Noisy Snow
Does anyone have any suggestions for hunting in old snow? The area we hunt has plenty of elk but because of the loud snow even hiking in and setting up way before first light seems to blow animals out of the area. There's always a lot of bucks and does around but it seems the elk which are more pressured split and all we see are their fresh sign.

Tell you what I do. I hunt early. When I do git busted by an' early storm (like the 2' we got this year), the onliest thing you can do is pick a good perch to watch some clearins' an likely routes. I git high on a hill near a burn, where I can see several hunnert yards in each direction. Then I can take a nice rest an' shoot as the elk git close. Stay well concealed, cause elk can see better 'an you think. Ain't no sense in tryin' to stalk. Jus' take a perch.

All you really can do is find a good spot and watch. Find a trail or watering hole with food and cover nearby and take a good pair of binocs. Make sure you can see a big area. If the elk hear you they will hide but they aren't far unless the area has a ton of pressure. When you are walking up to your spot take a cow call and just give it a call once in while as your walking and they'll just think you're one of them and won't spook much at all. Sit long enough and the elk will move, it may take a few hours so dress warm and take a pad to sit on.
