What' s your favorite big game rifle?
#22
Elkkamp, I would not neccessarily call coyote " Big Game" , but while your toten 5 rifles in the bush, I' ll use just one, and as I have stated the Model 700 30-06.
Antelope=150 grain corelokts
Deer = 160 corelokts/Noslers
Elk = 180 corlokts/noslers
Moose = 180 corelokts/Noslers
If I am going out hunting big game, I am not going to be shootin no dang coyote.

I too would choose the 30/06, because of the variety of cartridges available to it.
You can hunt from antelope to moose with it. With confidence. Just hit em where they live. elknut1

" BEAVERJACK" is right . I would think that this bunch of hunters would know what a rifle is. And what a caliber is. And what a cartridge is.
If you asked what our favorite pick up truck is, would you then give us a choice of several engine sizes?
If you normally shoot a bolt action Rem. model 700 in 30/06 with a 3 to 9 variable scope, you might have voted for " 30/06" . But if I handed you a Ruger #1 single shot with open sights in 30/06 you might not want to go moose hunting with it even though you voted 30/06 as your favorite " rifle" .

123,
Shade simplistic,
I sure wouldn' t consider coyotes " big game" either but hey, since 22-250 is on the list, then somebody' s definition of big game is pretty small and I didn' t want them to feel slighted so I included something (coyotes) in their " category" ! Guess I was just trying to be sensitive. Personally I don' t consider deer to be " big game" either. If you can grab your " game" and drag it off without cutting it up, then - sorry - it just isn' t BIG game.
You' re for sure right that carrying 5 rifles would be no way to pursue any sort of game, then again I can' t remember a time EVER that I hunted more than one specie of big game animal at a time! So I guess I' m a one gun at a time hunter like yourself -- just pick the tools according to the job at hand!
BTW, good tip on the not shooting coyotes when pursuing the " real thing" .

Majority of my big game hunting has been deer. (Mainly Red Deer)
A big Red stag is round 300 pounds.
Also shoot Tahr, Chamois, Pigs, Wapiti.
Have tried most calibers and all sorts of rifles/loads.
My favourite gun is a Sako .243 shooting 100 grain bullets.
Not everyones " Cup of Tea" but I prefer close hunting and accurate shooting.
Majority of shots have been less than 80 yards.
More lately I' ve converted to 7mm-08 with 120 grain bullets. Mainly so I can take the occasional shot out round the 250 yard mark in Alpine hunting situation.
If the animal is further away than that, I just get myself closer.
I like to stick to one gun and get to know it' s performance in all conditions.
One shot kill ratio is around 80%
18% two or more shots.
2% Lost/wounded animals
Have shot around 500 Deer, 100 Pigs, 100 Tahr, 40 Chamois
