Good looking public land bird Blackheel, congrats. I hit some public land yesterday where a buddy of mine killed a double bearded bird last week. He had to take me in there because I had no idea where it was, and I tell you what I will probably never go back. The climb back outta that place was completely insane. We did get on two birds gobbling at about 7:30 about 200 yds down in a steep hollow. They were gobbling back and forth at each other and after we got set up we started calling to them. After just a few minutes of calling to them and getting good responses, we heard some idiot hit a crow call right down where the birds were gobbling. Why he felt the need to crow call to birds that were already gobbling is beyond me. He crow called several times right in close to the birds and must have spooked them off because we never heard them again or saw them. We sat there another hour waiting for any sign of them and the fool down in the hole threw every stupid call he had at them, including a dern owl call at 8:30 and several horrible gobbles with what was probably one of those dumb shaker deals. After he started doing that we left that spot and started walking some more. Never heard or saw anything after that.

I went back to my place today and sat in the rain for 6 hours and saw one hen walk by early in the morning. I might give it one more shot later toward the end of the season but right now I'm just ready to get moved into my new house and just relax with my little girl on the weekends. Two seasons in a row of this is tough but I guess it happens.

blackheel 04-14-2013 04:27 PM

Sorry to hear it SS. We were blessed to have that section of the land to ourselves for some reason yesterday. It was a youth & adult draw hunt. Had my nephew with me. We should have doubled but miscommunication lead to mistiming of the shot. It was my fault. I'm just glad I got him on a nice tom last Saturday on youth day (also a public land bird!) Last Saturday's hunt was bad with hunters on top of hunters in the morning despite it being a limited draw hunt.

EFH 04-15-2013 02:41 AM

That's a good lookin bird blackheel!!! Hope I can get on one.....well shoot one like that before season goes out! I've been on more than my fair share, just have the turkey gods frowning on me this year! Lol!

I've done it yet again. Two consecutive hunts with two consecutive misses. I will be shooting my gun this evening to see what's up. This one hurts. He gobbled at EVERYTHING I did. I even beat my hat on my leg as if a hen were flying across a little branch and he triple gobbled at it!

I got nestled in between a nice size tree and a rock bluff. The bird was on top of the bluff but it sounded as if he would swing around and come up the hollow. Nooooooo!!!!! He pitched off the thing about 15 yards away just over my head and hit the ground about 30 yards away! I guess I got turkey fever. HE HARDLY FLINCHED WHEN I SHOT!!!! He gobbled a few more times after I shot. For some reason my gun ejected my second shell after the shot. IT'S A STINKIN' BENELLI SBEII FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!! He gave me a great second shot but I DIDN'T HAVE A FREAKIN' SHELL IN MY CHAMBER!! I had to cycle my last shell in but by then he had gotten too far. I spent the next hour trying to convince him to come to see me again. We made our way down the hollow some more before I gave up on him.

I think I will wallow in self pity for awhile. :s14::sad::cry::s10::nonono2::(

Shake it off and get back in the ring,ya gottem on the ropes!:fighting0007:

Doetrain,
I got 21+8.75+10+21.25=61 from the NWTF calculator. Beard was 10 & 5/8 or 10.625. We'll need all our points with others gunning for us!

For the others - I have one NC tag left and a few out of state tags so I'll hopefully get some more opportunities.

Correction made Blackheel,I had a space in the last measurement which caused an error.

Nice bird blackheel

blackheel 04-15-2013 04:36 PM

Thanks doetrain! No problems!! :D

bald9eagle 04-16-2013 01:04 PM

Good job. I hate to say but I have let us down one more time. I should have 4 in the freezer but missed my third bird yesterday. I have since changed guns and bought a red dot scope. I checked my gun and it was all me.

My last miss was laying on my belly on a dirt bank after the bird snuck in behind me in the cutover. He marched in on a string. He gobbled 150 yards out and then 10 minutes later he was behind me in the clear cut about 25 yards. I had no idea he was coming. He didn't gobble like a hot bird.

Those Alabama Turkeys are harder to hit than a BAMA runing back! Stay after them bald9eagle their luck will run out on the next one. Just take a deep breath and gently sqeezzzzze that trigger.:fighting0007:

Did some scouting behind my land tonight, heard a bird hammering good about 6 pm. He gobbled 12 times over a 30 minute period slowly getting closer to where I was tucked into a brier bush. I wanted to get a look at him to see if he was a mature bird, finally came into view, not much to look at. His beard was 4" about 1/2 spurs, maybe 17 lbs. the only thing impressive about him was his gobble. He had 4 or 5 hens 70 to 80 yards away clucking, yelping and getting the young stud all wound up. I watched him for 15 minutes waiting to see if a Top Tom was going to come along and run him off, nothing. Finally eased out as he moved away toward the hens in the thick stuff. Got my blood up for the youth hunt this Saturday, got a good bird lined up for my youth hunters. Hoping another shows up before then so we can double up on them.

Arrowmaster 04-16-2013 05:38 PM

Ok I left Saturday for Missouri. Set my lind on Sunday. Headed out Monday morning for opening day. I head to my blind only to find it turned upside down from a storm the night before. Got it all fixed up back in place. Set decoys and got ready to have some fun. I heard 3 toms across the road from me and 2 on the neighbors property. Nothing within 300 yards. Well daybreak comes and I start off with some soft yelps, some clucks and purrs. About 15 mins later I repeated the series. The I heard it the old gobbler cluck. He was looking for me and apparently he wanted me to come to him. Well I couldnt convince him to come in and a closer look. He got as close as 100 yards. Bummer. He walked off. So I waited for about 30 mins and decided to get aggressive with the calls. Nothing. I then fired up a glass call and about 5 minutes later I see a gobbler headed my way. I gave hime aa few clucks and purrs. He locked on to my decoys and he was on his way. He closed the distance quick and came up a water way hopped up right behind my strutting tom decoy went to full strut at 15 yards. I put the bead on his head and knocked him right back in the water way. So we both got soaked. He weighed 20lbs, 1in spurs and 9in beard. It was an awesome hunt and I just love the rush I get from turkey hunting.

2 more for the Team effort, great job Arrowmaster & bald9eagle! I told you the next one was going down bald9eagle,was I right or what? I want to hear how the hunt went down,so get your story up OK. Glad you had success Captain this is the begining of a good run for you I'm sure. Guys I was off work yesterday to take care of some buisness in Owensboro KY. Before I left me and my hunting buddy did some scouting yesterday morning, If only it had been our opening day! We found 3 strutters dancing for the ladies in one of our best spots, and one of them was a beauty. At least 26lbs. 12" to 13" beard and spurs at least 1 1/2" a real Boss Tom! The other 2 kept their distance from him and when they even acted like they wanted his 2 hens he would shut them down. The youth season is Saturday morning and we both are taking a hunter to 2 different spots, this will be their first Turkey hunt. We will try to put them on the Big Boy and another nice one but much smaller bird across from were they live. If we don't get the big Boy Saturday we will get after him Wednesday,if he survives the weekend. Say a prayer for my youth hunters to get him,as bad as I would like to drop him I'm hoping one of the 2 nails him for their first bird. My blood got hot watching this guy strut for 15 minutes at 600 yards, he could be bigger but he is at least as discribed got a good look at him.

bald9eagle 04-18-2013 06:03 AM

It was a great hunt. I didn't hear anything on the roost. I had made up my mind to go to a completely different area several miles away. I made one last stop and hit the call. GOBBBBLLLBBBLLBBBBLLLEEE.

The rascal was down in a deep hole. There were 3-4 other birds just over the line that were doing their thing. I got really tight and could hear him drummingbut he wouldn't show. In the meanwhile one of the birds that had been over the line started responding. I slid down the hill a bit on the edge of a creek to get between the two. The first bird got henned up and shut his mouth.

The 2nd bird was still hitting good so I called a good bit louder even though I was under 100 from the 1st. I slipped out of the creek bottom and set up in the cutover. The cut stuff is more like skidder trails through small timber. I leaned against a small sapling that was leaned over facing the bird. Within minutes a hen walked up about 10 steps away. She started clucking hard and pulled him in the clear are 21 steps. BOOM! The old 870 with a new red dot scope and 3" Nitros did the trick.

Sweet time Team Mate,I like the challenge of having to work for them and thinking stradegy to take em out just as you did. It feels good getting the monkey off your back thats for sure. You going after anymore? You guys get to take like 3 or more birbs don't ya? We get one in Indiana.

5 is the limit... and I should be there. :( Thursday to Sunday night/Monday morn I'm in DC with the family. Get to hit it again Monday morn.

blackheel 04-21-2013 04:16 AM

Hunted a total of 25 hours last Thursday and Friday and never saw a tom. Only heard 3-4 gobbles on Thursday and none on Friday. Crazy part was on Friday I was in the hens from probably 8:30 am until I quit before the thunderstorms at around 7 pm. There probably was not a 30 min period where I could not spy a hen through binoculars and my guess would be that I had hens in easy shotgun range for well over 2 hours, maybe longer. We'll see how things go. I might get in a short hunt the end of the week, then it's out of state for a few days of turkey hunting. Good luck team!
