Made it out again yesterday after work. Saw 3 does. The only one that offered a shot still had some faint spots on her hind quarters. She stopped broadside at 15 yards in my shooting lane. In a few weeks, when the spots are gone, she'll be fair game. I don't want my first deer of the year to have spots.

Yote,

I will probably try these guys out around 9-17 NOV, they are in Allison, KS.

I will leave for TX this weekend, I have access to some property that has some nice ones on it.

A couple years back I got a 168" off it. We know there are bigger ones there, but shot opportunities without feeders are tough in the TX scrub.

This years plan is to get in early in the season and see if we can get in there while they are still in bachelor groups.

Six ground blinds on 1700 acres, 2 hunters, 6 days to get it done.

We normally only take 4 bucks a year off this ranch and have a good age structure there.

We only have one trail camera there and won't have any pictures till next week.

Wow Leo, 1700 acres is a lot to cover for 2 guys. I know Texas has lots of good deer. I was there in December 06 and I saw more bucks in a weekend than I've seen here since! Good luck man!

I missed a nice fat doe on wednesday evening. Probably my 6th hunt this year and the first deer I have seen in the woods. I started off in my treestand, but after an hour of not being able to get comfortable and not caring for my spotI decided to hunt off of the ground.I sat down on a tree stump next to a pine tree. At about 530 I see a doe off to myleft about 50 yards. She takes her time working her way over to me.She gets to about 20 yards and stops, she is facing me at this time. She puts her head down and I draw. She picks her head up and stares at me.For about 2 minutes she just stood their weaving her head, ears sticking straight up trying to figure out what the hell I am. I am still holding at full draw, shaking like a leaf. She finally starts walking to my left coming broadside in some fairly high grass. I can see her body but not her head as she has it down and I can't see her legs because of the grass.I am still at full draw for what felt like an eternity and all of a sudden I just pulled the trigger on my release. As soon as I hit the release she dropped about a foot and I watched my arrow sail right over her by about 4 inches. This was my first archery shot at a live animal and I choked. When I actually fired I had lost my concentration of the target.I will not make the same mistake next time.I know this is a long read but I always enjoy hearing about other peoples hunts so I thought I would share mine. I will get back out their Wednesday and hunt for most of the rest of next week.

Wow Don...so close!! That's what I love about bowhunting. We've all had that happen to us. Hopefully next time you'll connect.

Live and learn brother. We have all made mistakes. You'll probably actually learn more from the times you mess up than you will when it goes right because you tend not to forget much about it.

I just got back from Ohio.
Didn't see a thing the first day. Passed on smallish 7pt this am.

I'll be headed back at it on Wednesday. My new truck is in the shop AGAIN!! [:@][:@] This is the 3rd time they've had it to fix the same flippin problem. I'm about fed up with it.

Finally get to take to the woods tomorrow. Been a long damn wait! Weather looks awesome, high of 62, and a little wind. Compared to the last couple years, it will be like hunting in the winter! I bought a bunch of new warm waether camo too...perhaps that was the jinx. I gota new camera arm too for my climber, so I should be able to lay down some decent footage if the opportunity is there.

NC, great job with your cousin, always nice to put someone else in the driver's seat!

Good luck Mike!

I just got off the phone with my buddy in NC that has 400 acres in Schyuler Co. He's at the airport in Detroit...one more connection in to Peoria and he'll be there. I'm jealous! I wish I had his kind of money to own land up there!

RE: Official Team 39 thread

What kind of truck do you have NC?

If I can wake up on time, I'll be down in Piatt County for opening day. (have to get up at 3am... ugh, I usually go to bed at 2am [:'(])

I've never huntedon the property before, so it should be interesting.

good luck everyone.

Christine-it's an 08 Silverado. I traded in my 03 Silverado for it. I'm having second thoughts on that move but there's nothing I can do about it now.

1500? 2500hd? What's wrong with it?

I have a '01 2500hd silverado. One of these days, I'll need to replace it. It just has little problems now (knocks furiously on wood). It's been a good truck, hopefully it will last a couple more years.. Sorry to hear you're having problems with your new one. [&o]

Its a 1500 crew cab ltz. There's some kind of squeeking noise in the steering column when I turn. After 2 failed attempts they think they have it figured out this time. The service guy said he found a bulletin from Chevy about the steering hub/boot. He ordered one yesterday and he's gonna call me when it comes in. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

YooperMike...any luck?? Watchya seeing? One more question...how do you like your Summit Goliath? I'm 6'5" and I'm leaning towards that stand. Help a brother out.

YooperMike 10-02-2008 12:30 PM

RE: Official Team 39 thread

Finally got out to the hunting ground yesterday to scout a little. Looks really nice, good sign, lots of deer around according to the sign. Can hunt on Saturday finally. I jumped up a 120" 8 yesterday, not sure if will get an arrow not, have to get a closer look.

Hey Dave, i LOVE my Goliath. I'm 6'10" and 350 and it fits me just fine. This is my third season with it, and it is the first climber i've ever used. You will definitely be happy with it. I bought the side bags for it, and that has eliminated the need for a backpack too. I mounted a bowholder onto the top section last year, and just last week I mounted a camera armbracket to it. After I hunt on Saturday, I'll see how the arm works in real-life situations.

NCRemington700 10-02-2008 02:59 PM

RE: Official Team 39 thread

You're 6'10" and 350?!!? Holy crap! I'm 6'5" 200 and I'm bigger than most! I'm not sure I want to drop that kind of money though. I can get a Gorilla Pro Series Greyback Deluxe hunter for a steal. Retail is $340 but I can get it for a helluva lot cheaper than that.

YooperMike 10-02-2008 04:24 PM

RE: Official Team 39 thread

You won't be happy until you get a Summit, trust me. The number one feature that many people overlook is that they are ALL welded. This means there absolutely parts to rattle when you are climbing. I can climb up a tree like a ring-tailed lemur, only quieter! And for comfort, Summit is undoubtedly number one, there is no one that will tell you otherwise, even die hard Lone Wolf people can admit summit is more comfortable. I know I sound like a Summit salesman, but this is the one product that I will defend to the death!

NCRemington700 10-02-2008 06:38 PM

RE: Official Team 39 thread

Being that the Summit's are welded, that makes a big difference. That was my first choice. After thinking about it, I'm kinda leaning towards the 180 SS. The bar in the front sticks out farther than the viper so it should give more leg room. Do your feet hang off the platform when you're sitting down in the Goliath?

YooperMike 10-03-2008 07:14 AM

RE: Official Team 39 thread

The 180 is pretty sweet, its a giant stand. The only concern, if you could call it that, would be climbing with that bar so far out there. I find it easier to climb with as little ass as possible on the bar, and the 180's bar being farther out, I think it may be a little tougher to climb, especially when getting started up the tree. If you want to use it as more of a hand climber, as opposed to a sit and climb, then I think you will be fine, but I am not nearly monkey-like enough for that. You may want to look at the new Titan, which is bigger than the goliath, and the platform of the Titan is the biggest there is with any climber out there. I am probably going to buy a titan platform for my goliath. My feet only hang over if I am stretching, otherwise there is plenty of room for them. I usually sit at like barstool height, in terms of distance between platform and base, and at that height, my feet are usually in the middle of the platform, but definetely a couply rungs from the end.

NCRemington700 10-03-2008 08:35 AM

RE: Official Team 39 thread

That's great info Mike. I really do appreciate it. I'm very interested in the Titan. I was actually looking at it on another web browser right now. I'm looking at some new one's on ebay. It looks like it's gonna run me about $300...unless you know of a place that's cheaper?

HNI_Christine 10-03-2008 02:28 PM

RE: Official Team 39 thread

Hey guys, I went out on opening morning here in IL.

1) I managed get up at 3am. 2) Drive the 60 miles to the park without hitting any deer. 3) Find a tree and get up it in my climber in the dark without killing myself. These things alone would make for a good morning for me.

I did however walk into somebody's hitch-haul as I walked through the parking lot in the dark. (ouch.) Then I noticed my release wasn't with me while I was on the trail. Then my flashlight died. So I went back to the parking lot (walking like a zombie with my arms straight out in front of me to feel for trees.. dang, it was dark) got a functional flashlight, found my release and I was off to the woods again.

At 8:30 amthis doe made the mistake of offering me a 15 yard, slightly quartering away shot.

It's an earn-a-buck property so as soon as I can make it back down there... I'll be buck huntin' baby! :D:D:D

(not that I'll be passin up does... Freezer's a long way from being full)

I had no luck this afternoon. I'm hitting it hard this weekend so with the cooler temps hopefully something will walk by me. Good luck to everyone headed out this weekend and be safe!

way to go!!! I cannot wait to see what you guys bring in tomorrow. I will not be able to get out till monday morning. The place i am going has a nice non-typical thats walking around. Although i think i will take the first legal buck that presents a shot. I have never taken a buck with a bow before....

Well guys I saw a few bucks but were all small. I also saw a group of 3 or 4 deer but could not see what they were. The only shot I had was at a small 6pt. I'll be out just about everyday after work so I'll keep you guys updated.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

NCRemington700 10-06-2008 06:10 AM

RE: Official Team 39 thread

Well no luck for me this weekend. Only a couple of small does on Saturday. At the property beside mine, my cousin's father in law shot a 4 pt...the same one I've let walk twice. Needless to say I was not very happy about that. The kicker was, the buck was with 3 does!! Why not shoot a doe!?!? He said he thought the rack was bigger than it was! [:@] No such thing as that much ground shrinkage! [:@] Oh well.

YooperMike 10-06-2008 07:41 AM

RE: Official Team 39 thread

Finally hit the woods on Saturday evening. Had 9 does filter by, all within shooting distance, and no shots fired. Couldn't get drawn a couple times for being looked at, behind brush a couple times, just didn't work out. Last night saw 2 bucks, had a small 8 under me for about 20 minutes, saw a mid-130s at around 5:00, but never closed to more than 80 yards. I'm approximately 2 pints low from all the damn mosquitos though. Good days in the woods, first time on the new property, so im hopeful its going to produce!

Well I've got my newest toy, sitting in a box, on my front porch right now. It's a new Summit Titan. I can't wait to get home and mess with it! Hopefully I'll be able to use it tomorrow in the woods.

I hope everyone is hunting a lot since nobody's checking in!! :D

Good luck out there everyone!

Yeah buddy! I hope you like it, and if you don't like it, send it north!

Raining here today, pretty miserable day actually. Looks like more heat for this weekend, going to try and call up a turkey I think on Saturday. I've never gotten one with the bow, so would like to do that. Good luck tomorrow NC!
