Well i hope that 270 isnt too small. I am taking mine out to colorado this fall. I have a Remington Model 700 in 270 and i would never in my life trade it for anything. I have shot 5 deer in four years hunting. Never missed. Blew big holes in all of them. i have used Remington 150 core lokt. It went right through the spine of a buck at 140 yards. I found the bullet. It was a perfact mushroom. Held together perfactly. I was planning on using those but i might have to try the 140s that those people were talking about. I am going to see the balistics on them out to about 300 yards.

Any of these are offered in factory loadings..............
150 grain Nosler partitions (Federal)
150 grain partition golds (Winchester)
140 grain Failsafes (Winchester)
140 grainTrophy Bonded Bear Claws (Federal)
140 grainaccubond (Federal & Winchester)
140 grainA-frame (Remington)
If you can't kill an elk with a .270 Winchester using any of these fine bullets then you can't kill an elk and you should not be out hunting them.
And yet the RMEF endorses their HE 140 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw loading. Hmmmmmm!

Interestingly, go to Federal Cartridge and use their ammo selector. Select elk and they don't give you anything smaller than the 7mm mags to choose from.

Perhaps I'm just a tad cynical, but I have to wonder if this isn't just a troll. As EKM stated, a search of the forum should give plenty of info. While there's no harm in having the subject brought up again, I think that you might already know the answer to the question.
Here's a few examples. The person posting the info might look familiar. Please forgive me if this is truely an honest request for information.
04/21/04 – ELK GUN 270 ?
http://forum.hunting.net/asppg/tm.as...age=1&key=
I am sure lots of elk are killed every year with a 270. However, I suggest a quality 150gr premium bullet if you must use the 270. I rifle hunt (guided) in NM every year and the outfitter won't let his hunters use anything smaller than a 7mag. Said he got tired of chasing wounded animals all over the mountains or losing them. As with any hunting, it's the shot placement and bullet construction that bring home the bacon. For me, I use a 300 WSM with 180gr Nosler Partitions, but if you feel confident you can place a good 150 gr bullet in the vitals, go for it.

01/03/2004 - 7mm Mag complaints???

I have used 7mmrem mags and 7mmrem ultra mags on deer and elk, and they will easily kill these critters. As mentioned, you just need to match the bullet (type and construction) to the animal you are hunting and place the bullet in the right spot. Don't expect the animal to fall at the shot. Expect to trail the animal a short distance. It has been my experience that a 140gr partition, through the lungs, kill a deer everytime.

I have owned and hunted with both the 7mmUM and the 300 UM (sold both a couple of years ago). They are fine calibers which are intended for LONG RANGE targets (beyound 400 yds). They offer FAR greater recoil and muzzle blast than is usually considered acceptable by most people. However, either one will easily kill a deer, elk, or antelope if the shot is right. Your 7STW is also a good round which will take the above mentioned animals with the right bullet and correct placement. If you own the STW, you might consider sticking with it. If you are wanting to purchase ONE rifle for all hunting in your home state as well as out West, IMO, the 300UM is too much gun. The 7UM is loud and kicks quite a bit and the ammo is very expensive. The old 7Mag is a great caliber and will do anything you want to do either at home or our west. The same is true of the 30-06, 300WSM, 300 win mag, and a host of other calibers. You have probably hear the old adage, "beware of the man with one gun." I would suggest that you pick that "one gun", practice many times during the year, and become proficient. When you get to the point that you can hit your target from 50 to 300 yards, the actual caliber won't be an issue.

For the last 2 years, I have gone to CO for elk. I use a Model 70 Win, 300 WSM. My guide asked me what bullet I was using. When I told him Failsafes, he said they were not that dependable, but OK. The first year, I shot an elk at about 150 yards, using the Win 180 gr. Failsafe. One shot thru the lungs and that was it. So this year, I took the same rifle and ammo. I shot this elk at 244 yds, thru the front shoulder. Fell down, got up, and traveled about 90 yds before I could put two more shots into it. When I looked at the bullet path from the first shot, it went thru the right front shoulder, hit something, then went straight out the front of the neck. Almost no blood trail. Next year I am going back, and have already purchased some Fed Premiums with 180 gr. Partitions. Just my experiences.

I purchased a Winchester SS Model 70 in the 300 WSM two years ago. Since that time, I have taken 2 elk with the gun. Both one shot kills, using 180 gr Win Fail Safe bullets. The gun is very accurate (touches 2 of 3 bullets at 200 yds although I did add a custom HS Precision stock with the action glass bedded for additional accuracy), the recoil is a little worse that my 30-06, and I like the shorter action. I have used 300 Mags, with no complaints, but I prefer the WSM. Will the tried and true 300 win mag kill anything the WSM will? Sure. And the opposite is also true. Just a matter of personal preference.

I live in the middle of Elk country. Many people will tell you the .270 Winchester is marginal for Elk at best. Most of these same people have not used it for Elk either. Although I do not personally use my .270 for Elk, (That's why I bought my .300 Win Mag). The .270 is perfectly adequate for Elk, IF you use the right bullet! Obviously you do, or you would not have posted this question. Kudos for you, as you obviously realize the importance of bullet sellection! My personal vote is for the 140gr. Fail Safe factory load from Winchester. There are other good choices available, such as the 140 TBBC from Federal, any 150 Partition load, or the Swift A-Frame, or the new 140 Accubond loads from Federal of Winchester (I bought a box today at Wal Mart for 23.86). Bottom line, bullet placement is key obviously, equally important is PENETRATION! I have used the Fail Safe on many different animals ranging from Antelope to Elk. All have been quick one shot kills. I have YET to recover a bullet. EVERY bullet exited regardless of shot angle. Meat damage is also LESS than you will get with a typical soft point, or Ballistic tip type. I have also found these bullets to be as accurate as any Ballistic Tip type bullets. I also like the Hornady Interbond, and Swift Scirocco, but they only offer 130gr in the .270, which I personally feel is a little too light.

j3k2c1 - Good to hear someone else is using the new light mag round. I'm pretty impressed with the entire line. Have you tried any others or cals?
