We are rolling now guys. Congrats to everyone. Jalex, that's an awesome bird you got. It officialy scores 71. I will submit the score. Bucktail, make sure you give me the info on your birds so I can submit scores. I need it on all three birds. We're looking great now. Let's win this thing.

swampbuster 04-22-2013 08:20 AM

Went back out this morning to some public land and did not hear a single bird gobble. Congrats to every one who is shooting birds. Sounds like some great hunts took place over the weekend

Bucktail_Bob 04-22-2013 10:42 AM

All eastern
24 lbs 8.5” beard both spurs 15/16
18 lbs 4.25” beard no spurs
16lbs 3.75 beard no spurs

swampbuster 04-22-2013 11:46 AM

24lbs wow!!! That's a heck of a bird bb

superstrutter 04-22-2013 12:17 PM

BB, your longbeard scores 59.75. The jakes score 26.5 and 23.5. I will submit the scores. The jakes should have had at least some bumps for spurs. There should be a little measurement on them. Of course it wouldn't increase the score that much. Congrats on your birds.

I had to carry it over a half a mile, a cold beer never tasted so good.

superstrutter 04-22-2013 07:17 PM

Here are our totals as of 4/22. Total birds killed 13. Total score 691.125. Six hunters have taken birds. The best bird score per hunter is 365.3125. Not too shabby so far. I'm finished hunting, so I have to leave it up to you guys to keep the birds coming . Good luck.

RyanVT 04-23-2013 02:43 AM

We are really putting birds down way To go guys is it may 1st yet I can't wait much longer!

jalex 04-23-2013 05:07 AM

I have one more tag to fill! I'll be out this coming weekend, and then I'm off several days next week and the last weekend left to get it done.

Talondale 04-23-2013 05:08 AM

Once May first hits I can start hunting afternoons, which means I can get in a little hunt on the way home after work.

BB Outdoors 04-23-2013 11:06 AM

I still have one tag left for May 8-14. Hopefully I can put the hammer down on another one!

swampbuster 04-24-2013 04:53 PM

I am going back to the spot i hunted a few mornings ago. Hopefully the birds will be talking, and the good Lord will bring one my way. Good luck to everyone still hunting

RyanVT 04-25-2013 02:42 PM

You'll be our sleeper RyanVT. The late score that puts us over the top!

Bucktail_Bob 04-26-2013 07:04 AM

Good luck to everyone hunting this weekend. I’m unfortunately done. I had 3 tags and one long weekend to get it done.
Also, we fried up one of those jakes while at camp. Cut one of the breasts into thin strips breaded and fried.
We mixed in some Hooters Wing sauce from a jar afterwards……and it does not get any better.

Talondale 04-29-2013 06:18 AM

Saturday I went out to were I figured the boys would be coming. I have been patterning them and they seem to come up a draw along a creek around mid-morning. I got in position before light and set up my three hen decoys. The National Forest boys had gone through this area last year dropping trees and letting them just lay, I guess in an effort to thin the forest but it makes walking difficult and, in my opinion, creates a lot of fuel for ground fires. I had my hens set in some laps and I was against a big oak where the bottom started to narrow. I heard nothing. Not a single gobble or yelp all morning. I called lightly thinking that the birds had a lot of pressure the last two weeks and wouldn't respond to aggressive calling. At 9 AM I heard a bird scratching it's way towards me from below. It was a decent tom with a bird about 8-9". I didn't know that though because I couldn't see him through the trees on the ground. He got to about 60 yards and didn't like my setup or something. He started heading up a side hill at a hurried walk putting all the way. I tried a purr and scratching leaves but he kept going. That ended Saturday.

Sunday evening my wife was cleaning out our van and heard gobbling behind our house. He was sounding off frequently and sounded like he was just over the fence on our neighbors property near a field with a spring house. He roosted up there and I thought I'd give it a try in the morning. I was in the woods edge at dark thirty, next to the fence where I could see into the neighbor's field but not be seen. The idea was to pull him across the fence. As I arrived a fox barked and the tom gobbled back a couple times. At first light I simulated a fly down slapping my pants leg. Gobbles, then hen clucks. Drats. I started trying to call the hen, mimicking her calls. Both were very vocal. In fact, I heard some calls I'd never heard before. One was like how you'd imagine a morning dove doing a yelp. Wierd. I heard them fly down and they just kept calling. He was pacing back and forth at about 150 yards away, possibly on my neighbor's driveway, but I couldn't get them to commit across the field. After an hour I had to leave to get ready for work. They were still calling when I left.

Talondale 05-01-2013 08:03 AM

Anyone else hunting during the week? Raining here.

swampbuster 05-01-2013 01:36 PM

Hey guys just got back home from my trip had a awesome time. Tagged out in Kansas and Nebraska. I forgot my tape measure, so I will have to measure beards and spurs. I did remember my scales so I have accurate weights. I will go over my notebook and get everything posted. I am wore out from all the driving

superstrutter 05-01-2013 04:55 PM

Nice job Swamp. Post pics and measurements when you can and I'll submit them. Anyone's season over other than mine?

Hey guys, got a nice NY longbeard today, one tag down. Really only appeared to be just this one longbeard in my hunting territory, been watching for days and out the past two mornings. The first morning I got close, he came in over my right shoulder but never gave a good clean shot. Lots of hens and jakes around, but only this one longbeard.

This morning he ended up in the field out in front of me strutting, he sent a hen over to check me out..she came in to about 35 yards. I could see the top of his tail fanning over the embankment at about 50 yards, but he never popped over the top. Finally just before the cutoff at 12 noon (11:51 to be exact) I was sitting in a hedge row and called like crazy and his three hen friends came looking for me. All three went past without spotting me and finally he gobbled his way up past me and I blasted him at 8 yards.

19.5 lbs
9" beard
1" spur
.5" spur(broken)

superstrutter 05-02-2013 06:35 PM

Congrats on a nice bird. He scores 52.3125. Keep the birds coming guys. We can win this thing. Swamp, don't forget to post your pics and stats on your birds so I can submit them.

Talondale 05-03-2013 12:05 PM

Grats Swamp and White! I'm planning on going in the morning. Either behind my house if I hear him roosting over there, or back on NFS land.

swampbuster 05-03-2013 04:46 PM

Congrats white farm nice job and nice turkey

swampbuster 05-03-2013 04:49 PM

Ss I can't find away to get my pics from my IPhone to this forum or to my computer and this forum. Does any one know how to or can u post pics of your iPhone?

superstrutter 05-03-2013 07:32 PM

Swamp, I sent you a pm. Sounds like you had a great time in the midwest. You still need to post the specs on each bird here. We may not win the best bird per hunter, but we stand a great chance of bagging the most birds. Heck, we may win both. Send the specs on all 6 birds. Once you send me the pics to my phone and the measurements here, I will submit them. I think that will give us 20 birds. Pretty dang good. Good luck Talondale.

superstrutter 05-03-2013 07:40 PM

Also make sure you give me the species of each. Where you hunted there could be Easterns, Rios, and hybrids. May even be some Merriams if you hunted the extreme western part of the states.

superstrutter 05-05-2013 05:16 PM

Swampbuster, send those measurements. Who all hunted this weekend.

jalex 05-05-2013 06:36 PM

Last day of the MO season was today. I tagged out with another double with a buddy. He was 23 lbs with 1 inch spurs and 10 inch beard. Not an upgrade but a decent bird. They hung up in a field for 2 hours while their hens fed around our decoys. Finally they couldn't take it anymore and came up to investigate. We 1,2,3ed em and dropped them both. The third bird started pecking the ones we just shot. We got up and walked to within 10 yards before he noticed us and ran off. Hope all your seasons are going well! Sounds like some of you are having some luck. It was a rough season around here but I got my two.

swampbuster 05-06-2013 05:34 AM

Congrats jalex on your bird sounds like you had a great hunt!!

Okay guys I am attempting to send pics of my Kansas birds lets see if this works

superstrutter 05-06-2013 07:42 AM

So far so good, but once again, I need the measurements.

Talondale 05-06-2013 08:00 AM

Didn't hear a bird at roost behind the house so my oldest son and I went back to NFS. With my son I use a popup blind because he cant sit still that long. We had a gobbler gobbling at us uphill 100 yards at first light, then it became two gobblers. They kept gobbling until 8:30 but wouldn't budge. At 9:00 we tried to climb around a steep mountain to get at their elevation and call them to us but got only silence. I'm out of town for the next week so won't be on until later. I'll have one last best chance on the 18th when I take all my kids with me to the family farm.

Congrats to all you guys getting it done. I seem to be getting the calls but not the commitments.

Talondale 05-06-2013 08:03 AM

Nevermind. My mistake.
