cayugad, i think i dislike cleaning it so much because you have to remove the stock from the barrel, and to do that you have to remove the trigger guard, and it just seems like there should be an easier way to do it, a way without removing the stock from the barrel

And I am just on the opposite side of the fence. I like the fact that I can remove the stock from the barrel. I like that I can remove the trigger assembly because that way I am not pushing any fowling or cleaning crud into the trigger assembly.
Why are you removing the trigger guard from the rifle. In the near hundreds of times I have cleaned the Wolverine I have removed the barrel from the stock by the ONE LOCKING LUG BOLT and then the barrel and trigger assembly lifts right out of the stock. I un-screw the striker assembly and pull all of that out the back of the rifle. I then take the one screw out of the trigger assembly and that comes off the rifle. I can then reach in there and turn the breech plug out with little problem.
Also since the trigger assembly is off, I first wash that in hot soap and water. I then take that outside each time and spray it out with brake cleaner. Shake it hard a couple times and then spray it with some heavy silicone spray and it is clean, dry, and lubed.
After the rifle is cleaned and oiled, I just put it all back together. It really does not seem that hard to me....
