

Happy Hunting, Phil

Forgive me Bdeather, I see you have the charge weight and bullet weight posted. I'll use a MV from sabotloader's trajectory. Seems like this _is_ his load for Elk hunting.

For scope, sightingfor 2.5 " at 50, will put you in the neighborhood of 3" at 100.

For open, sight 2.75" at 50.

Pglasgow& bdeather

I ran that particular chart for a gentleman on the east coast, hence the low elevation, In Idaho I seldom see that elevation... The chart is based on opensights on Hawken type rifle and zeroed at 100 yards as per his request.

Pglasgow's computations would really beclose when trying to to compute the heighth at 50 yards for a 3" lift @ 100.
