Grease and meat and bakery goods! The grease Is great for getting scent dispersed from the bear walking around and the meat Is the best for getting stink out. Some bear just like meat, then the next bear like's just bakery goods. Every bear Is different, they all have a different diet then the other.

how soon before the season should I bait?????????
Depends on your area. Here In Minnesota there Is a date that we have to go by and start baiting on, no earlier. A couple weeks ahead of time Is plenty good enough If It's legal where you hunt.

I bait with bakery products, apples, and used deep fryer oil. I put out a scent ball 1 month before season and donuts (topped with oil)and apples on the weekend. The apples get hit last but tide the bears over until the next feeding the following weekend.

1 week before season, I bait daily to help setup a routine. Donuts and oil keep them coming in even when the acorns start to drop.

My son and I have harvested three bears in the past 6 years and we've both filled our tags within 4 hours of the season opener. This year's bear was 380 lbs and we typically have 6-9 bear hitting our bait pile daily.

I got this one on trays of chocolate donuts, hohos, cupcakes, snowballs, twinkies, zingers, etc from the bakery...(you can usually find a bakery that will sell you their waste for cheap...we got a carload for about $20-30). Also got bread (same bakery)and soaked it in fryer grease (picked up from a local restaurant) and molasses. Started baiting about a month before the hunt.

Grease is my #1, not only will it help disperse the trail to your bait, grease poured in a goody hole will keep them coming back after the bait is gone. They smell food in the ground and will dig a big hole looking for the food. I use 30-40 gallons of grease.

For my main bait I like to use power bars. I take 1200-1300 pounds into my set. I stay out 12 days to start a pecking order.

I bait in the spring and wait til late may or early june to get the set out because the big boars are on the prowl at this time.

My buddy Gage did a great article that I have on my website, click the link in my signature for more bear info...
