Default 58cal Conicals

Anyone know of any good 58cal conicals that are round nose or flat nose?

Whether they are good or not only your rifle would know. There are .58 caliber ball-ets, minnie balls, and R.E.A.L. conicals. Whether they would shoot well would depend on the powder charge and your rifle. I think some of the old style .577 military rifles did real well with minnie balls.

What cayugad said. I would also inquire about what rifle for which you want them? A .58cal roundball will take down almost any game animal in Morth America.

One I shoot in my .58 (actually a .577") which has a 1/60" twist, is the Lyman .57730, a hollow-based Minie that I size to .575". It weighs 570 grains, and has a flat point. I use 120 grains of FFg with it, and it is both accurate and powerful.

Here's one, sitting between two .45/70 rounds.

I've read you mentioning before that your .58 caliber is really a .577. Would this be a Springfield Rifle or a military type rifle? I have often thought of getting a Springfield Rifle with the 1-66 twist in ".58" caliber but I talked to a person that owned one, and he claimed it did not shoot anything all that well.He had bought his at Cabela's so I was guessing it was a Pedersoli. I offered to buy it from him but he would not sell. I've often thought about the big minnies if accurate would make about the perfect all around BIG game hunting load...

There is nothing I know of that could take a hit from the kind of load you describe, in the right place of course, and walk off too far...

thanks.

No, cayugad. My .58 is a 36" barrelled fullstock Hawken with a barrel from Green River Rifle Works. The barrel was made when they were in Utah prior to their moving to Australia. I believe the barrel was made in the mid-1970's. I do know it took me about five years of on-again off-again work to complete the gun.

I once got to fire a Colt repro of a 2-band CW Enfield, and thought it would have been a good hunting rifle. i shot it with a .570" PRBand 120 grains of FFg. It shot well, although a little high. I believe it had a 1/72" twist (like the CW Springfield had), and I have been looking for something similar ever since. But all the .58 short rifles and carbine repros (mostly Italian-made) I have seen so far had 1.48" twists, and I want a slow twist for PRB shooting ONLY. So to date, I haven't found the right one.

Right now, I only have one .58, and am currently working on a .73-cal Jaeger flintlock. It just needs the sideplate inletted and final shaping, so maybe it will actually be ready by next flintlock season!! I have proof-fired it, and it did fire!

WOW!! that is a beautiful rifle.. and it shoots good as well. Life is good there. Really pretty. Did Green River Rifles have something to do with Doc White long ago or was that something else?

That's a great looking rifle, eldequello! I am awaiting the parts from Pecatonica River to build my own .58cal fullstock Hawken flinter. What lock are you using on your Hawken?
