Personally at 400 yards I think the 270 is a little light but with a good rest & PREMIUM bullets kirkl is right put it in the boiler room=dead elk.Now on to some words of wisdom from BeaverCrack-"shot placement hooey","shot placement snot tastement",thats right BeaverLick just lay down a line of fire right?Speaking of educashun where did you git yours?Did someone write the word DIPLOMA on a piece of sh!tty toilet paper & hand it to you?I recon' ifn' they did your on honor graduate!Who in thier right mind doesn't agree with shot placement?Yea jes shoot at the animal if you hit it & can't find it go get another right?BeaverSweat, the ONLY thing you said that makes any sense is no one with out expierience should shoot out to 400 yards. The rest of yer statements about shot placement & a shot a bourbon to "calm the nerves "are just plain B.S.! As an ETHICAL hunter shot placement has every thing to do with bringing down an animal quickly & humanely! Save the bourban for after the hunt!Hey BeaverJerk go get a copy of HOOKED ON PHONICS & learn the English language!BeaverSmell,I would NOT want to be anywhere near you in the field with a loaded firearm, sounds to me like your a druken inbred that likes to shoot alot!

A 270 will kill an elk but don't even think about a 400 yd shot with it. If he is a one box a year shooter get him out to the range a lot before the hunt and tell the guide you want a 200 yd shot or better. My advice is borrow another rifle and practice with it, if thats not possible then get the best elk bullet that "Wal-mart" has. I think they even put little pictures on the box now that tell ya what they're made for. And please tell him to limit shots to 250yds, seen too many hobblin animals this year.

Mr. Ferguson, if your viewpoint is sound and your argument rational, then you will prevail without resorting to name calling.

Good judgement comes from bad experience! Half of elk hunting is knowing what NOT to do!

I'm sayin' placement is a misnomer. Ain't accurate. You cain't allays thread the needle ahind the shoulder an' into a guaranteed knockdown organ. Elkampmaster is tellin' it true. You aim at an' elk 99% of the time. You don't plan yer hunt around the other 1% when a needle-threadin' shot is possible (even less often fer newbies). All this placement stuff jus' don't ring true when you've seed as many wapiti go down an' run off as I've seed. A man needs to aim fer the center of the largest kill zone presented, learn how to shoot from real field positions, an' make it all automatic. Hell, I don't even remember shoulderin' my rifle most the time I kill anythin'. Ain't nuthin' bout what I said contrary to one shot kills. An' Turd, believe me, you DON'T wanna be 'round me ever.

I think what Beaverjack is saying is that elk, or any game animal for that matter, don't always present the best shot possible. You may not get that perfect sitting down broadside shot. You need to be able to put the bullet where it counts even if that is through the front shoulder or through the liver to get to the lungs and heart or through the brisket on a dead on shot. I will tell you that the failsafe is one hell of a bullet, had one go through a shoulder, break two ribs, take out the heart and lungs and exit the other side. The biggest bull that my father shot had to be chased up a hill 100 yards and then make a split second shot off hand standing up. He was so out of breath he fell down after the shot but he was able to put the bullet where it needed to be. In short your friend needs to practice alot in many different shooting positions.

Beaverjack;what you are saying about hitting them in the shoulder or heart-lung area is this NOT shot placement? Sounds like it is to me.

Easy guys, that ornery old mule p!sses me off sometimes too, but his cracker antics can be damn funny and I think what he's saying comes from some hard earned miles (and some hard hits on the head) Also, he types too well for an inbred - he's just messin' with his accent.

Of coarse you aim to hit them in the vitals...but all the talk about 'shot placement' doesn't mean squat, if you can't do it under real hunting conditions in the field. I've seen many guys at the range that group 1/2" BUT they only shoot off sand bags and never take one standing/offhand shot. I guess a lot of those same guys never leave their truck and the rest on the trucks mirror out the window...

Easy there Turd F.,
We don't need that kind of talk here.
Beaverjack is one of the most knowledgeable people on elk hunting I know. What he is tring to say is that you need enough bullet and gun to be able to make a quartering or less than perfect shot. I know from my own experience that elk do not offer perfect shots most of the time. So you may need to shoot at an animal that is not perfectly broadside. He was more tring to point out that you may not have time to take a solid rest, breathe, relax, aim, and squeeze the trigger on an animal standing in perfect position. Even with deer hunting the longest I usually have to shoot a deer is about 3 seconds. And as far as typing, it's called "dialect", god I hope I spelled that right. I'm not very good at speling ether.

"Hey ya'll, watch this"

Too many that only shoot off sandbags! At least they go out and shoot their rifles .Far too many people never bother to practise at all.I have seen many people show up at the range once a year and fire two or three shots in the general vicinity of the target then declare their gun sighted in and go hunting. Those type of people consider good shot placement just hitting an elk. They don't have the skills to shoot accurately at 100 yards yet they don't hesitate to start throwing lead at 400 yards. For these people it doesn't matter what cartridge they use as they usually don't hit anything anyways.
