Last year was my first Elk hunt (and I got skunked) but again I will be taking the Win. Model 70 7MM Rem Mag with a VariXIII 3X9. Currently working up a few different loads in 140gr, 160gr and 175gr.

Will likely use the same for Muley too.

If I somehow am chosen in Ontario Canada's future elk hunt (we have a very small population right now) I'll be using either a 270WSM or .308. Shots would be close (under 100 yards).

Several folks mention the 7MM as their choice. I didn't think you could kill an elk with a 7MM.

Sure you can......you just have to snare em and beat em with it.

Traditions Pursuit LT .50 Caliber with 385 grain Hornady Great Plains and 90 grains of FFg powder. I like this gun/load combination.

I am not sure that I have ever applied for a rifle elk hunt, though I have taken two cows with a muzzle loader, and have a tag in my hand this year.

Later,

Marcial
