Where you heading to Ethan?

I went out this morning to Bankhead and heard 4-5 birds. One was really lighting it up so he should be ready for Monday morning. Had one other bird blow my cap off when he gobbled at a woodpecker. Gobbling is still weak but is picking up. Supposed to be a cold snap mid-week but my guess is that is winter's last hurrah.

Arrowmaster 03-30-2013 07:13 AM

Put one on the ground Baldeagle. Im glad they are starting to fire up.

DTC Jr 03-31-2013 05:41 AM

Finally got logged in. My dad and I heard 5 this morning and my papa just called and said there was a strutter and 5 hens in our alfalfa field. Youth season opens Saturday and I can't wait.

Arrowmaster 03-31-2013 06:41 AM

Hey guys. I'm the guy that dropped out. I have a funny story to tell. I live in DeBeque, CO, and it's good turkey habitat to the North-West, up along a creek. Everywhere else is kind of a desert, but turkeys may live there too. I do a lot of hiking and hunting in the desert area, and have never seen turkeys there before. Once, a long time ago, we saw a big flock roosting in a tree near us. No idea where they come from. If they came from the West, they'd have to cross the freeway. Well, today I was checking a muskrat trap, and I heard a gobble behind me. I turned to look, and saw a bid Tom Turkey try to get through a fence. I thought it was someone's turkey that had gotten away, so I drove over to pick it up and find the owner, since we live in the farming area. I got over there and played tag with that turkey for five minutes, before I realized that if I got hold of him, he would have killed me if I got him. He ran off and started walking down the road, so I asked around and everyone said he was roosting in a tree near there that night. I went home and we talked about it, and realized that it was a wild turkey. I don't have a tag, but I could get one, but I'd probably never find him, unless he was on private land. I should have caught him, locked him up, and on April 2nd, shoot him LOL! So the turkeys are gobbling in Colorado, and are out and about. Hope to be with ya'll next year.
Boone.

That gobbler was back in the alfalfa tonight with 9 hens. My papa is gonna watch for him and let me know how often he is coming in. Here is a picture of him.

Good luck Baldeagle, my birds are still pretty quiet. I had one come in to my calls around 11:30AM Friday but walked right behind my ground blind and didn't come into the field. I caught a glimpse of him out the side window before he went behind us. I should have been on a tree with some decoys out and I could have either spun and shot or had more of chance of luring him into the field. He didn't see anything out there so he went straight back where he came from. Never gobbled all morning.

Saturday was a little better but it ended up working out better for my buddy than it did me. Heard zero gobbles all morning and decided to just walk a road and listen for any signs of birds. We followed yelps around all morning and moved around to a few different setups until our final spot. We had walked the road and gotten close to an opening when we heard some good hen yelps and footsteps heading in close. We eased down to the opening that was on the end of a ridge then split up on either side of the hill to make sure we had it covered. All we did was scratch around and I purred on the mouth call a little and the hens came right in with a longbeard strutting behind em. Only problem was they came to my buddy's side of the hill. They came straight to him and he laid a pretty good 2 year old bird out....8" beard and 3/4" spurs, we didn't weigh him but he was probably about 16 or 17 lbs if I had to guess. That was just the 2nd bird he's ever killed so I was real happy he got one. If I don't hear any gobbles next weekend I'm going to south alabama the weekend after. Good luck to everybody else starting off!

Spankem Team Mate, just Spankem!:woot: Got another Tom on the trail cam this weekend 1 1/4 inch spurs. He is an old looking bird with a sorry looking beard and not more than 18 lbs. I bet,but nice hooks. If he keeps eating my corn he will fatten up.

SouthernStrut56 04-02-2013 05:16 PM

Good deal baldeagle, way to get us on the board bud. That's a nice 2 year old bird. I sure do hope this warm weather helps me out down here.

Youth season in MO tomorrow and I can't wait. My papa has been seeing gobblers everyday in our alfalfa field. He says they are really starting to gobble.

EFH 04-05-2013 12:39 PM

GREAT BIRD Baldeagle!!!!!

DTC Jr, go get em bro!

EFH 04-05-2013 12:48 PM

Been hunting hard all week! The birds are not right yet where I was, lots of big flocks and not much gobbling. Despite that, I got 5 different gobblers in the 60+ yard range but the woods are open and they hung up. Wed. I finally said what the heck and squeezed off on one and......yep you guessed it...missed! Lol!!
There is a good ending to my trip though! Land owner took me to another of his farms this morning and I got on a hot bird! I didn't get to take him...but I did bust his buddy that was sneaking in the back door! BOOM!!!! Arrow has the pics...21.5lbs, 1"spurs, 9.25" beard!

Arrowmaster 04-05-2013 01:30 PM

SouthernStrut56 04-05-2013 08:19 PM

There ya go Ethan, nice fat longbeard! Congrats buddy! I'm gonna keep this hot streak going for us tomorrow.

bald9eagle 04-06-2013 06:30 AM

Dude! Took you long enough!

Monday was an above average gobbling day. Tuesday and Wednesday were tough. My brother took one Thursday despite the nasty weather. Friday was kinda blah. I'm stuck at work today but I've been told that they are singing good. My brother and one of my buddies have both taken 3 apiece despite the poor gobbling.

Congrats Ethan.

SouthernStrut56 04-06-2013 04:43 PM

I lied....couldn't get it done today. Heard a few birds let out one or two quick shock gobbles after we got some owls fired up early, but after a second or two of gobbles they shut up and we never heard em again. Called up a jake off the roost and when he saw my hen and funky chicken jake with bright red head at the edge of the logging road he started putt'n and wouldn't leave. I think this is why the other birds never came around. We sat there til 9 then started walking the roads but never heard or saw anything else. Those gobblers that shock gobbled at the owls sounded like they were all bunched up in one tree, so I still don't think they're ready to split up and start gettin after it. This has been the second slowest season next to last year at my place. It's just plain boring to be honest. If my fields were cut and planted id have a solid plan B on days like today....which have been everyday, but my tractor is out of commission and I ain't had time to fix it to get all that done. I'm gonna hit some other places the next couple of times and see what I end up with. Today was a really nice day to be in the woods though.....great weather.

DTC Jr 04-06-2013 05:03 PM

My Dad and I got it done this after noon. The bird was 26 lbs the beard was 10 in and the spurs were 1 1/8.

Arrowmaster 04-06-2013 05:21 PM

Awesome DTC Jr. Congrats Thats a big bird. Make sure ya get a pic up. :)
