red deer here is similar to the elk but I use a CMC Moutineer Howa .270 using 130 gn pills

I have killed all my elk with a 270. But I will admit it is a little on the light the side (power wise).

For 250-300 yds and under Ruger Hawkeye 35 Whelen or Rem 7600 35 Whelen, for longer shots would either be my FN Mauser 30-06 or Ruger M77 MKII 270WSM. Although I'd imagine that the 200 gr Triple Shocks would extend my ranges out to about 400 yds with the Whelen which is the most I'd be willing to shoot at game with any cartridge.
