RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
What a weekend. Lots of action, but nothing I wanted to shot. It took less than a minute and there was a 6 pt. at 10 yards, barely had the bow up inthe stand. I was hunting with two friends and one of them closed the deal on a nice 8pt on Sat. night. There is plenty of future deer. We saw 8 different bucks that I hope can make through the season. I also spent the weekend getting ready for the Elk trip. Going on the 10 of Oct with my dad. Has anyone been to Craig CO?
Keep shooting!!! Pete |
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Pete, good luck with the elk!! Just curious, what part of the country are you from? Up here in western NY, you can barely throw a stick without hitting someone named Wykoff.
|
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Gundeck
Wykoff is a small town in SouthEast MN. We named a giant buck the "Wykoffwonder" and I went ahead and missed him last year. We believe that he is a 12pt. with long tines and 20in spread. Would have scored 160 to 170. You wouldn't believe the story but I missed him 12 times in 2 different opportunities. I had to watch him walk away with 4 does at about 30 yards. No shells left!!!!! Then he only went a few hundred yards down to the corn field. Him and the does let me walk back to the house "to get more shell" they never even moved as I was only less than 150yds away. When I got back they had walked away. My dad watch him chase does in the field all week and I seen him a few weeks later but couldn't get a shot. I've never meet anyone named Wykoff but if I did I would feel pretty bad for them! |
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Pete,
That is quite the story...I think I would buy a new gun! We still have 3 more weeks before our season starts! |
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Well guys, I spent all last week in eastern Oregon, mainly elk hunting, but looking at some bucks too. I made a stalk on the last day on about a 130-140 mulie, but no-go. when we spotted them, there were 2 bucks, when we came over the rise, there were 8 deer, Busted! Anyway, deer season opens up again in Nov. so I'll be back on it then.

RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
It's been a while since I've been on. Been busy getting ready for this week. I've been watching a pair of giants on public ground. Checked on friday and they are all still together in a group of 6 . I walked the area a few weeks ago and saw about 15 deer mostly bucks. Saw a 7 pointer that would go around 125 and a 140-ish 8 py with a sticker on his g-2. It also appeared that he had a metal tag in his ear. I dont' know what that was about. I also saw some does that had tags in both their ears. I plan on passing on the handful of 140-150 bucks there in hopes of seeing one of the two big boys, One is an 8 and the other is a 10, will go 160 and 170 respectively. Looks like the weather is going to be prime for the opener on Wed. Big cold front coming on Tues. I cant wait, I'm leaving work at noon to get in my spot by 2:30. Keep ya posted.

RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
season has started pretty good for me. been seeing lots of deer, and some nice bucks. Got a doe this morning and have passed on an 8 pt this morning and yesterday morning too, they both would have went around 130. each one was within 10 yards. also saw a good buck fight thursday evening . a real big 8 was fighting a 2 yr old for about 15 minutes, they were still fighting when i left in the dark, prettty cool. Iv'e seen a dozen different bucks so far. not too bad for the areas I hunt

RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
hey guys, just wanted to report that my 9 yr old son got his first deer tonite. It is youth season here this weekend. we didn't see anything this morning. we went to a different spot tonite and saw a deer under the tree we were going to sit next too. It's always a good early dropping oak. anyway I spotted the deer and asked him if he wanted to shoot it and of course he siad yes. It was about 75 yrds away and he made a perfect heart shot on it with open sighted 20 ga. it ran about 60 yrds. We thought it was a doe when he shot but turned out to be a spike. He is on cloud 9! it was a really cool nite. I told him I shot 5or 6 boxes of slugs before I ever hit my first deer. He got his on his first shot.

RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Hey thats great,Something you and your boy will remember forever.
|
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Congrats PJ to you and your son. My son is 12 and wants to hunt so bad. He has to wait until he is 14 in NY.
Went to camp this w/e. Lots of small rubs and scrapes. Everyhting we saw was from small bucks. Although I didn't get too close to my "bat cave" stand, I could tell there is a lot of activity along the entrance. Also set up a new stand called the "ant hill" stand. I placed it over looking a large field in a pine tree. All set for next Saturday. |
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Congrats to you and your boy, I can still remember my first deer, age 14, like it was yesterday.
|
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
well i drew blood tonight... but it wasn't on a deer. i ended up shooting a coyote with my bow. It was a 30 yard shot and he piled up in less than 80 yards. I have had many close encounters with these wiley old things but i have never been able to seal the deal. Tonight i almost shot myself a doe as well.. All she had to do was take one more step and she was mine but then yet another coyote came and spooked the doe. Just me luck hahaha oh well, it was a good night all around :)

RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Congrats PJ, get us some pictures!

RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Hello everyone
I am back from CO what an elk hunt. We saw plenty of elk, my dad closed the deal on a cow in the first hour of the hunt and I was lucky enough to take a cow with less than an hour to go on the last day. A small 5X5 stepped out after I shot my cow, but was not big enough for the wall so I was glad I didn't have to shot him. Maybe he will come back next year. I learned a lot this hunt, but one thing in this area is to get in farther and higher than anyone else. I just wish I would have done that on day one not day four. If anyone has a suggestion for a do it yourselfer on public land let me know. I am definitly looking for a 280 inch or better bull and I know that they can come of of public land. |
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
congrats on the elk wykoffwonder:)
|
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Congrats all on your successes so far. It sounds like it will be a great season over all. NOW, let's get some buck!! SEASON IS NOW OPEN IN NY!!! WOOHOO!!! Got back from the VFW conference late Sat night and was in the blind early Sun morning. I saw two button buck (or gender-challenged doe) smacking heads about a half hour after sunrise. Had a nice doe come by around 10 AM, but didn't present a good shot. Nonetheless, I did see deer and have high hopes for the season! Good luck all.

RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Flung one at a very nice 10 pointer this weekend and half way there it hit a limb and went left and hit him right in
the butt[:@] he limped off. I could see the arrow and it only went in about 4 inches tracked it about 40 yards and blood stopped. So I can only hope it will be OK. He was about a 130 and I am so Glade it hit him there and not somewhere worse[&:]. He was only 25 yards and not sure what happened, lets just say that tree got cut down and thrown into the next county! Going back down for the 1st week of November so the area I say him will have 2 weeks to sit. |
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
shot a nice 8 point the next day after I missed the 10 point have not had a chance to score him yet. Will have story in post. But wonted to let you guys know we scored one he will go maybe 110-115. Not the biggest in the woods
but I am happy. ![]() |
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
WOW...we are finally on the board...CONGRATS ON THE NICE BUCK!
|
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Congrats, CJ!!! Finally, we get on the board. Thanks for starting things off. I was going to take the morning off work, but it is too stinkin' windy here today.
|
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Congrats CJ
Anything with a bow is a trophy! Thanks for getting us on the board now its time for me. |
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Way to go CJ! Its good to be on the board. I'm still trying to close in on one of the giants I've been seeing on the public ground. I saw another stud sat. morning. (of course iwas still in my truck about 150 yrds from where i park) He has at least 15 pts. Split g-2's and stickers to boot. should go close to 180! I think I've located their bedding area, its on a long finger sticking out into the lake. am looking forward to trying to slip in there sat. morning. Hope I'm not messing up holding out for one of them. I 've found myself purposely avoiding the areas around my house where I know I could kill a 140-150. Also , I had some decoyy action a couple nights ago 2 bucks came right to it
|
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
Nice job CJ, glad to hear you got one after the bad luck with the 10 pt.
Guys, I was close this past Sunday morning. 8:00 came around and I finally seen 2 of the 3 bucks I got pictures of (posted those pictures earlier in here) from early August. One stepped out into the field then 10 steps behind him came the other one. It was the big 8 point leading the way and he gave me a quick look then a few minutes later passed by at 15 yds. With his head down and walking slow I drew back, settled in, then gave a grunt to stop him....ahhh both took off. I couldn't believe it. I needed 2 seconds. He went from a slow walk to a trot just like that, never even stopped or looked. The deer has always stopped long enough to let an arrow fly but not this one. Dang it! To be honest I'm just glad to finally see them again. Next time I guess. |
RE: Official Team 7 Hangout
CONGRATS! Glad we're on the board, I still have to wait about a month til my 2nd season opens up. Good luck all.
