RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
well i lied in my last post friday morning....thought i about kicked the cold....HA...it was the calm before the storm...felt real good friday morning....by the time my last class rolled around i wanted to take a drill to my sinuses....it got BAD...eyes felt like they were buggin out, watering...whole 9yds...last class let us out early(3hr class so it was still long) pretty sure it was because i looked like i might die lol...actually thought about running out of the room once....but went home and went to the dr and got antibiotics....still not 100% but dang better than i was...didnt do a dang thing all weekend.....
Saturday morning will be here in a hurry now......hopefully the weather cooperates....looking good thus far! Rybo, cant wait to hear details and maybe some pics! funny how different people would had different feelings...i know ALOT of guys would not be happy at all if they left the state and spent the time and money and came back with tags unfilled...glad you had a good time and made it back safe!! good luck this week with the longbow!! i wanted to head out behind the house to look for a doe this weekend but never made it.... |

Here's the link to my thread about my trip. Oh believe me Mauser I wanted to kill something, really bad. But getting mad over not doing so isn't worth it. I had an incredible time, and the experiences I had are more than many can say, but at times I was looking to the skies wondering what more I needed to do to get things to bounce my way. |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Another day closer my PA brothers of the bow.
And our other brothers waiting on opening day. |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
I was able to get out behind the house last night for the early doe season. Took the longbow along. Nothing all night, except a flying squirrel that came in right at dark & started squeaking at me. They are the coolest little critters, fairly bold & inquisitive.

And another day down.
Anybody's season open tomorrow Oct 1? We should all be hunting soon. |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
I should have hunted last night. Instead I was cutting grass and getting stuff done around the house. 3 does walked the woods at the edge of the yard. [:@]
That's ok, I know where they live ;) |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Rob, id imagine you expirience critters kinda regular climbing poles? them flying squirrels are neat...used to see them regularly coonhunting at one spot thats now posted and cant hunt....amazing little animals...
i can relate to your story...i was doing a wood duck project...landowner i was working for/with had boxes up that werent maintained...he had a JD Gator so we loaded it up with tools and such, and a SMALL homeade flimsy alumanum ladder. bad news kinda ladder. i never thought to wear my harness...that would been a brilliant idea...all the boxes were higher than the small ladder. im on the top rung of this flimsy ladder...hole to the entrance of the duck box was about face level..a little lower..i was undoing the cables to take it down when i saw a flash of SOMETHING jump out of the hole and run up the tree...i screamed like a girl and about fell off the ladder...looked up and theres a gray squirrel barking his head off at me..the old timer that i was with was ROLLING...he loved it. he was yelling about how he wished he had a camera coz it was halarious how scared i was and how i screamed....i saw nothing funny about it lol.....so i calm down and go back to work....surely cant be more than one in that dang box....sure enough another one scared me worse...think it actually used my jacket to climb the tree lol...them suckers had that box absolutely FULL of leaf litter and acorns...it was amazing.....i felt terrible leaving them out in the cold(waited till like feb to do the project so we could use the Gator...ground had to be frozen to get to the boxes.... im pumped....weather looks amazing for Saturday!!! and i get to head home 4 hours earlier friday my last 2 classes are canceld!! i need to do some more broadhead shooting...i shot this weekend and dont know if it was the fact i was cracked out on cold meds or if something is wrong, but they werent flying as great as they were....been shooting at my buddies with FPs and its been shooting great...so im glad i get to go home early...i'll have time to verify flight and/or fine tune it....though i had atleast 4 arrows ready to go...probably fine i know that day time cold medicane kills me.... |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
I'm headed out today, for the long drive to Canada.. Good luck to you guys who have seasons opening on Saturday. I'll see ya in a couple weeks.
|
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Good luck Joey.
|
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Thanks Ryan.
I was talking to Troy about your hunt out there with him... sounded like you we on a lot of bulls. Good to hear you guys had a great hunt. |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
good luck joey! have a safe trip!!
ya'll fellow PAians ready!?!?! i know im chompin at the bit....got saturday morning until afternoon and all day mon and tues to hunt here at home...got 3 spots i wanna hit....the honey hole saturday morning...a new spot (funnel) i never hunted a morning and evening....and a funnel/corn field edge i never got to hunt with corn against the edge...landowner says theres so many deer in there it reminds him of the "old days" its going to be hard to get into there without busting them all out...i cant decide how i wanna do it... im really hoping it all comes together saturday morning in the honey hole....i hate to "end" my season so early...i just know my head needs to be focused on books...not bucks....started into laws this week, and i already know that these next couple weeks are gunna be zero fun. i'll still get time to hunt...but an unfilled buck tag is like a little voice in my head..lol...ya'll know how that is....we'll see how it goes...gotta have atleast 4 1" points on one side...a 4pt half rack has a spread of infinity doesnt it?? :D (just kidding i'll atleast wait for one with both sides....well....unless the ONE side is REAL nice...lol) |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
well PA boys, less than 12hrs and i'll be waking up!!!!
i finally got around to final tuning the muzzys today....they just werent being consistant at all...i couldnt figure it out, but figured i needed to TUNE it out...noticed my longer range groups were much more open than i felt they should have been as well which told me something wasnt 100%...wanted to do it last weekend but was laid up sick...no BH target at school meant it was TODAY or i wasnt hunting in the morning plain and simple. woke up and spent about 2hrs in the back yard....well...a good hour or so of shooting and tuning...a couple minor rest adjustments had me shafting BH arrows with my FPs at 30yds...about 6" right...(i do it backwards..i shoot the BHs then i shoot the FPs to BH tune...shoot 1 BH at a spot..then a FP at the spot..saves shafts!) figured that was PERFECT...adjusted the sights to them and am shooting GREAT...i swear i gained 20fps....i couldnt notice that my arrows werent flying true....till i hit that "sweet spot" and boy them suckers are like lazers and hitting like a sack of bricks... got all the gear ready...feels like im forgetting something....but i got all the gear ready...i got my arrows, bow, release, camo, boots harness, and stand...and pack...not sure what i can be forgetting, but i have that feeling....i got the essentials, i know that much...its all going in the truck shortly...that way its daylight and i can see what i got and wont forget something at 0430 when its dark and im half asleep... be safe out there...dont forget the camera...YOU, BUCK, BOW!!! weather still looks beautiful....im pumped. wish we could hunt this evening....the somewhat poopy weather just cleared out...this evening would been good...but tomorrow morning aught be good as well..its gunna be chilly with these clear skies... ahhh better throw the hunting license in the bin with the camo!! maybe thats what i felt like i was forgetting.... |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Sounds, good Mauser. I have all the clothes sprayed and hanging outside, bow was shot one more time tonight, and I drilled the 20 and 30yd marks. Put the quiver on, and shot, and it was still dead on. I may leave it one depending on how cumbersome I'm being in the stand tomorrow in the dark[&:]
I'm about to head to my cabin for a meeting, then it's back home to get some sleep before the A.M. I have a busy day tomorrow in between hunts, so I won't check back in probably until Sunday sometime. Good luck guys, I expect to see some antler from you guys tomorrow! |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Good luck guys. I'll be anticipating tomorrow nights recaps on the day.
|
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
wow am i fuming.....pretty sure there was ZERO percent chance of rain.....its absolutely pouring right now....
still got a longgggg while before the sung comes up....gunna take my time and get to my spot and sit in the truck till it slows down or quits....radar looks like i'll be getting wet off and on all morning.... the only good thing is that it might help my hunting... good luck guys!!! |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
It only sprinkled then cleared here in my neck of the woods. We saw 1 spike and a doe with 2 fawns. No shots taken this morning. Here's a pan of my hunting area on video if your interested.
Will be back in this stand this afternoon. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v499/Poorguy/Videos/?action=view&current=HoneyHolefoodplotstand.fl v |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
well, the rain cleared out for me as well...but boy it was pouring when i woke up...drug my feet a bit waitin to see what it was gunna do...watched radar etc...was still at the top of my tree settled in before 0600....took me alot longer to gear up than i thought! just been a while since i geared up, packed it all and carried it lol...
not a deer seen...sat till 1130 or so...did hear some turkeys chatting just out of sight...tons of tree rats, which make me look like im baiting lol...corn field is 100yds away or so...them danged squirrels brought tons of ears of corn into my setup and scattered them about lol.... HECK of a trail leading right though my setup into the corn....first year that field has EVER been corn...maybe its going to make my spot more of an evening spot....i dont know... im heading to a coon hunting competition tonite..probably wont bother taking stand anywhere since i gotta leave by 7:00...got all day mon and tues to bowhunt...very few competitions locally i can take the dog to..a handful a year...so i try to make it to them when i can... farmer started mowing hay a hair before 11 and will be mowing and raking my other field later on so im kinda outta options even if i wanted to hunt this evening |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Well my season picked up right where it left off last year....in the dumper! :([:@]
Sat an evening sit in Ohio on friday. No deer. Woke to a decently hard rain saturday morning off a forecast for none. Go figure. Didn't see a deer on stand saturday. Saw 4 while leaving my morning stand. I don't think I've ever gone an opener without seeing a deer from stand. It's even worse when you think about how many deer are in my general area and I can't even manage a doe sighted. |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
rybo....hang in there....saturday was slow for EVERYONE ive talked to...i really think that rain screwed us...atleast morning hunts....
back at it tomorrow for me...think im gunna hunt a corn field edge in the morning, then the honey hole in the evening...then do it backward tuesday....(really want to hunt my honey hole in the evening and really wanna hunt the corn field the next evening...but need to pick a good tree out RIGHT over the corn...so tomorrow morning im gunna head into an area real close to the corn and hunt where i know i can...then on the way out i can glass the treeline and get a good tree picked for the next evening...) ive never hunted a corn field edge....im not sure how to got about it for a morning hunt...i do know where i can get into the woods...but id kinda like to sit right over it...but its hard to get between the bedding and field...i dont know what i'll do in the morning...probably just head to a tree i know i can hunt just off into the woods...though i know the bedding is in the other direction...still a good funnel that may produce.. |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Shot a nice mature doe my 3rd time out on Saturday morning. I've seen deer each time with shot opportunities each time but was waiting on a mature doe and one obliged. Not going to hunt for a few days now, have some things to do around home.
I know rising thermal currents in the early morning will take your scent away but along with my X-Scent baselayers, I've become a believer in the new Primos Silver XP scent eliminating spray so far. I had does on both sides(n and s) of me Saturday with a slight north breeze in my face with no alarms yet and the mature doe I shot was south of me. Good luck to everyone hunting this week! |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
When we see deer in the rain, it had them up and moving. When we see no deer in the rain, it kept activity down. Personally I don’t buy into either one. Rain or no rain, I expected to see deer at least some point during the day Saturday, and I didn’t.
Not sure what the week holds as far as me getting out. Going to try after work today & Wednesday, but neither time I will be on a property I have much confidence in, but it beats sitting at home playing Nintendo Wii. CM, Congrats on the doe, that's all I really look for this time of year. |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Saw a total of 15 (possibly 19, but I think 4 were seen twice) and a flock of turkeys on Saturday. Was out to get one of the doe, but none of them presented a solid shot. I will be back out again tonight probably on my clover plot since we're supposed to get a good frost tonight, and I may not get to hunt it much more after that.

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
congrats coug!!
Rybo, you do have a point lol....but i'll blame anything and everything when i dont think i did anything wrong ;) just gotta be in the right place at the right time... matt, that sounds like a GREAT day out...thats more deer in a day than i seen my whole first season! lol... i just got back from my morning hunt....i dont know what i was thinkin when i made my last post...made no sense to do things like that....so i hunted the honey hole this morning, will hunt the corn field for the first time this evening...honey hole tomorrow evening...not sure about tomorrow morning..maybe leave my stand over the corn field... seen the world record button buck this morning...i started glassing him just to look at him real good...but he kept looking behind him, so i did as well hoping his grand daddy was following him...but nothing else showed...very weird how he kept looking back...too often and too long for there NOT to have been something behind him...wasnt alert at all or spooked...but kept looking back. looked like he had decint bases(not huge..but i think maybe bigger than a typical BB)...and looked like about an inch long..and i thought they were still in velvet..if i seen him in the spring i would said he was growing a rack...not sure what the deal was...young deer...coulda just been a button buck that grew a little extra.... also seen 7 turkeys...i love watching, hearing and seeing turkeys...except when im in a deer stand and its not turkey season lol...its a love hate thing...i hate it because 99% of the time they bust me...even though i freeze and hardly blink...dont know if i stand out to their superior eye sight or they see my bright fletchings or what in the world...the 7 today were the first time i DIDNT get busted!!! had one at like 6 or 7 yards with the rest well within 20.... it was great to see a deer...and loved watching the turkeys... good luck guys!! feels great to finally be that time of year! |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Went out for my second sit last evening, and it didn't disappoint. I sat on the northwest edge of my clover/rye plot, and by 5:30, I had 8 turkeys work their way in on the east side. There were two or three good sized toms, and a few jakes. As they fed closer to me, I hear a lot of running and crunching of leaves behind me. Then the purring and putting commenced, and I knew I was quickly being surrounded by more turkeys. 32 MORE turkeys came in all around me to feed in the plot. A few birds were as close as 5yds from the base of my ladder, and I was in the wide open, yet not a single one EVER spotted me (ASAT is ridiculous, it has proven more than effective over the past two seasons). I watched as the flock fed in front of me for about 15-25minutes. Some of the hens pecked and fought a bit. A few laid down to feed (which is interesting as I never saw this before).
Not long after they flew to roost, three nice doe appeared from the East end of the plot. They never got close enough, and as lighted faded, I made my exit, and I don't think they ever got a glimpse of me. As I was walking out, I bumped three more deer down near the pasture in above my Uncle's house. Not shots fired yet, but I'm seeing a ton of deer. |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
I sat with Ben last evening and filmed him. We saw a dozen deer, and more important, a piebald. That was a great sight. He'll be filming me and we'll be sitting in my honey hole. It can happen anytime when I'm there and nothing surprises me. Good luck all.

RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
i went out last evening as well....made it to the corn field funnel setup to find a gut pile at the top edge of the field from saturday....and buck nuts hanging from a corn stalk....alot of disturbance was done so i slipped outta there...i'll save it for later...
went to another funnel i found on an ariel and turkey hunted last spring i knew as a nice area....found a fresh rubline and scrape right away...climbed a tree where i could see the rubs and scrape 20yds away....nice evening....no deer..till the way out. trying to find an easy trail outta there when im 15yds from the edge of the crops and there goes 4 deer.....no monster bucks(i would noticed huge antler) but i dont know what they were...really nothing i coulda done differently.... went coon hunting and found a trail with 3 or 4 scrapes on it within like 40 or 50 yds...then a little farther down the trail i found 2 BIG rubs...6-8" trees and they were hit HARD...this guy looks like he got some tines....im working on trying to figure out some better options to catch him....noone has seen or heard of a biggun in that hollow...but spotters cant really spot it...not saying i know hes a biggun...but these rubs were impressive....he gotta have something half decint on his head..... i didnt go out this morning...gotta get ready to head back to college...hoping to make an evening stand in the honey hole... Rob, thats awesome you seen a piebald!!! good luck with that! buck or doe? Matt, thats ALOT of turkey!! lol...sounds like a great sit... |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
18 hrs and counting of deerless hunting time. [&:]I am headed out after work to a spot I haven't hunted yet this year. Since I don't get much time, I have a little blowdown natural ground blind I sneak into. Last year I got a shot from it, and seen deer better than 50% of the time, so I can't do any worse than I have been.
Matt I wouldn't worry about jumping back in that stand already. You should be fine since you didn't spook any deer out from it. but then again, I haven't seen a deer yet this season so my advice may be useless. [8D] |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
I REALLY must have angered the hunting gods. WOW I can't buy a break. Went to the farm and there were trucks parked in every pull off I could find. Finally went to a part of the place where I knew no one would hunt and just sat there, had a bad wind and everything, it was one of the most pointless nights I've spent in the woods. I have NEVER seen another guy on this farm before the end of october. Once the rut comes yea guys are all over, but none early on. My guess is they saw a monster and that's what's bringing them out. And the next thing is that this farm ALWAYS has a 140-150 buck on it so, who knows how big a buck has to be to bring people out of the woodwork.
|
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
That sucks, Rybo. Things will turn around for you, I'm sure. You're a heck of a hunter, and I remember some of the bucks you've shot in the past. I have confidence in ya:D
Today was a bit slower sit for me. Had a yearling come in at about 15yds quartering away. Let her pass wishing she was a year or two older. Saw a few on the way out, but that was it. Tomorrow I think I will take the climber to another part of the property I haven't hunted in almost three years. |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Ben sat with me and filmed in my honey hole this evening.
We saw at least 7 doe/fawns and 12 sightings total. No antlers though, yet to see an antler this year but it's what the 3rd day....LOL No worries. ;) We took some video and photos if ya'll are interested. http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=3087842 |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
rybo, i feel your pain....hang in there man...
i slept in this morning...since i had mono a couple years ago colds REALLY kill me...i was exhausted and knew i couldnt get up....and i didnt....slept clear till 11..got up and messed around a bit and was curled up in a ball snoring by 12 or 1 lol....got back up, showered and felt great and headed for the woods....opted to hunt over the scrapes and rubs i found last night coon hunting...its right across the road from my honey hole and thats where i was parked...wind was PERFECT for it, and dangerously borderline bad for the honey hole...so i figured id give it a go...settled in about 4...spot looked better and better the more i looked around..found a couple smaller rubs...nice trails with fresh droppings...crabapples scattered about...a bit after 5 here comes another hunter...walked right down the trail with all the rubs and scrapes on them...he was being quiet and passed right by so cant complain...didnt see any deer....talked to him after the hunt...he seen a 3pt mon or sat and his buddy seen the 3pt and a monster mon or sat sparring...he got the monster on camera...had cameras in dang near every woodlot possible from what it sounds like...even my honey hole hill!!! said all he got on film up there was a couple 8s and so other small bucks...he said he wont bother hunting up there coz he got other bigguns on film in other spots...(1 REAL close to the funnel i was in last evening...said its a big 11pt maybe 300yds away...so that funnel could produce big!) next time i'll be out will be here at school for the first time all year thursday evening....need to find a good tree yet so i cant morning hunt...pumped about that because of the fresh rubline i found when i was in there a while back... season is young...but i know how fast its gunna go....and im minus 2 weekends so thats gunna sting a little...though that lets my spots chill out a bit and the last 3 weekends aughta be good with the seeking and chasing kicking in right around there..... |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
Im back from Greece and had an unbelievable trip. If anyone has a chance to go there dont pass it up. Unfortunately I got sick on the 11 hour flight home and have been in bed for two days. As long as i beat this cold ill be back in the woods on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
Heres a few pics from my trip: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
awesome drhntr!! looks like a beautiful place!! get better quick!!! i had a pretty nasty bug last weekend!
|
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
What awesome pictures! Doesn't matter that you missed part of the season. Opportunities like that are few and far between, and I would have jumped on the chance anytime of the year. Welcome back!
As for me, I hiked in with the climber this evening for a spot on the property that would be decent with a SSE wind we were having. I haven't hunted this section for three years, but I only saw 4 doe. No shots again. Rained off and on, and then as I was hiking back to the truck, it started to rain pretty good. It was the first time I ever hiked in with a stand, and hiked back out with it the same night. |
RE: Official Team Elowapi Thread (15)
well guys....Its been a while but with school and work have had little time to sit. I went out last week and had a doe and 3 fawn come in....THe fawns were licking the ladder i climb up!!!
Hunted tonight and got my first look at a buck. He stayed out about 60 yards, but i watched as he made a rub line through the woods. Pretty cool as i have never seen that before. Its been pretty good for the year so far....deer sightings on a bout half of my sits!!! Keep it up team Good luck Pines |
