SouthernStrut56 04-27-2013 11:03 AM

Ok here's the story and pictures of bird #2 I got this morning back at my land. We've been planting 20 acres of corn the past 2 years so he was a fat one at 20.5 lbs. Beard was 11.5" and both spurs were just 1".

This morning I decided to go back to one of our small tracts and try to get on a bird that gobbled his butt off at me earlier in the season only to pitch down and go the other way. I tried that spot and heard nothing but wind, so I headed over to another spot and walked around a bit trying to make something gobble. The woods were silent there also, so I got in the truck and drove straight down to the fields. Since it was rather windy I just went ahead and headed towards a blind I have set up. Halfway down the road and ran into a group of hens in the road about 70 yards out. They looked like they were about to spook since I was wide out in the open, and even started putt'n like they were about to take off. I stuck that fan up in front of me and crouched down and they all stopped putt'n and went back to feeding. After a few minutes they all eased up into the woods and I walked on towards the blind. Before I got inside I went out in front of the blind about 20 yards and stuck the fan up in between some corn stalks and yelped a few times on my box call to cut through the wind. I had sat there for 20 minutes with no action and had just texted my buddy to tell him he wasn't missing anything. Not 5 minutes later I started hearing a strutter drumming to my right about 50 yards and out of view. I got on the slate and started giving him some cluck n purrs with some soft yelps mixed in. He drummed about every 8 seconds for nearly 15 minutes til I finally got a gobble out of him. After he gobbled, a hen showed up and walked right in front of me from right to left, followed by 5 big ol jakes. They checked out my fan a little bit and kept easing down the road until they stopped about 20 yds to the left. About that time I saw big boy's head bobbing through the corn at probably 60 yards out coming from the right. Right when the fan was between me and him, it finally caught his eye and he blew up and started drumming again. Once he saw it he was coming the whole way, and when he got to 30 yards I put him on the ground with the 870 and a 3.5" win supreme #5. Another great hunt where it just all came together. Two birds in two days.....I'll take it! That's it for me boys, now it's on to packing up and getting into my new house in a couple weeks. Glad I was able to get outta my slump and pitch in this year!

His final resting place

Once again great job SS! 2 Birds in two days thats gettin it done in a hurry. I had a tough hunt this morning, the hardest I have ever worked without a bird in the truck. Got set up at 5:45,hens roosting a bit close for comfort,70 to 80 yards. No Tom with them. 6:15 a Gobble 500 yards to my right,I waited to make sure one was not with the hens, notta. Took off toward the loud mouth, closed to 150 yards,he was loud and proud. Every time I called he got louder, but he would not come. Crossed the creek closed to within 80 yards,he was still hammering but would not move. Move 20 yards closer could not get any closer to thick. He was still hammering, I went silent,he gobbled a couple of more times. Then he was gone,I hoped he was finally coming to me,so I got ready looking for any movement through the heavy brush. Nothing sat there for 15 minutes total silence, game over. Thats the totallity of my day,no bird.

Oh yeah fellows! It's on now! I can't believe that I didn't get out of the bed this morning. I expected it to be raining this morning so I didn't bother.

Yeah the forecast said thunderstorms all day pretty much, but once again the weather folks were dead wrong. That's got to be the easiest job on earth. They guess what the weather is gonna be, and if they're wrong nobody holds them accountable. It kills me that you can turn on the weather channel these days and it's bound to be a show about "forecasting the end"...........you can't even forecast the weather 1 day in advance, how on earth are you going to predict the end of time? Buncha turkeys

Weather Underground is just about the best site for forecasting. It even gives an hourly forecast of the barometric pressure, that's what I like. Yesterday and today the pressure was over 30.34 in. Highest it's been all turkey season. They didn't gobble good at all this morning but I think that was due solely to the high winds where I was hunting. But when I got down in the bottoms it was pretty calm at times and the turkeys were all around cruising the fields. It wasn't a great day for gobbling but the turkeys were really active it seemed. I saw 4 or 5 along the roadside on the way out. I'm glad I got out of bed, but you know it could've gone either way. Just happened to be a good day for me.

SouthernStrut56 04-27-2013 06:17 PM

I just counted and I think we've dropped 7 more birds since the last time the contest results page was updated back on april 7th. I think we have 10 total birds for the team now.

Corey614 04-27-2013 06:18 PM

Whats up baldeagle its good to see you. EFH as a matter of fact I do have one Im hoping to put down this year.

blackheel 04-28-2013 02:26 AM

Way to go team!

doetrain 04-28-2013 04:19 PM

As I check how the team is doing each day the pressure is building up on me to get a bird. You guys are doing a bang up job,and I can't seem to get a bird closer than 60 to 70 yards. It happened again today but this time he came in silent, eyed my decoys and went back into the woods. Even a Jake came by and stuck his beak up at my decoys. Had 2 hens as well come by. I think I'm not going to put decoys out for my next few hunts, just maybe they will get closer than 60 or 70 yards. Pressing on none the less,Indiana birds in our area are giving everyone fits these past few days.

SouthernStrut56 04-28-2013 04:32 PM

You'll get him doetrain, just stay positive and hunt where you think you have the best shot at seeing birds. Sounds like you got the birds pinned down and it's only a matter of time. Your luck can change just like that bud, just keep at em. What kind of decoy setup are you using?

EFH 04-28-2013 06:47 PM

Got home from Ohio at 2:30 this morning.....always hate the end of season. Congrats to everyone who has downed a bird, and good luck to all of you still getting after em!

Doetrain, can't wait to see the pics when you turn that big boy a flip!! :)

SouthernStrut56 04-29-2013 01:39 AM

We still got 2 days left EFH, season ain't over yet! In fact, I am seriously considering taking off tomorrow to hunt the last day. I think it'll be the best day of the season.

EFH 04-29-2013 02:26 AM

I've taken 2 weeks off turkey hunting already, better stop while I still have a job to support next season! Lol!!

blackheel 04-29-2013 06:47 AM

Got a bird today. Story and pics will have to be later this week due to lack of signal. 22lbs 1.25" L 1" R 10 3/8" beard. 816 am

You're right about that. I'm done too. No reason to press my luck anymore than I already have! Back to the honey-do list to build up my credits for next season, lol!

bald9eagle 04-29-2013 05:54 PM

I'm leaving work at 7 in the morning to give 'em one last try. Maybe.....just maybe.

2 Fat Juicy Hens,no Tom or Jake. Went after him again this morning,no decoys just soft calls which of course he gobbled at. This morning he moved to the right onto some private property I can't hunt on. He went into a valley crossed a creek then headed up to the other ridge on the right which I can hunt. I went after him by making a right flanking move trying to get ahead of him. Thicker than shreaded wheat all the way with briars everywhere. My leaf suit is taking a beating trying to kill this bird. I got over near where he came out at but the Hens got to him first,I could here them clucking and purring in the valley below, game over! Had to get to work so that hunt is history. This bird will either be killed by me or he will kill me in the process. I'm 57,fat and out of shape and I can't keep this up much longer. But I'm determined to give him a couple more rounds at his roost tonight,or once again in the morning. How well can they see before daylight? Team mates help me out here I need wisdom to kill this smart mature bird!

doetrain 04-30-2013 09:28 AM

Good job Blackheal, dang nice bird for the Team and yourself!

I don't think they see too well before daylight in the thick of the woods. Imagine you're a turkey roosted up in a leafy oak tree and something comes walking under you. Heck it could be a deer, could be an armadillo, coon, coyote, or a number of other things. If you were look down and picture yourself walking, you aren't the size of a ball cap once you get where the bird can see you under the tree. And in the dark, especially down on the forest floor where it's darkest, you might not be seen at all. On the other hand, if you're walking out in the open towards the roosted birds, you might want to rethink your entry. I think you've got all the wisdom you need, it's just a matter of being there on the right day to make it happen. A lot of times it takes aggressive pursuit and some run and gun tactics....or "crawl" and gun.....to drive him crazy enough to come in. Sitting still doesn't always kill them, no matter how good you sound to him.............sounds like you got that part figured out too, judging by your story of the leafy suit in the briar patch. That's not fun by the way. Stick with it as long as you can doetrain, I know it gets tough in the late season when the frustration sets in. Good luck!

doetrain 04-30-2013 05:11 PM

Now that some have assured me they can't see like a cat in the dark I entend to get about 70 yards under him before light in a creek bottom he crossed today. The woods are real thick up high and on the ground, the creek is a smooth bottom not rocky. I plan on getting as agressive as I can next to carpet bombing the area! The story continues tomarrow. Thanks for the encouragement SS our season is 7 days old as of tomarrow. They are gobbling and strtutin good in the mornings only at this time. Heard 3 this morning within 1/2 mile,2 were across the road but none of them has a set of pipes like the one I'm after.

doetrain 05-01-2013 06:34 AM

Well I wish I could say my 4th. hunt trying to kill one particular bird met with success this morning, but I can't. He did his stand your ground and gobble for 30 minutes routine, but refused to come to me across the valley where I can legally hunt. He stayed on private property the whole time,I bet the home owner wishes he would find a new place to call for the ladies. He was within 100 yards of his back yard! The guys dogs bark every morning then he puts them up to shut them up. I think it's going to take a better hunter than me to get this bird to come and dine on some shot,I'm moving on to another spot tomarrow. Sorry I could not seal the deal on this Tom,he's a dandy of a bird.

blackheel 05-01-2013 01:37 PM

got another tag filled! Details and pics to follow tonight when I get home

Arrowmaster 05-01-2013 01:57 PM

Awesome blackheel

blackheel 05-01-2013 04:42 PM

Story and pics will have to wait until tomorrow! I'm pooped. Stats for today's tom-23 lbs 10 5/16 beard 1" right, 15/16 left. He had what I guess was the start of a second beard about 1" below the normal beard. No filaments in it though. Someday....

turkman1 05-01-2013 06:09 PM

Finally after hunting 3 days, I was seeing jakes. I seen a big tom Sunday in the wheat field 90 yards away, gobbling for a long time. I was getting tired and walked towards him and he walked in the woods. Today I set up around the field from him and I heard him gobbled at 5:22 a.m, and at 5:30 I yelped and gobbled back and around 6:00 he flew down and walk across the field to the valley and gobbled and I yelped and purred couple times and then 3 jakes coming my way and the big tom was walking around the corner by my decoys. 15 yards away, I got my bow and shot it and it dropped 10 yards away. The jakes running to the big tom so I got out of my blind and picked it up. I took it home and the weight was 22.8lbs. beard size 10 3/4, right spur 1 3/8, left spur 1 1/8. I will send pictures to Mr. Arrow Master.

SouthernStrut56 05-01-2013 06:13 PM

Heck yeah fellas! Way to bust em blackheel and turkman!

blackheel 05-02-2013 12:29 PM

That's a great one turkman! Congrats!

blackheel 05-02-2013 01:32 PM

Ok I am going to try this from the phone for the first time.
I arrived Sunday for my annual out of state hunt. We did some scouting and found a nice group of turkeys working at the back of a field. We did some more scouting and had to go back by the field where we saw the nice group and now there were at least 5 toms in the group. Was able to spot one hen on the roost already and was making plans on where to set up. Well the spot that looked best was squashed when I watched the last bird in the field fly up into to the tree I wanted to set up by! Another plan had to be made. Monday morning I was greeted by cold rain so I grabbed my blind so between it and my rain gear I could stay dry. Eased in from the opposite direction and decided to setup along a lane in the field probably 150 yds from the roosted bird I saw fly up. As it got lighter I could see a longbeard roosted on the field edge that would have busted me if I had pushed closer. At flydown toms, jakes, and hens pitched down right where I wished I was sitting. Two jakes started chasing each other in circles that I would have made many people dizzy. It carried on for almost 2 hrs! There were at least 5 toms, 5 jakes, and a bunch of hens. Most of them went out of sight for a while except for 4 Jakes but eventually a tom and 3 hens joined them 150 yds down from me. Short of the remainder of the story is over the next hour I coaxed them into range and had to wait for the tom and a jake to separate. At 39 yds he took his last step. At this point I was ready to get up and move since the cold rain had taken is toll on me.

blackheel 05-02-2013 01:44 PM

Bird 2
Tuesday was a bust. Wednesday dawned with hope and beautiful weather. We had watched a large group of turkeys go to roost and I was able to set up really close where they supposedly always flew out. Well I was greeted with thundering gobbles but today they flew to the east and got no closer than 80 yds. One satellite tom got in range joining the group but I passed on him (stupidly). They all worked away.

I regrouped and was met by my friend who suggested we check the farm where I have killed a bird each of the last 3 yrs (we hadn't seen much there this year). Long story short, we spied a group of birds near where I've had success before. He dropped me off to work them and he had something to do. As I was making my first move to get into position, his truck spooked them and changed my plans. They moved! I had to make a very quick hook move to get in front of the group. Made a quick call and a tom appeared. He saw me as I saw him and I had to make a quick move. I knew the gun could do it so at 52 yds he went down. Done and tagged out at 740!

blackheel 05-02-2013 01:47 PM

Sorry the pics are blurry. Phone photobucket isn't as good as on the computer!

EFH 05-02-2013 03:30 PM

Way to go guys! Y'all shooting some studs too!!

doetrain 05-02-2013 05:32 PM

Way to go Blackheel and Turkman1 ! You guys are doing a great job because me and Arrowmaster are having a tough time in the Hoosier State. Two more hunts in prime areas and not a Turkey in sight all day. Back at it tomarrow took 2 more vacation days to try and get the job done before rain comes in for the next 3 days. Guess I'll get the blind out even though I hate hunting in a blind, but I don't like sitting in the rain either.

Arrowmaster 05-02-2013 06:59 PM
