Don't ever plan on hunting big bears, but if I did, I would choose a 50 caliber sniper rifle from a mile away!

Sorry, couldn't resist throwing some levity in.

Probably right about the 30:06 killing more big browns than any other caliber, but until you're 50 feet from an 8 foot or larger brown that is having a bad day you may wish you had a little more smoke than the 06. DM if your confident in your 7mm that's great, I'll keep my 375 H&H with 2 -270 grains backed up with a 300 solid and knowing the guide is backing me up with his458.I took a 7mm and 375H&H on my hunt.Seeing a small 6' grizz the first day within 50 yards ofcampthere was no doubt in my mind which rifle was going on the hunt.

One of the biggest griz/inland brown bears was killed by 2 Inuit woemen.
The story gose these two were out walking the pipe line in Alaska looking for a ptamigain or 2 for the soup pot. They happened to notice a 1100 lb+ grizz coming at them up the pipe line. They hid behind a brace and hoped the bear would just walk by.Well at 5 or so feet the big bear stopped. The one sister got scared and put one measly .22LR slug right down his ear.Killed the bear in his tracks.
Dose that make it a bear killer, just cause one got lucky.HEECK NO!!!
When you go after Dagerous game the rifle you chose is for you own saftey and the saftey of others. What you wan't is a gun to anchor the animal almost on the spot.
I have a freind who has a big bear in the books,he shot it up in BC back in the early 80's.He used a 7mm Rem Mag with 175 NP.He shot the bear from 150 yds,1/4 to angle. The bullet busted the shoulder travled trough a lung, the guts hitting the back leg and breaking it and the exiting. The bear ran more than100 yds to cover and cleard a alder patch to nothing but kinling in 20 yrd circle. They gave it about a hour and went in after him, when the found the bear he was backed into a hole with his nose facing down his back trail.
I know the 30-30,300 savage,30-06, 7mm rem Mag will work. But if you are going to be risking you life the life of your guide and anyone else have a little comon decentcy to shoot a gun big enough for the job.
The great Jack O'Connor once said the 35 rem with 200 gr core-loks was good Grizzly bear medecin. That was until he found the .338 win mag that replaced his 30-06 with 200 gr NP,he then stepped up to a 375 H&H.He thought very highly of the 375 H&H as bear stopper.
So to me the very start for big bears would be the .300 Magnums all the way to the top.For me personaly I have a sweet shooting 416 Rem Mag for the job if I ever get to go after them.

Guys there is no "perfect" bullet. Expanding Bullets are supposed to ,how should I say this, deliver energy and penetrate. The partition has served me very well. If you want straight penetration then you need to use a solid such as a Barnes solid. I've heard very good things about the tsx's but have never seen the need to vary from the old tried and true Partition.

As a side note, I spoke with a PH from Zimbabwe when he was visiting my father and he recomends the Swift A-frame for an expandable. He claims that they penetrate better than the partition. He also spoke of the Trophy bonded bear claw. Now he says that african animals are tougher than the average NA game and prefers more penetration and less expansion. For dangerous game he said he likes his client to load a expandable and a solid. The first shot is with the solid and the follow up with a bullet that displaces more energy. Though he said the partition is a reliable bullet he prefered the others. Just another very educated opinion (the PH's not mine).

An interesting story

T
he largest grizzly bear ever shot in Alberta was taken back in 1953 by a 63-year-old Native woman. As the story goes, Bella Twin was picking berries near Slave Lake when she encountered a huge bear that had obviously decided the berries were his for the taking, and his alone. Defending herself the only way she could, Twin lifted the rifle she always carried, pointed it quickly and fired. The great bear fell to the ground, stone dead, a single shot to the brain. To this day, Twin’s grizzly stands as the longest-reigning provincial big-game record in Alberta, and it may well never be broken. There are varying accounts of the incident, but all agree on one thing: Twin did the job with the humblest of rifles, a single-shot .22.
The story of Twin’s bear illustrates an unfortunate fact that some hunters push to impractical and unethical extremes—that a lucky or expertly placed shot from virtually any firearm is capable of downing even the largest big-game animal. From a practical hunting standpoint, however, few are the times that Lady Luck enhances our shooting prowess, and fewer still are those who can honestly claim to be expert marksmen.

I have successfully hunted Grizzlies with a 300 win mag. The guide I use carries a 300 win mag and has for 20 years. He has guided hundreds of hunts over the years. The knock down power is plenty with a 200 grain Nosler Partition. The first shot must break the bear down (break the front shoulder, both if possible). Then go in for the kill. You should always have a buddy/guide as a back up gun, and don't stop shooting till the bear is not moving, the last thing you want is to chase a wounded bear in the alders. Do the research on the ballistics of various cartiges and you will find the 30 cal magnums have the reach out and touch capabilities and plenty of knock down power. Call any bear guide in Alaska to check. This one was 8'6"

I watched a few videos of bear hunting...One was from alaska and the guy dropped a 700+lb polar bear from about 20 yrds away while hidding behind a boulder with a 222 shot to the spine.dropped him in its track...Then the video of a grizzly hunt,at 350 yrds out with a 30-06 busted through both shoulders of a huge grizzly to anchor it down then he shot it thru the lungs to finish it off...This would be the only way I would hunt them with any cartridge size...Bust his shoulders to stop his motivation and finish him off with another round..The front shoulders are large target area and you pretty much know he won't be able to reach you when you blow them out to get another round off in him to finish him off....I would do this for black bears to if was in a large pressure hunting area where he could run off to another hunter.

I personally would not fire at a grizzly at 350 yards, and the grizzly guides that I know would not let a client shoot at a grizzly at that distance.
