Question on the Buckhorn CVA
Friends,
A hunter on this forum just sent me a new CVA Buckhorn. I am totally new to BP and will be having a few questions. My first is I wanted to get comfortable in the disassembly . I noticed this model does not have a nipple ,it only has a breech plug. Is this correct? I could not find a nipple?

RE: Question on the Buckhorn CVA
Chuck,
You are correct in that there is no nipple on the buckhorn. It is a 209 magnum and you will need the 209 caps. Assembly and disassembly is quite easy and at first time consuming, but after you do it a few times it gets better. Hope that helps.

RE: Question on the Buckhorn CVA
That's correct. The breech plug is built to accept the 209 primer. Be sure and put a good anti sieze on the plug when you put it in the rifle and DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE PLUG when you put it in the rifle. Finger tight and then back it off just a 1/4 turn. If you shoot more then 15 shots in a row, take yourwrench and twist it back and fourth to make sure it is not seizing up. If you end your shooting session and it will be a hour or longer before you can clean the rifle, take the breech plug out or loosen it.

RE: Question on the Buckhorn CVA
im not 100% but i think a nipple is what goes into the breech plug to stop powder from falling out during loading. and after u load it u pull it out and put a primer in. im new to ml too but i know quite a bit. if u have a question make a post and name it "for cayugad" this guy knows EVERYTHING about ml. also i think if u dont use powder and u use pellets u dont need a nipple

RE: Question on the Buckhorn CVA
CVA sells a different breech plug that will accept the #11 and musket cap nipples. There is usually a order form in the back of the manual that came with the rifle. In that order form you can get the new breech plug and both the #11 and musket cap nipples mailed to your door by CVA. They are a nice thing to have. Some states demand that 209 shotgun primers are not used for hunting. In those cases use loose powders as your charge and that tiny #11 cap will fire it off without any problem. Musket caps have a lot more fire then the #11 caps but I find they tend to fall off the nipple more.
