WoW, those are all some dandies.

Alot of the native americans around here are bringing some huge whitetails and mulies into town.(they get to rifle hunt a month before non-tribal people do). As for bowhunting in my area, it has really slowed down. I get to take off work 2 hours early tomarrow and will head out for an evening hunt so we will see what happens. As for trail cam pics, the nice bucks i had on trail cam have all changed night patterns so who knows where they are at. I have not had any other hunting pressure around yet so i think they are still there.

On_Point 10-10-2012 05:21 PM

Good luck to ya tomorrow evening Marty. Enjoy & be safe.

On_Point 10-10-2012 05:29 PM

So Ive got a question for my teammates, any of you use illuminated nocks?
This season Ive purchased a half dozen new Easton Excels & a half dozen Rage Slip Cam broadheads, & Im wanting to purchases 2 or 3 lighted nocks to add to these bad M.F.ers.
Ive been reading reviews galore on lighted nocks & am leaning towards ArcherFlame after reading hundreds of reviews, but Im not fully sold on any brand thusfar. Any thoughts or reviews on the subject would be helpful & appreciated. Thanks.

sdhunter11 10-10-2012 05:51 PM

My dad uses them, he uses the lumenocks, he likes them. I always joke around with him having like 35$ invested in one arrow between, arrow, broadhead, and nocks lol and he misses most of the time anyway.

Bowman4440 10-11-2012 08:36 AM

I used the lumenoks years ago when they first came out and if they actually lit up when you shot they were awesome but they still had some bugs to work out, I'm sure they are good to go now though.

On_Point 10-11-2012 09:45 AM

Yea, Ive read alot of mixed reviews on Luminock. They seem to still be working out the bugs all these years later. Im not impressed, & if Im not impressed Im definitely not going to spend the $$$.

Anyways Jared, hows momma doing? She should be about ready to deliver the baby soon shouldn't she? You two all ready for the little one to arrive?

sdhunter11 10-11-2012 06:45 PM

well guys, i stuck a dandy About 5 minutes before sundown. I hit him at about 25 yards low in the shoulder, The arrow went all the way through and had alot of fat on it with a little blood on the fletch. I waited about fifteen minutes and took up the trail for about an hour with a flashlight. It has good constant blood, i followed for about 250 yards and am going to go back at dawn and pick it back up. Do you guys think i will find him?

Mottz 10-11-2012 06:47 PM

I hope you do sd! I wanna see him!

sdhunter11 10-11-2012 07:01 PM

Im just worried about all the fat on the arrow, but with decent blood for that distance, i dont know, im worried to say the least.

On_Point 10-11-2012 07:03 PM

Congrats bud!!! Youll find em. A complete pass thru is gonna bleed em out, though with it being forward it may take a little while. Give em some time to expire & go back & put your tag on him. Again, congrats man, Im psyched for ya Marty.

Is this a new buck or you got pics of him? What do you mean by dandy, 140-150 or is he even bigger?

sdhunter11 10-11-2012 07:06 PM

I think he might be Mr. split brow or comparable anyway, maybe around 130

On_Point 10-11-2012 07:10 PM

Awesome!!!

You know anyone tribal or non-tribal with a deer dog to help ya track?
Hell man, I wish we were there to help ya. I know the anticipation of waiting all night to track that doe, so this wait has got to be killin ya. 8) But just think, by morning he'll be dead & youll have a wall hanger buck.

sdhunter11 10-11-2012 07:14 PM

I hope so, this is going to be a huge downer if i cant find him, i am probably going to go through a whole damn can of copehagen tonight just waiting for the sun to come up.

sleep will be hard for you to come by tonight my friend. lol Enjoy!

On_Point 10-11-2012 07:31 PM

If it is that split brow buck, your right, he is a dandy. Im hopin the best for ya.
What were ya estimating that buck at measuring? If I were you Id probably spend most of the night looking at trail cam pics of my bucks. lol

sdhunter11 10-11-2012 07:37 PM

I estimate split brow to be between 130 and 140. I didnt get a very good look at this ones brow tines, i just seen some tall g2's.

sdhunter11 10-11-2012 07:47 PM

its kinda hard to tell cause i havent got any photos of split brow since he has been out of velvet

On_Point 10-11-2012 07:53 PM

Im hoping to see some before & after pics.8)

On_Point 10-11-2012 08:18 PM

Well Marty, keep us posted. Id be gettin down on my knees & askin the good Lord to cut me a little slack on this one. haha
Have a good night bud.

sdhunter11 10-12-2012 10:08 AM

well I went out this morning at first light and found the blood trail and followed it for another 3/4 mile until i lost it. I lost it on top of a hill. If the buck went off either side of that hill he had draws of brush thickets to go into. I walked all the draws off both sides of the hill and never found him. I think he stayed on top of the hill and headed into an unpicked sunflower field about 200 yrds away. I walked the fenceline of the sunflower field and never did find any blood or hair on or around the fenceline. I got about 6 hours invested into trailing him so i guess i did about all i can do.

On_Point 10-12-2012 11:23 AM

That's no good Marty. Bow hunters seem to have some pretty ****ty luck at times.
If that deer was scoring 130-140, I'd put in at least another 6 hours. My first bow kill was a 130 that I hit too far back & ended up looking for him for 3 days. I had around 20 hours invested in searching for him & ended up finding him on day three. He was tore up pretty good & the meat wasn't salvageable, but the antlers were & they're hanging in my living room. 8)

So get back out there & find that deer.

RisnerPSE 10-12-2012 11:56 AM

Was there any places where it looked like he bedded and there were pools or patches of blood? This hit sounds like the hit my dad put on a buck last year. My dad hit in front of the shoulders and we had good blood for a mile before he got to land we could not go on.. This deer is still alive today. If you hit in front of the shoulder and the deer was broad side or quartering away i believe he will live. If he was quartering to you at all then there is a chance he is dead. Good Luck. Don't let it get you down if you don't find it. Learn from your mistake and move on.

sdhunter11 10-12-2012 03:58 PM

he was slightly quartering away, the arrow went in shoulder and i believe it went out the front of the brisket, just missing the vitals, I think he is probably still alive, he never did bed down, and didnt seem to have any problem going up and down hills and draws. he will probably be one of those limpers you see during rifle season. It just sucks, i would have rather just plain missed him than to leave him running around wounded.

Mottz 10-12-2012 06:45 PM

Any water sources out there where he may have run to? I hate the thought of you giving up and not finding the deer but if you believe that you have done all you can, (and I don't know your hunting situation so I don't judge) well then I'm sorry to hear about the misfortune. It happens to the best of us and has happened to me so I know the feeling of what the heck went wrong. Keep at it and get another one! But keep your eyes on the ground to in case you happen to stumble across him. Good Luck out there!

sdhunter11 10-12-2012 06:50 PM

im pretty sure he is somewhere in a square mile of unharvested sunflower in which i do not have permission to enter so for lack of better words, im screwed either way.

Mottz 10-13-2012 08:31 AM

Going to head out this afternoon and with a SW wind switching to the West by early evening, I'm hoping to sit in the stand that the buck was by last week. We also had some nice rain last night for once in a long time so hope that gets em up and movin.

On_Point 10-13-2012 08:38 AM

good luck to ya Ryan. I'm also heading afield here in a few. Strong storms rolled through this morning & will return again after dark. The deer should be moving.

Mottz 10-13-2012 05:59 PM

That was un-eventful. Just seen a family of coons. They were calling for a SW to West wind but I swear I was getting hit by the breeze from the SE. So I'm guessing that may have had something to do with it.

Mottz 10-13-2012 06:56 PM

Would you guys agree with me that these are 2 different bucks?

sdhunter11 10-14-2012 07:59 AM

yup, the one on top has a broken g3 on the right side, the bottom one doesnt. The bottom one looks to have more mass as well. The bottom buck looks like an old deer as well, very big body, he would definetaly be on my hit list.

sdhunter11 10-14-2012 08:05 AM

well, i got my broadheads resharpened and i think i have licked my wounds enough to head back out tomarrow for a birthday buck. Hopefully the bucks are as active as they were on thursday evening. I have been so pissed off about the shot i pulled off on that deer that i have been practicing like a mad man so hopefully it pays off.

I wish i could have invested more time into him but i am "on-call" for work. I cant leave town from friday after work to monday morning. It sucks i know, but its the life of a line-man i guess.

Mottz 10-14-2012 08:15 AM

Practice is a good part of it, but controlling that heartbeat when the shot on the animal comes is a whole different story. Don't beat yourself up about it too much. It happens and maybe he will be out there for another chance.

sdhunter11 10-14-2012 08:27 AM

That would be a welcoming sight, to see him come limping by at 20 yards lol.

dmax4me 10-14-2012 12:33 PM

No luck here at home yet. I did see 7 does and fawns last night. Hopefully they stick around. The bucks will be soon to follow in a couple of weeks. We are headed back out to Ohio on Friday. Hopefully the bucks will be starting to move out there.

Read your post and think you invested a fair amount of time. That's happened to me before. Doesn't take much...miscalculation of yardage, slight flinch, arrow knicks a twig, etc...arrow drops and hits the leg under the near side lung. Hit a nice 8 pt like that one year and got him during gun season. At least you are seeing good bucks. Everything here is nocturnal. Ruts coming though!

On_Point 10-15-2012 05:45 PM

Well, I destroyed a yearling doe this afternoon. I put 125gr of Rage on her at 40 yards & she dropped where she stood. She tried to get up & run after being knocked over but with a hole on both sides of her spewing blood like a fountain, she didnt have what it takes to get up & run. I f$#kin love those Rage broadheads, they hit like a truck.

And Team Pass Thru continues to secure the lead with six kills on the scorecard.

Mottz 10-15-2012 06:02 PM

Gotta Love that! Great Job!!

Happy B-Day Marty, hope ya had a good one.:party0005::party::woot::birthday:

Outdoorcountry 10-16-2012 09:11 AM

Way to go Jason! Now that you got the first kill out of the way, it's time to put some horns on the ground! I'm thinking the seeking phase of the rut is coming mid next week.
