Very very nice bird. Congrats. Now give us a story with it. :)

DTC Jr 04-06-2013 05:59 PM

First we had one hen come in then a big boss hen came from the bottom then there was 8 hens 3 witch were bearded, we had jake mobile set up then the big gobbler came running out and I shot him at 10 yrds.

hunting junkie 04-06-2013 06:33 PM

Great big ol'e bird DTC JR ....way to go...congrats to you and your dad

DTC Jr 04-06-2013 07:09 PM

Thanks hunting junkie

bald9eagle 04-06-2013 11:36 PM

Congrats JR! Impressive bird. That should move us way up the rankings!

DTC Jr 04-07-2013 04:55 AM

Nice bird EFA that will help in the rankings!!!

Arrowmaster 04-07-2013 05:14 AM

Went to listen at a couple new places today. This is the first Ive been out all year listening. Hit the owl hooter and then there was music to my ears. That got the adrenline pumping. Loaded back up and drove to the second spot. Got out of the truck. Heard a crow and instantly more music to my ears. Im ready for the rush and its coming. Season is still a couple weeks away here in Indiana, but Im headed to Missouri next saturday and will be hunting the opener in Missouri on the following Monday. Im ready :)

hunting junkie 04-07-2013 08:25 AM

Hey arrow are they having a scoreboard this year??????

Arrowmaster 04-07-2013 01:41 PM

Yes JW put it up today

EFH 04-07-2013 02:16 PM

Congrats DTC Jr, that's a hoss for sure!

Went back to my place today. The water is going back down, but may be too late into the season to matter. Hens have to get to a nesting area, and if my place floods at the right time the birds set up for the spring in another area. I found one lone set of gobbler tracks a day or two old in the muddy glazed floor the floods have left, but only red birds and owls sang to welcome the day. Hunted until lunch with no signs of any birds.
I'm starting to think about not going to Ohio the last week of April and going back to north BAMA again....those birds should be ripe for the picking by then.

DTC Jr 04-07-2013 02:23 PM

Boys I just looked at the rankings we are in 1st!!!

I always think if I just can get that one bird, I'll be ok.......WRONG! Lol!!!

turkman1 04-08-2013 04:21 PM

Great Job to EFH and DTC Jr. way to go

My turkey hunting was not so good in Nebraska. I was there Thrsday at 5:00 p.m. I had two jakes come right in at 5:45 at 15 yrds away. I let them walk away, at 5:50 a big Tom about 70 yrds away he looked at me and Limped away. He looked like he was shot before. The next morning alot of hens and toms was rigth behind me, and yelp and hens yelp and the toms gobbling back at me but they gone the others away from me. I stayed all morning by the afternoon the wind was picking up 20 to 30 mph winds. I got in the bottoms hope to hear some toms, but no luck. The next morning the wind was still blowing the same. Well that was my hunt. I hope I will get one in Illinois.

DTC Jr 04-08-2013 06:06 PM

That's a big bird if you could get him down doetrain, that would be really good for us!!!

EFH 04-08-2013 06:21 PM

Turkman, you'll get em bro! Cant wait to see that fat Illinois strutter your gonna fold up! :)

SouthernStrut56 04-08-2013 06:33 PM

That's the way to smack em dtc jr, excellent bird buddy!

Well I took my day off today instead of Friday and had a fairly good morning, but got the slip put on me by a stubborn old gobbler. I got to the property about 5:30 and listened to about 10 minutes of dead silence before giving an owl hoot to try and wake em up. As soon as I did a bird cut me off with a strong gobble at about 150 yds down off a steep ridge. He gobbled his butt off at the crows but never answered my calls once I was set up. There were only two ways he could've pitched down off the roost and he decided to go the other way to the neighbors property. This was the first day I've had a good bit of gobbling but it was all shock gobbling and he just wasn't interested in me. Once he hit the ground he shut up and was gone. I was able to slip up to the edge of the hill overlooking the hollow and opposite ridge and actually saw him going up the other side with some other birds. I tried to get over to the other side at about 10:00 and see if I could get another shock gobble from him but I got nothing. Another frustrating day after an hour drive but hopefully the action is picking up. I'll be back after that bird soon.

Traveling Fur Hunter 04-09-2013 10:48 AM

Looking good guys! Hope I'll be on there next year.

BUCKMARK 04-09-2013 02:21 PM

You guys are putting down down good birds, I can't wait to get out on the 20th and see if I can add to the teram score. the weather report looks to be good and the birds should be willing and able...

doetrain 04-09-2013 03:51 PM

Got 2 new youth hunters to take out the 20th. Got 3 strutters near their house. Hoping to double up with these 2 who have never hunted before, but they are crack shots. Their sister is Turkey Girl who I've taken out 3 years in a row,she has 2 in the bag so far,but she is 18 now. Hope to better my 23 pounder from last year,or at least get one with 1" or better spurs and 11" beard. The one in the picture fits the bill except in the beard,it may be 9 or 10". I'll not pass on him if I get the chance. DTC JR. that is an awesome Top Tom,once again great job!

EFH 04-10-2013 02:48 AM

Lol! I hear that doetrain, I wouldn't even think on passing a bird like that! Would love to hang him upside down on a limb myself! That's great you take youth hunters out. Do you have a youth weekend? Ours is always the weekend before opening day. I've taken my daughter the last two years, and I hope next year maybe she'll be big enough to actually hunt. I just take her now and let her hear the woods in the morning and really scout for the opener, but she's 7 and that's hunting to her and she loves it!

MDManiac 04-10-2013 01:31 PM

I'm here hunting NY Month of May...will be back hopefully with a bird to post!

bald9eagle 04-10-2013 02:29 PM

Sorry guys.....I let us down. I took two very nice saplings though. Pics to follow.

EFH 04-10-2013 03:21 PM

Sounds good Baldeagle, can't wait until pics are up!! I was luck enough to take the ever elusive open field last Wednesday.....been wanting to take a sapling for a few seasons now. Maybe we can get together and swap a hunt out one day.

LOL. I hate when those little guys jump in front of your shot...

BUCKMARK 04-11-2013 12:54 PM

But on a more serious note...7 days and a wake up, and I will be out looking to whack a poor little sapling, I mean big Tom...

EFH 04-11-2013 02:51 PM

Put em on the ground BUCKMARK!!

Baldeagle, that was a dandy! I've seen a few like that but was never lucky enough to get them to pay attention to my calls. Looks like his bark was dragging the ground!

bald9eagle 04-12-2013 11:56 AM

Well *&%(^*#.................:bash::bash::bash::bash::b ash::bash:

I've done it yet again. Two consecutive hunts with two consecutive misses. I will be shooting my gun this evening to see what's up. This one hurts. He gobbled at EVERYTHING I did. I even beat my hat on my leg as if a hen were flying across a little branch and he triple gobbled at it!

I got nestled in between a nice size tree and a rock bluff. The bird was on top of the bluff but it sounded as if he would swing around and come up the hollow. Nooooooo!!!!! He pitched off the thing about 15 yards away just over my head and hit the ground about 30 yards away! I guess I got turkey fever. HE HARDLY FLINCHED WHEN I SHOT!!!! He gobbled a few more times after I shot. For some reason my gun ejected my second shell after the shot. IT'S A STINKIN' BENELLI SBEII FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!! He gave me a great second shot but I DIDN'T HAVE A FREAKIN' SHELL IN MY CHAMBER!! I had to cycle my last shell in but by then he had gotten too far. I spent the next hour trying to convince him to come to see me again. We made our way down the hollow some more before I gave up on him.

I think I will wallow in self pity for awhile. :s14::sad::cry::s10::nonono2::(

bald9eagle 04-12-2013 02:08 PM

To top it off I lost one of my calls that I made. It was my favorite. I think my head might explode.

bald9eagle 04-12-2013 02:16 PM

Okay. Shot my gun. It appears to be shooting low. I think it is time I spend some money on some really good sights.

EDIT: After reading some things I found out something I didn't know about the SBEII. The front bead is supposed to be stacked on top of the mid bead to form a "8". How I was able to get the patterns I did the first time around is beyond me.

EFH 04-12-2013 07:25 PM

Well.....at least you know now, and the birds are still gobbling good! You'll get out ther and bust another.

We are having a bad luck contest! My wife drove my truck today and was lucky enough to have the cooling system fail! Loosing my coolant (sprayed under hood) but its going to be Monday before my buddy can pressurize it to find my leak! Looks like I'm out for a while!

Arrowmaster 04-12-2013 08:07 PM

Ok Im leaving today for Missouri. Im ready to feel the rush. Im gonna bust my butt and try and put one on the ground Monday. Im setting blinds Sunday and will be ready to go Monday. I wont be back until late wednesday night so someone has to step up and score birds if we get some. I put the names in a hat and drew and doetrain your name was drawn to score the birds and post them. Hopefully we can lay the smack down. Good luck to all and be safe. Missouri here I come :)

EFH 04-13-2013 07:07 PM

Go get em Arrow!!!! I'll be waiting on pics :)
