Shockwaves out of my Knight Wolverine
#1
For a long time I had trouble getting my Knight rifles to shoot Shockwaves well. I asked some questions on a different forum and some suggestions were made. They suggested I increase my powder charges and try Triple Se7en powder. I was sure I had tried Triple Se7en powder but...
I went back and read my notes on the Wolverine shooting Shockwaves and realized I had never tried them with Triple Se7en or Goex 3f. At least I could not find any notation for that fact. Also I had not really pushed them too hard. I have one notation of 90 grains Goex 2f as bad.
So I set the bench up at 50 yards and loaded 100 grains of Triple Se7en and a Shockwave in the Knight Wolverine. Needless to say I was surprised at the group it shot. So I cleaned the barrel and repeated it with 100 grains of Goex 3f.
I was surprised at how low the Goex shot compared to the Triple Se7en. In fact the first two with the Goex missed the 1" circle. So I gave the Sightronscope four clicks and tried it again. That time it was much better.
Thinking I might want to hunt with the load, I broke out the shooting sticks and put a new sticker on the box. I fired three shots into it and was more then pleased with the accuracy at 50 yard off the sticks. I could tell I was still not over my recent shoulder injury, and cut the range session a little short. We don't want to push it too hard since hunting season is getting much closer now..
Sometimes all it takes is a little help or suggestion from others. Re-examine what you have done in the past and you can get things up and working again. I have another stand overlooking a bigger field I was told by the farmer. So I want to do a little more practice at longer distances. But overall I am pleased with the results. I am getting tired of paying a dollar a pop for a Barnes Expander, and I do like the way a shockwave looks and acts in hunting situations.

I also made sure I could shoot without swabbing the barrel. Strange as this sounds, the Shockwaves slid down the barrel easier on a fowled barrel then on a swabbed barrel. Also that is my pair of shooting sticks there. Easy to make. Just be sure and put some nylon cord on the bottom of the legs so they do not spread out too far on you. Move the bolt to adjust the height for shooting...

I have the exact same gun and could not get those bullets to shoot well. I tried Barnes 250Gr Mz and they shot great. BTW I used 100Gr 777. Pictured is the result showing the Barnes bullet expansion. Note, I had a tough time getting these, seems like they sell out quickly in some places.

The Barnes Expanders also shoot very well out of the rifle. I just hate paying $1.00 each for them. In fact I started shooting the Barnes 250 grain Cannelure .451 bullets for the .454 Causall because they are cheaper.
I still have not taken them back to the 100 yard station but I do not think they should fall apart too bad in the group.

Yep,
I forgot to mention the price. BTW, how do you like your Knight Wolverine? I bought mine to see how I would like muzzleloading. It proved to be so accurate that I will be using it all deer season long. With my shotgun I would have a Max range of 75 yards. With my knight I feel comfortable taking shots to 150 yards. This has doubled my range and I could not be happier.

I bought my Wolverine II LK-93 because it came on sale and I always wanted one. It still uses the #11 caps and only has the 22" barrel, but this is one accurate shooting rifle. I mounted a Sightron Scope on it and will be using the rifle during our modern rifle season. The muzzleloader season we can not use magnification so I will use one of my other rifles...
This Wolverine is a great rifle. If I had to choose between it and my Knight Disc, just because of the bolt and the 209 plastic holders, I'd take the Wolverine.. It really is a great rifle. If I had to do it all over again, I would go after a Bighorn with the longer barrel and the 209 and cap ignition... I have read some accounts of them and they are real shooters also...
Good luck this year.

Anyone that dismisses the lil Wolverine is an idiot. The first inline I bought was an original 22", Timney triggered Wolverine about 15 years ago. I shot 90 grains of Pyro in it with 250 Barnes for YEARS and anything inside of 150yds was GRAVEYARD DEAD!!! I even carried it on an elk hunt in The Gila in NM in 98. My brother was with me and laughed at me and couldn't believe I would take a $200 rifle on a elk hunt in the Gila. He had a brand new stainless/camo disc and all the bells and whistles. Hmmmmmmm he killed a 270" 6x6 and I killed a 368" 6x6 that is still in the outfitters brochure and on his website, lol he aint laughed since!
For whatever reason I put a 209 kit on the rifle and started using pellets with 250grn Red Hots (Barnes). The rifle didn't shoot any better (1.5" @ 100yds was what it always did). But what the heck, it didn't hurt anything. I only retired the rifle lastyear after buying a Savage smokeless. The rifle continues to sit in my safe today and if I were leaving tomorrow on a hunt that didn't allow my Savage, I wouldn't hesitate to carry my "lil wolverine that CAN"! In fact if I were going to buy a new Knight tomorrow and it wasn't the 52cal disc (I spent a weekend at a 500yd range in Cody, WY lastyear with a factory Knight rep, DAMN those things are sweet!) I would simply buy a 26" Wolverine. I don't think the other Knights are worth the extra money for no more performance gain. A 26", 209 Wolvie will shoot ANY load at long range that you want to.
On rare occasions the cheapest thing a maker builds their best and I believe this is one of them!

I put a Nikon Prostaff 3x9 on mine. Got a Refurbished one from Midway for $75. Being a longtime hunter with deer only shotguns, it was a leap to switch to muzzleloading. After 10 rounds I was a convert. I feel like I can take a shot up to 150 yards and hit the "triangle."
Heck, I chrono'd the above mentioned 250Gr Barnes with 100Gr 777 at 1500 FPS! Oh yea, they expand just as promised.
