Turkey season will be a distant memory for me when yours opens. When does your season close? How many birds can you kill in Vermont?

RyanVT 04-12-2013 03:30 AM

Season opens may 1st and closes may 31. Usually by May 15th if you havnt got a bird you probably arent getting one cause they are done breeding it seems. Season here is way to late. But we are aloud to get 2 bearded turkeys in the spring.

swampbuster 04-12-2013 03:39 AM

On my way to work this morning I stopped by a place I have permission to hunt and I have a couple of turkeys gobbling their heads off. Hope they are doing this next weekend!

Talondale 04-12-2013 08:07 AM

Congrats SS and BBD! and RVT for the engagement!

Season starts tomorrow for me. Going to go try and roost a couple birds this evening. I then have two days off next week for chasing birds on some prime private land. Hopefully I can connect on a nice longbeard. I'll post back sometime with updates.

RyanVT 04-12-2013 08:31 AM

Post back after you roost them tonight please! hearing stories about having them on roost and going after them in the morning just gets me excited like im going with you lol.

superstrutter 04-12-2013 09:38 AM

Good luck Talon. Hope you get one. Ryan, I know it's killing you to get out there. It will be here before you know it.

Talondale 04-12-2013 09:42 AM

I'm glad the season held off. We had 6" snow this time last week and 80+ temps yesterday. Thunderstorm last night and a bit of a cool down. Hope that doesn't shut them down.

BB Outdoors 04-12-2013 12:13 PM

well season opened wednesday for me but the weather has been terrible. 30s and rainy all week and into next week. had a bird gobbling this afternoon but he wouldn't come in. they just aren't interested in the calling yet the way it looks. hopefully i can get one on the ground before tuesday when my season closes.

superstrutter 04-12-2013 01:38 PM

swampbuster 04-14-2013 09:22 AM

Went out to the same spot I was at Friday morning and did not hear a single bird. Friday they were hammering at every nose in the woods. This morning was overcast and not as cold. Youth season started Saturday hopefully all the birds didn't get shot by youth hunters

BB Outdoors 04-14-2013 06:09 PM

well boys i hammered one this evening at 6:36. 22 lbs 6 oz. 3/4inch spurs and a 9 inch beard. weather conditions were brutal this season and they toms just weren't gobbling. i'm pretty happy with this bird, i hunted my butt off for him. now do i post the score and picture or does the captain? he scored 55.375. i can't get the picture to upload. would someone be willing to resize it for me because i have no clue how to do it.

RJPOUTDOORS 04-14-2013 11:55 PM

BB outdoors congrants on the bird. Today was wild for my son and I as we called one off roost. This bird flew down in a small field about 200 yards from us and then started sturting in the cut out though the woods where the tractor goes. This bird seen our decoys and would not come in. After about 30 min. of playing with this bird I tried to stalk him. I was around 30 to 35 yards from him and almost ready to come to full draw when he spotted me, game over but lots of fun.

Talondale 04-15-2013 05:40 AM

Sorry for not posting back RVT. I went out to roost some birds Friday night and didn't hear a single one. The wind was picking up but skies were clear. When I got back to the house I got my gear ready for the morning but couldn't find my license. A frantic search ensued with me checking everywhere. I finally found it where I normally place it at the end of the season but something had covered it up. My National Forest stamp was expired, that day, and I had to go online to buy another. After all that it was well past time for me to be in bed.

Next morning I got to the road I wanted and some joker had closed the gate (national forest gate). I opened it up and went on up. Without a gobble the night before I was torn between two spots ( a creek and a bench) so I got set up between them where I could hear both and pull them to me. Wind was steady now and making it hard to hear, not to mention a little chilly. Didn't hear anything for the first part of the morning but heard a gobble around 8 AM coming from the direction of the creek. He didn't respond to my calls and sounding like he was moving up the creek. I was trying to decide on moving on him since past experience told me where he was going. Two other hunters walking up to the bench a few minutes later made the decision easier. I walked around the mountain to where the creek goes into a steep hollow. Before entering the hollow I called to try and pinpoint the gobbler. Last year, in almost the exact same scenario, I had got impatient in the last 100 yards and walked right up on them. A gobbler cut off my call. Unfortunately, instead of being up ahead of me in the hollow he was straight below me about a hundred yards away on the creek. I was backlit by the sun and as I tried to setup he spotted me and I saw 3 gobblers heading for dodge on the other mountain. Nothing else was seen or heard that day.

I had to come in to work this morning and will leave at lunch. It's raining and my buddy is out hunting in it. Rain possible in the AM tomorrow and nicer on Wed, 80 degrees. We can only hunt until Noon until May. Will be offline for the next 3 days. Hope to connect as the birds on the farm we are going to are unpressured and dumb. :)

Talondale 04-15-2013 07:40 AM

Congrats BB!

Nice job. I'll post the score. You can resize the pic on paint. Just hit skew and resize it. It may be easier to put the pic on desktop then resize it. Congrats on your bird.

swampbuster 04-16-2013 03:34 PM

Congrats bb on your turkey!! I'd take one like that every year

Bucktail_Bob 04-16-2013 04:07 PM

Got your score submitted BB. Now go get another one. I will be heading to north Texas Friday morning to hopefully get one more Rio. Good luck everyone.

swampbuster 04-17-2013 12:18 PM

I have been listening to this turkey gobble for the last few mornings and afternoons while sitting in my driveway. I hope he keeps it this weekend our season starts!!

BB Outdoors 04-17-2013 06:22 PM

Now I just have to wait until May 8th before I can hunt again. Hopefully it comes quick!

Talondale 04-18-2013 06:57 AM

We had some hard hunting. Walked miles each day and had hundreds of acres of private property to hunt with no one else around and we couldn't find the birds. Only gobbles we heard were way off. Some of the land had been thinned but by the looks of it more than a month ago. We only saw one hen. Not sure what the issue is but a lot of times this place is peep quiet early in the season. Will be going back in a couple weeks. Hopefully better then. Still had fun and beautiful weather.

swampbuster 04-19-2013 05:31 AM

I have been working on a game plan to go after that turkey that I have heard gobbling by my house. He has always been within a hundred yards from we're he roosts morning and afternoon. This morning I heard him gobble the total opposite direction.

Get in there early early early with a decoy and wait..then call. Walk in ultra quiet if you know where he's roosted otherwise he will sense something isn't right and head the opposite direction of where you came from. 2 years ago the bird I got was gobbling at 4:50am already and I took 15 minutes to walk 20 yards to my spot to make sure he didn't see/hear my coming. Eventually he gobbled his way down to me and had a lead breakfast. :D

White_Farm 04-19-2013 07:36 AM

That's what I was planning on doing in the morning, but when he gobbled from a completely different spot this morning it threw my thinking way off. I have not heard him gobble this afternoon either

swampbuster 04-20-2013 04:18 AM

Just shot a turkey at 7:00 this mourning. Will fill you guys in with pics and story!!!

RyanVT 04-20-2013 06:24 AM

Way to go man! your really putting them down!

swampbuster 04-20-2013 02:32 PM

First off I would like to give thanks and the glory to God for allowing me to harvest this turkey and spend time in his creation. I didn't know exactly were this turkey would roost since he changed roost on me the night before opening morning(complete opposite direction) so I sat and waited in the middle for him to gobble. He gobbled a little after six from his new roost site. I headed down the four wheeler trail and snuck in as close as I felt comfortable with. Once he flew down I called to him and he would answer my calls but I could tell he was moving away with each gobble. I was about to make a move and try to get around him when I used my haint gobble call. He gobbled back at me and I gobbled back at him. I could tell that he was coming back my way. I would yelp and then gobble at him sparingly. He hung up in thicket but eventually made his way through it. He gobbled one more time and that would be his last. He came in walking down the trail spitting and drumming, and I folded him up at fifteen Yards. He weighed 16.11 had a 10in beard and 5/8in spurs. As soon as I can figure how to load pics I will post them.

swampbuster 04-21-2013 06:17 AM

I went out to another spot that I have permission to hunt this morning. Did not hear any turkeys.

BB Outdoors 04-21-2013 08:37 AM

Congrats on the bird!! Another one on the board

Just got back from Texas with two more Rios. That makes 6 for the season and I am done. Actually one of them was a mistake. I hunted two longbeards Friday and Saturday but could not get them to work. I called in plenty of jakes, but the longbeards were few and far between. This morning about 9:30 I finally got the two longbeards to work. I had two tags left but decided to take only one of them. When they finally separated I took one of them. What I didn't know was there was a jake standing behind them in the brush. I never saw him. When the longbeard went down I saw another bird flopping behind him. I thought oh my God, I hope that's not a hen. I walked up to the flopping bird and fortunately it wasn't a hen. He was 20 yards in the brush behind where I shot the longbeard, which was 35 yards away himself. He was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's a good thing I had two tags left. The longbeard weighed 19.1 lbs., 10" beard, and 1 1/8" spurs. The jake, which was actually large for a jake, weighed 16 lbs. 14 oz., had a 6" beard, and 1/2" spurs. The longbeard scored 61.5625 and the jake scoed 38.875. Congrats Swamp on your bird.

Bucktail_Bob 04-21-2013 04:04 PM

Just got back from a 3 day hunt. 3 birds, 1 2 year old tom, and a couple jakes for the fryer. I'll post pics tomorrow.

RyanVT 04-22-2013 02:45 AM

Way to put the small down guys! I've got 5 days Til I can get out in the woods. Won't be the shooter but taking out a youth. We have had birds all over our youth day spot. Blind is all set up just have to hope they don't change there pattern witch they already have a little. They are starting to split up. Had 11 toms roosting in our spot down to 2

I got one this last weekend. I went with my dad, which is always fun. We got on them in the morning and dad's bird came in first and he laid it down. After he shot I cackled really loud and started purring and the other two toms ran over and started flogging the bird my dad just shot! So I did the only thing I could do and laid the biggest bird down. It was a hunt I'll never forget, I know I have only so many hunts left with my dad. Not to mention hunts where we double.

11 inch beard
1.25 spurs
24 lbs

Talondale 04-22-2013 07:12 AM

Wow! Things are getting hot. Congrats to all you guys scoring. I had a wedding for my niece this weekend so I was out of town and out of the woods. Hope to go back to family farm either this weekend or next, still not sure, but will be out somewhere Sat. morning.
