Do you fire a cap and or clean the primer area between shots? That might help.

I think Paul hit it right on the head. Before you shoot your rifle, be sure and run an alcohol patch through the bore of the rifle. This will help remove the oil, dirt, crud, etc. Then I like to push an alcohol patch all the way down the bore and rest it on the breech. Now is when I pop two 209 primers. This will blow all the oil and crud out of the breech plug. Also if you pull the patch and check it, you will see how good of a flame is getting through breech plug. Normally one 209 primer will blow the patch right back over the cleaning jag.

It sounds like the breech plug is not cleared. If you blow that 209 through there, it will open the fire channel and make the ignition faster. Also if this does not cure the problem, then check your powder....

cayugad,

Didn't I read a past post of yours about cleaning the ML with mixture of windex and water? Also, what do you use to clean inside the breech plug. I have soaked in the above mixture and then use the wire (thingy?) to clean the inside of the plug. I've been using 777.

Dog1 not enough enfo to reply in full but what Cayugad is talking about is cleaning before the first shot. You have to remove that wonderful oil that has protected your gun since you cleaned it. Alchohol cleans oil out real well and evaporates fast. The other mix he uses is for range cleaning between shots. Hope this helps.

Pittsburghunter is right on the money there... This is not an issue of swabbing the barrel to rid it of fowling during shooting. For that I do use a mixture of 91% isopropyl alcohol and summer blend windshield washer fluid. This issue centers aroundpreparing the rifle for the very first shot. The poster, heinz57 commented that he had a delayed firing of the ignition of the primer to the firing of the powder charge in the chamber. This is normally caused by something in the breech plug blocking the flame from the 209 primer ignition. The use of a pure alcohol patch in the beginning will clean the oil out of the barrel that we put in there to protect the rifle during storage. That same oil often times will collect in the breech plug and the breech area of the rifle. If you were to pour your powder in there with out cleaning the barrel first, if there were enough oil collected in there, it would begin to kill the powder charge down there. The alcohol patch will pull that oil out, and the setting off of two 209 primers before loading for the first time will blow that oil out of the breech opening up the fire channel.

heinz57 I guess I misunderstood you then with my first posting. If you have fired a few shots and then you are getting or still gettingdelayed ignitions, this could be caused by not drying the barrel properly after swabbing the barrel clean, or bad powder. It could also be bad primers, but I seriously doubt that. I would check my powder.

Is this some old Triple Se7en powder? The powder I have is real easy to ignite.

Also, what do you use to clean inside the breech plug.
I have a small brush that I use to scrub the center of the breech plug when I clean it. But to really get it clean, if your breech plug is like a Knight's or Thompson Center, I plug the hole with my finger and fill it with Butch's Bore Shine. Then I take a Q-tip and wipe the inside of the breech plug clean. Use a couple more Q-tips and make sure it is not only clean in there, but dry also.

If you are shooting a breech plug like what I have on my CVA Staghorn Magnum where there is no real opening through the breech plug other then a small pin hole on the chamber side end, I also soak that plug in Butch's Bore Shine or some kind of solvent. After wiping off the outside of the plug, I have some compressed air or will take it to the air compressor in the garage and blow all the crud inside that breech plug out. That will clean it so well that you can hold it then up to the light and actually look through the pin hole because it is no longer blocked.

I've been having the same problem. I really liked it last year. Now this year is sucks in the humidity. It's all sticky in my barrel and I have problems with it not firing on a follow up shot. I have to use two caps to get it to go off sometimes. It doesn't seem to want to group as well either. Maybe my powder went bad since last year? I have like a half lb left. Looks like I will be making some home made fireworks.

I just got a H&R ultra delux slug gun to play with this year and think I am going to use that for regular gun season. I think Pioneer will be in my future for next year.

You can dry out powder by leaving the top off outside in a safe place on a very dry day or put one of those things that come with electronics (dissecant pellets?) in the can as well. Pinnical powder comes with one of those inside of the can. I have never had an issue with T7 not going bang and going bang quickly.
