RE: team 19 check in
Nice birds Mferman! Way to get on the board, good luck in SD. I won't get there until May 6th or so. Where are you hunting out there?
Got back from west TX on Monday. Literally shot a last minute gobbler. Hunted hard for 3 solid days. Tons of jakes and hens but the big boys were staying qiet and hidden. This was happening so much that there was a large newspaper article about it in the Amarillo Sunday sports section. I had plenty of turkey action, got to hear tons of great hen talk real close up (sometimes as close as 5-10 feet) and got 'attacked' 2 times by what I referred to as a 'ravenous band of veloci-jakes'.............they would come in a running and just swarm into the hens aroundme and then run away again. I am also very sorry to report that I missed one of theseveloci-jakes on two different ocassions................lesson learned - don't try to shoot a a moving jake if he is really moving, and, if you do shoot at one make sure thatthe wood is on the wood...............I plumb picked my head WAY up both times to try to 'see' better. Bad plan. Anyways it all came togetherthe last 30 minutes of the 4th day, a mere 15 minutes before I had it figured that I had to skin out of there and head for the airport! I'll post the pics I have soon. Work is swamping my but now cause I've been out turkey hunting two times in the past 4 weeks. Anybody else having any luck? Stay patient forall of you that are still waiting - andthevery best to you for an excellent experience, and a SAFE ONE!! My bird was a Rio, I'll post the score here for fun but it won't come close to the GA bird I got. Hope to talk more here now that I am around for a few weeks! |
RE: team 19 check in
Outside of Rapid City. I will be there for opening day (this Saturday), hope weather improves as they've had snow all week.
|
RE: team 19 check in
You might be hunting in the snow. Stutters in the snow just doesn't seem right to me. Our youth season opens Saturday and it is going to be cold and nasty here. It's going to feel more like deer season than turkey season.

RE: team 19 check in
I am sure getting anxious for the following days. I am getting my black bear back from the taxidermist on Saturday and dropping my osceola and rio fans off. Then one Monday it is the opener for MO. I got up and listend this morning and the birds are still grouped up. It might be some rough hunting for the first week or so but I think I am up to the challenge. Good luck team members.

RE: team 19 check in
well, after this wekend im back in the feild tell my season is over. i havent had a bird in range that wasnt a hen or jake, barring the tom i had my brother-in-law shoot

RE: team 19 check in
Well MO season finally opens in the morning. I spent the evening reading bedtime stories to 4 big toms on a place that I have leased. Going to get up early and slip in to get set up well before daylight.

RE: team 19 check in
Hey fellas, season started on Mon. here in Michigan, my tag is not good untill May 6th. that will be my opener. I hope there will still be some dumb toms out there for me!!
Congrats on the young man on His youth hunt. |
RE: team 19 check in
Well i was out with my bro last weekend and we did not score.
We had a tom roosted about 75 yards away and he just flew down the wrong way and the hens did not like our decoys much! There was not to much response to the calls yet so my weeked of May 7th or so is looking good!!! Lots of big birds on the properties! Pines |
RE: team 19 check in

RE: team 19 check in
Hey guys I scored this morning in MO. I had to crop the picture so it would fit but I will post a different one later. The bird I killed this morning will beat my osceola and rio that I registered last month. The bird I killed this morning was 21 lbs, 10 1/4" beard, and had 1 1/8" spurs. I still have 1 tag left for MO and can't use it until Monday. Good luck everyone.

RE: team 19 check in
Week 2 in MO starts tomorrow. I listened this morning and probably heard 15-20 gobble this morning. I am finally starting to see single hens and toms by themselves. I think by mid week the birds should be working really well here. Good luck all.

RE: team 19 check in
Killed my final bird for the MO season this morning. He weighed 21 1/4 lbs, 1" spurs, but he sported a double beard. There measurements were 9 1/4" and 10 3/4". He had a twin brother at his side and I hada tough decision on which one to shoot but something told me to shoot HIM. They other one probably has biggers spurs and is triple bearded.hahaha

Bird Down:
I went out Saturday morning and made my way through the rain, muck and mud to my blind behind our farm. Climbed in my blind and waited untill it was time for the birds to fly out of the roost. I started calling with a few puts and soft purs and immediately got a response. I figured he was probably 100-150 yards to the north west of me in the woods. My blind sets up in the back corner of 40 acres along a fence line and woodline. I waited 5 minutes and called again, heanswered right back. Waited a few more minutes and he gobbled one more time, hes coming in. I waited 8 minutes or so before calling again and he never answered. I figured he hened up on me.10 minutes later I have a big hen come out of the woods and into the field. She had no care in world, she even walked right up to the blind and took a peek inside. She milled around the corner where my blind was setup for 20 minutes, once in a while looking into the woods, when she looked, I looked. Nothing. As i was watching her again she looked back again, I gave a few puts as I was watching her. I turned to take a look and from 8-10 yards away from me I see a red head looking at me. I drop my call pick the Wichester Black Shadow off my lap stick the barell out the window and let him have it. Not my biggest bird but with the way things were going I couldnt pass him up. 21lbs 10 inch beard 1/2 inch spurs (worn down from ice) ![]() |
RE: team 19 check in
updated scores

RE: team 19 check in
finaly got out today, I did not bring my son because of school and I thought I would give thoes birds a fiting chance. I took out the bow instead of the Remington. To my supprise I stalked a bird around 80 yrds into an open field...... what a rush..... He was not moving around much and not responding to calls so I thought I would give it a try. Positioned myself to his behind and walked slow and quiet untill I was a little over 20 yrds and put an arrow in its back.... flew up and looked around, so I plugged him again.... I never thought I would be able to stalk a turkey in an open field.... I will post pictures when I get to work, but here are its measurement
21 poounds 1 inch spurs on both sides 8 3/4 inch beard The beard is the stringyish (if thats a word) thing I have ever seen. The pic I took is just laying on the ruler, but when you straighten it out a little it grows.......... I just think its cool that I stalked it with a bow... |
RE: team 19 check in
That is very impressive. Congrats and can't wait to see the pictures.
