Best 300 outthere?

I'm in the market for a new 300. I know I can always buy a 300 Win. but want to try something different. Anybody have any thoughts between the 300 WBY, WIN, WSM, RSAUM. Etc

RE: Best 300 outthere?

I have 3 rifles chamberd in 300 UM,2 remingtons and 1 winchester M-70.I like this round for about anything.I have 1 300 WSM,this is a good rifle just about as good as the 300 win..The only prioblem with the short-mags is you can get the performance with the heavy bullets,200 gr-220gr.
You realy can't go wrong with any of the modern .300 magnums, they all shoot flat, some just a little flater and faster.
I will put it this way this is how I rank the .300 magnums.
1.Lazzeroini Warbird(Big and bad)
2.Weatherbys 30-378 mag(kick you into a new time zone)
3.Remington 300 Ultra Mag(Fast,flat and mangeble)
4.Weatherby 300 WTHY mag.(fast, flat and a little more than the Winchester)
5.300 Winchester(Can't keep a good dog down)
6.300 Winchester short or 300 Remington SA ultra(I think these guns should have been named diffently like the ".308 Winchester Mag.")they are like the ".308 vs 30-06".The 308 is good but the 30-06 is better kinda thing going on between them.
Some where in there the .308 Norma fits but I have never shot one,let alone see one. That is about how i rank the .300 magnums.Hope this helps BBJ.

If you are planning on hunting, I am going to suggest you stay with .300 Winnie. I recently acquired a Sako in .300 RUM and have to say, at the velocities it produces, you are going to blow through whatever you shoot at, it is just too fast. Ditto for the .30-378 and warbird. I don't think you can load it down much and still get reliable ignition. If you want to find game, and then have to back off a few hundred yards, have fun. I don't see a role for those cartridges in hunting. Want to buy a SAKO 75 .300 RUM cheap? Every Garts in Boulder Cty has one for $699...

I would go for the .30-378 Wby. Mag., .300 RUM, or .300 Wby. Mag. in that order. Good luck.

300 WSM. Plenty of power almost pleasant to shoot. It still does pretty well with the 200 grain bullets.

My first pick would be the 300 win mag. If you reload you can work it even better.
I think the most important thing above all else would be how the weapon fits you. You will find your shooting more comfortable & accurate. Lengh of pull, drop and cant on a stock are very important. If you pick up a Seiko or a Sig you will be delighted with the palm swell.
Good Luck

i have the remington model 700 bdl in 300 ultra mag and just love it , it is very accurate shooting rifle, and the recoil isn't as bad as people say at least to me.

As Colorado has said, the .300 Ultra mag will pass completly trough what every you shoot,if you use to heavy of bullets for the game, like deer.
I had this happen 2 years ago,I was chassing elk and had a oppertunity to shoot a nice whitetail buck close in the timber, about 30 yds.At the shot the buck jumped and ran,I walked to were he wes and their was blood all over. After a long tracking job I found the buck, dead in is bed. When I cleaned him there was not much damage to the vitals, hole through his heart and lung.I was shooting a 200 gr nosler partrition,I hit no bone and at that range, velocity and bullet construction, the bullet never had much chance to expand.Since thet all of my shooting has been with 180 gr Nolslers or Siccoro's.I have shot deer, elk and antelope with it in these 2 bullet styles and they have worked ideal.

I now have my dad's old 300 H&H mag in a Remington rifle.
It's long, heavy and older than I am, but it still carries a punch.
I don't think any manufacurers are making this caliber available in any new rifles though.
