I have owned and taken game with 300 RUM, 300 Win Mag, 300Weatherby. They all do an excellent job. Sold them all and bought a Win Model 70, SS in 300 WSM. It also kills elk cleanly, and is more than enough for anything else I hunt. One is as good as the other. Some just kick a little more, make a little more noise, and push the bullet a little faster. I doubt the dead animal can tell the difference. Truth be told, it's the person behind the gun far more than the gun/caliber. You should be quite pleased with any of them.

Fisher,
Why not just get yourself one or two of each, in assorted makes and models, then test them out, oh, say over the next 25 or 30 years and give us a report on your progress ever now and then. As a matter of fact, why don't i participate myself, gun show's coming up in april, i'll just start picking some out, we can average out this test that way, might come up with some pretty impressive results(at least that's the story i'm giving to my wife). I allready have the 300 winnie, bought brand spanking new in l974. A remington 700 bdl with 4x scope for $149.00, if my memory serves me correctly, oh if they only were the same price today!!!!

What speedgoat said. Give em twenty years and all the new will be worn off and some of the 300's will have went by the wayside. My prediction is the 300win, 300weatherby, and the 300rum will be the ones that stick around. I hate to say it but I think the short mags will be left behind. I guess in time we will find out.

As Colorado has said, the .300 Ultra mag will pass completly trough what every you shoot,if you use to heavy of bullets for the game, like deer
Improper bullet choice will deliver the same results with all cartridges. The higher velocity of the 300 ultramag actually increases bullet expansion.

Improper bullet choice always fails.
Based on any reliable data I can find, you can reliably load a 150gr partition (in .300 RUM) down to 3400 and as high as 3900. Either way or anywhere inbetween it is a horrible choice.
As our beloved BJ says, "plastic is fer wimmins pantees". Pantee tips will explode. Lighter partition style bullets are moving WAY to fast to stay together. Barnes X expand as low as 2200 (per Barnes) and you will end up with four petals and a stub at 3400. That RUM is just too darn fast for expansion on NA game sized animals.

I've had a 300 win for a while, and the animals I've killed haven't known what it was shot with. No amount of velocity or bullet weight is gonna compensate for poor shot placement. Make sure that you can shoot well whatever rifle you choose. that being said, I favor the 300 win, cuz it has been around long enough and is popular enough for you to get ammo and supplies for it, pretty much wherever you go. you can get a wide variety of bullet weights in factory ammo, and a wide variety of rifles as well.

Tikka .300 Win Mag. Put a Nikon Monarch or other top quality scope in the rings that come with the Tikka and on a good rest you'll be putting groups of 3 within a quarter consistently. You'll love it.
