Hello,
Like most of the recent post-ies. I am heading out west for an elk hunt. Rain gear seems to be an essential packed item. Can anyone recomend a good set of gear that can be rolled up and stuffed in a day pack? Cheap is always good since we seem to spend hundredes on the clothing we'll wear the other 95% of th time.
Thank you.

I really liked my Herters lightweight raingear that I bought through Cabela's around $50. Used it on a recent caribou hunt and it worked very well. Tough enough in the bush, and not too loud. My buddy bought some cabelas stuff for about $95 and as far as we could tell, lining, zippers, pockets, hood, they were identical.

I tend to buy the more expensive hunting clothes. Clothes that are not only waterproof but act as my daily jacket and pantstoo. I take a lot things into the elk woods with me, rain gear takes up space and is only useful when it rains. But i guess its up to you, and how big your pack is.

I am a gear hog and have gore-tex everthing including a nice set of the Pac-lite rain gear....
but have found that I usually end up putting my stearns rain poncho in my pack. If it rainsa lot, nothing will keep you dryer. If it doesn't rain, it doesn't take up much room or weight too much and you can use it for other purposes, such as a ground cloth or something to wrap some meat in if the need arises!

over the summer bought beretta raincoat-- stood up to stiff winds, rain, cold on top of mount washington during a hike. great jacket, very lightweight/packable, perfect design. a little more expensive than the herters jacket, which looks pretty good. but, this coat was really worth it.
