What part of Tennessee you gonna try and hunt baldeagle?

I think the weather here in Alabama is looking pretty good for the next couple of weeks to keep the birds layin low. I think they'll be kickin in high gear the first week or two of the season. I haven't been able to get out to the land and listen or scout lately. You guys in bama got any scouting reports from the past week or two?

I've got a buddy that hunts Tie Camp. I'm thinking about going to Eagle Creek. My father-in-law has a lease just across the state line that has tons of birds.

Haven't done any scouting yet. I want to get out to Black Warrior and check out a few spots. Any of you guys ever hunted Choccolocco WMA? One of my buddies wants to check it out but I hate to leave birds to find birds.

bald9eagle 02-25-2013 12:04 PM

Just checked out your FB page SS. Nice looking calls. I especially like the AU one. I will be using my own brand :) this year.

Thanks man I appreciate it! I've had a lot of good success with my calls, especially the diaphragms and double sided calls. What kind of calls do you make and how long you been doing it?

I've hunted Choccolocco a couple of times but never hit it just right because I was hunting my own property during those peak times. That WMA has the highest harvest numbers year after year in the state. There are supposedly birds all over the place and there are people who have great success up there. I wouldn't mind planning a weekend to meet up with you and hunt it a time or two if you think you'll be heading that way. I've got a buddy who deer hunts up there a lot and knows some places where we could probably get away from the crowd. Let me know and we'll try to plan something in April.

I just started making calls about September or so. Had a heart attack in July so I needed to find an outlet to get me off the couch. Bought a small lathe and studied up on it. I think I make a pretty good sounding call, at least to my ears. Maybe I can take a good enough picture to share.

As for Choccolocco, my buddy wants to try it on opening day. We have hunted Oakmulgee the last 5 seasons. He saw the numbers on Choccolocco and wants to try it. I'm concerned about pressure being that close to Anniston/Oxford. If it looks like I will be able to get back down there in April I'll let you know.

SouthernStrut56 02-26-2013 06:03 PM

I've been building them for a few years but just bought my grizzly lathe last year. There's something about turning your own call and striker that really enhances the experience of a hunt. I'm turning a Ziricote striker right now for a pretty unique crystal call I'm going to try out.

You probably will run into a pretty good crowd at choccolocco on opening weekend. But if you get in there early and play your cards right you might have some luck. You don't have people from just oxford and anniston coming in either. Piedmont and Jacksonville bring a lot of people down highway 9 and part of the wma is in Heflin so they bring in some regulars too. You'll run into a lot of Jacksonville college kids who come down to hunt because it's the cool thing to do and they heard their frat buddies talking about it.

It looks like Choccolocco is off the table for now....which is good. I hated the thought of wasting the first two days of season just trying to learn a new place. My buddy is going to Oakmulgee for the youth hunt Saturday to do some scouting.

8 more days. March 15th. I'll be heading south to Oakmulgee WMA on the 14th. Except for Sunday I'll hunt the first 6 days of the southern season. In north Alabama it starts April 1.

SouthernStrut56 03-07-2013 07:18 PM

I'll be out and about this weekend for a youth hunt and some scouting. Last year I took my wife's 13 yr old cousin and his dad on their first ever turkey hunt. We got on two good longbeards gobbling on the roost and was able to get one to come right in front of the first timer's 20 gauge Browning. Hopefully we can do it again this year. March 15th is the first day of regular season. I oughta be in the woods a good bit early on. Maybe they'll talk to me this year. They didn't make a sound all season after that youth hunt, and I hunted 3 or 4 different tracts. Sure do wish I could go back to my college days where I could skip class and go hunt 3 days a week. Those were the days.

bald9eagle 03-08-2013 04:13 AM

Good luck.

bald9eagle 03-11-2013 05:45 AM

Looks like Choccolocco is back on for Friday and Saturday. My buddy is kinda funny about this sort of thing so I'm gonna go along. He saw the man days/per bird killed number and thought that he should be hunting there. Couple that with him not hearing any birds at Oakmulgee Saturday and there is no changing his mind.

Personally I hate to leave birds to go find birds but what the hey, I like checking out new places.

SouthernStrut56 03-11-2013 06:55 AM

They aren't gobbling up here yet either. Heard zero on 3 tracts of land yesterday.

turkman1 03-12-2013 05:04 PM

I am going to start out in Nebraska April 11

EFH 03-14-2013 03:31 PM

What's up brothers!!! Been busy and haven't been on in a while, but you know me.... I'm hunting in the morning! I'll be in the woods all weekend and Monday too! Lets fold some strutters up!

Arrowmaster 03-14-2013 04:18 PM

Awesome EFH. Get the party started :)

SouthernStrut56 03-14-2013 05:00 PM

It's on tomorrow. Good luck EFH, let's get it started bud. I'll be out all weekend too, and may try to take Monday off if the weather looks good.

Traveling Fur Hunter 03-14-2013 06:29 PM

Checking in. We'll murder 'em right? First time turkey hunting. Wish me luck.

Arrowmaster 03-15-2013 02:35 PM

Welcome TFH. If ya have any questions please feel free to ask.

EFH 03-15-2013 05:24 PM

Ok, first day not too bad. Didn't hear a single bird, but did walk up to a ag field edge and had about 20 turkeys in it. I circled field and they took their sweet time working to me (no calling). It was 1pm when they finally hit that 80yd mark and to my surprise there was only about 5 hens.... The rest were jakes! Lmao!!!! Oh well, good sign for next year. Also looked like a winter flock, still got some time for them to get right! Going to hit 3 different counties the next 3 days, maybe we'll find a swinging beard!

EFH 03-15-2013 05:25 PM

And welcome TFH!!!

Arrowmaster 03-15-2013 07:28 PM

Lay the smack down SS and EFH. I almost talked my buddy into coming and hunting Alabama this weekend. I was ready to go...

bald9eagle 03-16-2013 02:22 AM

First day not so well for me either. Roosted a bird Thursday. Rascal picked out a tree 60 yards from us so it was pretty dark getting out of the woods. He dropped down away from us and straight to all his hens in morning. We thought he was going right so we dropped off in steep hollow to cut him off......he went left. Anyway when we figured him out he and his posse were heading to top of next ridge. We tried to cut them off but they beat us. My buddy missed after we walked up on the flock.

bald9eagle 03-16-2013 02:26 AM

Agree with two things SS. Saw LOTS of Jake's (probably 7-8) and that was exactly what I expected after the warm, dry spring we had last year. Secondly, you're right. They are still in winter flocks and haven't cranked it up yet.

Arrowmaster 03-16-2013 06:01 AM

Put the smack down baldeagle.

JW 03-16-2013 03:17 PM

signing in on behalf of deer tracks - have been told he will be here.....

So you have a full team

Good luck folks!

Dave......JW
