Over the Hip Shot!!!
I have heard of people talking about taking an over the hip shot on a bear that is facing away from you. Can someone explain this shot to me. Is this shot meant to be taken with rifle only or can you take it with a bow? Just curious.

RE: Over the Hip Shot!!!
That is what I thought, although I did not mean facing straight away but quartering slightly. Still I think it is not a good choice, but from what I hear from some others is that it isvery effective. I just dont know if they were talking about a rifle or a bow.

RE: Over the Hip Shot!!!
Over the hip to me suggests a heavy 1/4 away, as such not the best shot to take with a rifle and absolutely not with a bow.
However a slight 1/4 away shot is my favorite (especially with bears and the bow, as the vitals are tucked up further then traditional behind the shoulder of deer family game). This shot not only allows you to get into the vital with minimal resistence on the entrance side, it also gives you a great target line using the opposite leg and means the animal is usually not looking directly at you affording a little more room for movement.
