Not a 45 ACP....better than nothing I guess!

44 Mag is what I prefer when bowhunting as a sidearm.......carrying bait to the stand can be dangerous!

Ruger Redhawk or Super Blackhawk

Ruger .44 Mag
Carry a 44 mag strapped to your leg all day in the mountains/bush can get heavy causing cramps in that leg, been there and done it. I pack a 357 3" ruger when hunting or deep in the bush, its not for bear protection though. Pepper spray is my choice and "go to" before the pistol. Even a heart shot the adrenalin in the bear will still kill you, what you want to do is buy some time between you and the bear as these bears will make false charges lungeing at you bluffing. A bear is like encountering a dog, some are timid and then some are like a junk yard dog. I really think your worrieing about something you don't need too.

I would probably pick the Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull/45 Long Colt. This lets you shoot up to 400 grain hardcast bullets with nearly 2,000 lbs KE. If you cannot handle that load you can load 45 Long Colt +P with 350 Grain bullets and up to 1,300 lbs KE. Which is equal to hot 44 mag loads. Standard 45 LC loads are great for recreational shooting also.

As a backup I wouldn't go with less than a 44 mag.
