But there is no way you're gonna tote a .50 BMG on a hunt. Too heavy and too cumberson.

Another of my favorite bumper stickers. Seen in Montana and Idaho, but applicable in other places as well:
DONT CALIFORNICATE MY STATE
Over by Rifle, CO right along I-70 a rancher put up a homemade billboard the said :DON"T CALIFORNICATE COLORAD! but it didn't work. The idiots still came and screwed the state up royally.

Not quite correct. With bullets up to 150 grs the .308 and the 06 are ballistically identical. When you get to heavier bullets the .308 lags behind because the heavier bullet is longer and eats into the case powder capacity. But if you stuck well made 150 gr bullet from a .308 into a grizzly's lungs, you have the makings of a nice rig. Lots of them have ben killed with a .270 too.
Still, I thought a 30-06 was larger for some reason..
Tells ya what I know about ammo...

You're correct in that the 06 is a bigger cased cartridge. The 308 is an extremely efficient cartridge which is why the military adopted it. Because it is so efficient it holds its own against the bigger round until the bullet gets too long.
The 308 is also the base cartridge for the 7mm-08, the 358 Win, the 260 Rem and the 243 Win. Necked up or down it is and will always be a really good round. If I wanted a mid power 30 cal, I'd jump on a 308.
And it comes in a belt feed too. The M-60, the M-48, the M-240 and the MK-44 are all 7.62 Nato which is the military designation for the 308. The military knows what works.

The 30-06 and 308 are very close ballistically. However the 30-06 can be loaded to about 200 fps faster than a 308 due to case capacity. The 308 is a more accurate round but thats for target competition. For hunting purposes they are the same. Your AR-10 loaded with a good nosler partition or swift A-frame would kill a Grizzly with good shot placement no problem.
