Thank you kodiak (mus' be yer chew). I been sayin' all long thet shot placement was hogwash. Ifn' you'd aimed et thet elk (er, I mean deer) on the shoulder, she'd been down an' yer's right there. Ain't no sense in gettin' fancy when puttin' lead into a critter. Plug 'em in the roasts an' use a good bullet.

I will weigh in on this topic, only b/c i am explosive bullet shooter when deer are on the menu. I usually only use fed. prem. BT for deer out of my 270 and 7 rem Mag. This year on a chance i tried the Hornady SST in 154GR out of my 7 Rem Mag. Main reason for the first in a long time they outshot my BT's at 100, 200 & 300 yards...so i just had to fly them this year. So pleased with my results i actually got 3 out of 4 of my hunting party to fling them as well (2 of which were 06 150 gr bullets). I won't go into to all the details but this bullet accounted for 5 animals of the 7 we took last week. The longest run was 150 yards through the left ham w a 06 and the blood trail was emmense (of course he got the Femral...lucky bugger) but still. The other 3 were shot in vitals and both blood and exits were very apparent. My buck took out the lungs/heart and damn near ripped the left shoulder clean off at 125 yards and never took a step. Now granted these weren't elk...but my deer tipped in at 300lbs dressed...so not a baby by any means. An the @ss shot buck tipped the scales at 250 mark dressed. Oh they don't work at close range that well, one buck was 35 yards and piled up in 25 yards...so I beg to differ. I have shot a BT style bullet at our large bodied wt and mulies for many years and if it don't put them down on the spot they rarely go far with a vital hit and the blodd trails is evident to a blind man. Hey take as you will but if you get a prem. bullet which is all BT's come in it will tear down a whiteail in short order and short and long ranges.

However if you take BJ advice to aim for the wheels...then stick to an interlock or parts...thats what they are made to do. However 8/10 say they aim H/L and the BT will put them down as quick maybe even quicker than those flat based bullets...with bigger holes=more blood.

We are still talking about whitetails aren't we..if not then disregard my comments.

What the heck guys, lets all just start shooting 458's! That way we don't even have to hit them in the vitals! Just aim at the deer and shoot <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>!

All I wanted was an opinion on what bullets would be best for me to shoot. All the deer I've got untill this year dropped dead in thier tracks. I just think it's odd that I never had a problem with deer dropping untill I started using rem. bullets. I am very satisfied with MY accuracy, I know my limits and I stick to them. I know what I can expect from MYSELF. I don't need anyone else to tell me I need to spend more time practicing!!! I'm not having any problems with accuracy and I don't know how this conversation got onto that topic.

Sorry I just had to vent. I've just read to many posts along the lines of &quot;if you can hit them right any bullet/arrow/gun will work&quot;.
A .22 short will kill a deer if you hit them in the right spot. I just want something that will work as best it can for my setup.

Hey Kodiak,
Remember that warning I gave you about the soon to be arriving sermon about shot placement? Don't loose sight of your response to to me which I was thought was right on! Don't take it personally these threads might start with your question, but take on a life of their own as different players that have went nose to nose under different posts now put in their viewpoints and their own agendas - which by the way is okay with me.

It's not directed to you personally, it's just kind of easy to &quot;get in the way.&quot;
EKM

Good judgement comes from bad experience! Half of elk hunting is knowing what NOT to do!

Sorry Elkamp, I just read too many posts all at once.I'll try not to take it personaly I know that these posts are here for everyone to learn from and not nessisarily only directed to the person who asked the question. I just bought a box of 150 grain power point winchesters. That was the bullet I was shooting before swiching to remington, never had any problems with them. Beaverjack, I think you are right about shooting in the shoulder, every funny looking elk with under developed antlers I've shot there dropped in thier tracks cleanly. I'll tell you all how these bullets perform as soon as I get another deer.
