I know this is vague, but what's out there for DYI hunt in Eastern New Mexico. More specifically an hour-2hrs max from Clovis, NM. Fiance has relatives there and Id love to double up on a trip to see the future inlaws and possibly plan for a DYI hunt. Just dont know what it has to offer, as none of her family hunts. All Ive seen is yotes, and prairie dogs lol. Thanks!

Check with game dept. in that state ahead of time should help. There are antelope and mule deer in that part of the country but not esay to get access to this time of year due to season or lack of time I'm sure.Maybe they can point you to a place to hunt yotes or shoot some dogs, still small game licience but always a chance. There is some public land near there I'm sure...I'm in Texas...very little of that here!

There is plenty of public land in New Mexico, but nearly all of the licenses are draw to my knowledge. If you wanted to research it out and plan ahead you could probably do antelope, mule deer and even elk within 3 hours of Clovis, but it would take applying for some licenses and some research.

No idea. There are 2 L's in Levelland. Some pretty descriptive names around here. Levelland, Brownfield, Plainview, etc...
There arealso several10,000 head dairies between here and Clovis.

This year they had some left over tags that could be purchased. I do not know if they have some still available or not. If you are on private land, it is not quite so hard. Ranchers get tags that they can sell or give to you then, you get your license and activate the tag. I am on the western side so, I would probably not be too much help to you other than what I have written.

Id love to take a speed goat, but Ive heard you can wrap up several grand in one of those on a private hunt. It will be atleast a year before I even apply. More likely the 2010 season. Maybe when we can get the kids through school, I can apply for an elk tag in the western part of the state.
Npaden...I know what you mean. Bovina fits that town very well as well. Ive seen the big dairy right there in MuleShoe. Any pronghorn around that area?

Texas is something like 98% private land. There are a few public hunting area but they have strict rules and are very crowded.
There is some BLM land in Eastern New Mexico but I'm not sure about the New Mexico hunting regulations. I'm just now investigating them for elk.
There are some antelope around Muleshoe and there are quite a few south of Clovis. There is some public land mixed in with large private ranches there but not sure on the access or how to get a tag. I know you can pay $$ and get a landowner tag very easily, and they aren't real expensive (less than $2,000 for the tag and hunting access). I've just never looked into it. You would have better luck in New Mexico than Texas for antelope in my opinion.

I wanna check into a speed goat hunt in NM. I think it'd be a fairly simple (in consideration of large game) hunt to cut my teeth on for a 'western' hunt. I love the idea of spot and stalk, just very little opportunity for it here in the East.
