RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Hey Matt (my son) will be home on the night of Oct. 30th. The Navy approved his leave. He has to head back on Nov. 7th but at least we will get some time to hunt during the rut. He is pretty excited but I think I am more. Hunting is great but it is more fun him out there. We always have a good time. It will also mean I will get more time off during the rut as my boss will have no problem ok'ing the time since Matt is here.
Well I will be heading out this weekend. Still will slam a doe if a nice one comes by. We have to earn our bucks and any does we shoot will give us a buck tag good for this year OR next year. I want to make sure I have a buck tag to start next season. I will shoot up to 2 more does this year if I get the chance. |
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Haven't checked in in a while. Still haven't went hunting. The weather just broke and we are seeing 30's in the morning. I did check out my area a couple of weeks ago and boy the bucks have tore up lots of trees we've planted in the past couple of years. I plan to get out the 20th of October pretty hard and then the next Saturday after that. All in all, I should get in roughly 8 hunts before rifle season starts. Booooo! I wish sometimes there wasn't a rifle season!:)Hopefully we'll all have a nice buck before too long!
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
You haven't been out yet? Ouch. I know the heat does suck. I also know what you mean about the rifle hunting. I still go opening weekend with my Dad because that is the only time he hunts. He bought me a new rifle when we got the land back in '01 so I still take that out. Where I am at we have a 4 day gun hunt coming up the 18th - 21st this month. I have to wear orange to bow hunt then. It really does put the deer on alert but I hope they will forget all that when the rut starts.
Good luck team. |
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
I was out this morning and got caught without my bow in my hand :(It was 26 degrees this morning and overcast, and I couldn't find my gloves when I got out of my pikcup to hunt this morning. So I got caught without my bow in my hand when a brute of a 5x5 appeared at 22 yards at a scrape. Hopefully, in the morning he makes the same mistake, only this time I won't make a mistake.

Amazing how quiet they can walk sometimes. |

RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Congrats Nick, did you end up going out tonight?
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Nice doe there. Congrats on a great shot.
Well I got out all weekend (even in the rain) but no bucks. I got to think they will start running soon but we will see. A few doe are still running around but I am not seeing the numbers of deer I have in the past. |
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
thanks for the compliments. i went out last night but did not have any shots. i only saw two does. i may get out tomorrow night, but i will be hunting for sure wednesday and friday afternoons, and also thursday morning and afternoon. changing up the plans a little and taking a climber to a different property at least one of the afternoons. should have the best chance at a shooter buck there... how is everyone else doing?

RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Of course, I finally plan to get out there this Saturday and the weather is supposed to be almost 80 degrees. Oh well, I think I'm going to head to another spot then and save my honey hole for the rut and temp's drop. I really only hunt two spots and they are 70 miles apart. Good hunting on both. Its hard for me to not get out there but I think staying out of an area for when the time is right is the best move. I'll take quality hunts over quanity hunts anyday especially since I don't have any bucks patterned.

Hey Rattlesnake you out there? How are things going over in Sauk County. Pretty slow over by me but I am hoping things will start to pick up this weekend. Do you have a lot of gun hunters in your area that will be out this weekend?
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Just checkin' in guys, focus has shifted to pheasants and waterfowl since I tagged out. Time to go after some does soon.
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
I'm still buckless. Its been raining like 6 days non-stop here, everything looks like a lake. I start guiding pheasant hunters this weekend. Hopefully, in the AM tomorrow the wind will be cooperating and I'll get out.
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
I heare ya Rammer, same weather system is around here. Guiding pheasants - wanna be friends?
Just kidding, I am jealous though - I usually only get out 2-3 times per year for them (hunt just north of the ND/SD border) since I've gotta go over 100 miles to that area, and everything else I hunt is right around home. Fall is such a tough time of year: deer, upland and waterfowl. Too bad one of those couldn't be in the middle of summer, but oh well.... |
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
hey guys, hope things are going good for ya, its been unseasonably warm here...
But I did take a doe tonight, its the early blackpowder season, so I figured I'd shoot a doe if I got an opportunity. Nothing big, but should be good eatin! |
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
deadstick - I hate pheasants! LOL I'm so tired of guiding them it isn't even funny. I had another outfitter try to hire me out to guide waterfowl this weekend, I just about did that instead. Its still raining here, it will be almost impossible to get around this weekend. I put a big set of Mud tires on my pickup yesterday, and I got the mud tires put on the 4 wheelers. Everything is under water. Still going to deer hunt in the mornings, hopefully will tag out soon, I'm tired of sitting in the rain! [:'(]

RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Horrible weather here. Hope to make it out tomorrow but with 20+mph winds I don't know if I'll see much.
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Supposed to be windy here tomorrow and still some rain for tonight. I will still be going out as I think the rain is supposed to stop late afternoon. Good luck to all you that are getting out. Sorry to hear the Dakotas are so flooded. We got our floods here back in August.
Pheasants are fun to hunt. Not sure about guiding them though. I have not been pheasant hunting in years. Since my Dad purchased our 80 acres I pretty much do all my hunting there. With a nice cabin and out building we built it is hard to go anywhere else. |
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
weather is finally changing for the better here! i went out tonight in very windy conditions to a different property than usual but didn't see anything. we have a chance of rain tomorrow then cloudy skies for the rest of the week with the high being 62 and the lows in the upper 30s. its finally starting to cool off. i also just learned i may have a new piece of property to hunt. (thank god for having a lone wolf climber:D) i will try to get out wed thurs and fri this week as long as the wind stops.

RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Still no luk here either....This pheasant guiding is getting in the way of deer hunting [:@]

RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
No luck with the bow this weekend. I sat Friday night and Saturday and Sunday mornings. I went and joined the gun hunters on Saturday night. I wanted to be sure to have a couple more buck tags before this coming weekend and the start of the rut. Well I dropped two more does so now I have 3 buck tags good for this year OR next year. If (God willing) I was to even get a chance at 2 big bucks this fall I will still have a buck tag to start next season with. I did not have that this year.
So now it is bow only and I hope things will be rocking hard with the cooler weather we will be getting. Also I will be out this weekend 26-28 and then Oct. 31-Nov. 6.I won't be reporting much in that time so don't think I forgot about you all. |
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Finally got out on Saturday, it was probably the last hot day of the year. Scared a buck getting into my stand. I assume it was a buck it was alone and the huge scrapes that were around my stand. These scrapes looked like somebody dumped some mineral on the ground. Didn't see a deer after that. Did get a shot at a turkey though. So it wasn't a day lost by any means. I'll be out all this weekend. Good luck everybody on Team 36.

RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Well guys, good news and bad news. I shot my first ever deer this morning, not just any deer a fairly nice 8 pointer. The bad news is in the rush of it all and the adrenaline the last thing on my mind was take a picture with me the deer and my bow for the contest. Here is the picture I do have with the three necessary items. If the deer is not counted, no big deal I shot this deer for myself and just didn't think to take a picture. I double lunged him and he only ran about 70 yards!!! Enjoy.

RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Way to go redram! Hope he counts for the contest, I'm kinda doubting it since he isn't fully intacted.
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
If this deer doesn't count and I shoot another will the next deer count?
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
That is one fine buck for your very first archery deer redram. Why would this one not count??
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
congrats redram! I'll contact Rob to see if we can enter it... go ahead and score it and submit it... It looks like you have enough intact.
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
congrats tim. if they dont let it count who cares its your first deer. but, you should get to enter another buck if you kill one and they dont let this one in. we need our team captain to give the team hopefully good word on it now:D
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Very nice - and honest (it would have been tempting for me to throw on a camo shirt and take a pick in the backyard in front of a bush or something). Congratulations,
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Nice buck Redram! Congrats on your very first buck. It better be on our scorecard! :D
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Congrats on your first buck.:D Very nice deer. Do you have any pictures of you with him before you cut him up without the bow. You MIGHT be able to post both pictures and get a captains vote. You might be told no. They have made it a strong point that you know it is required. I hope they let it count. As for entering another one I don't think they will do that if they don't allow this. Also in the rules it says your first buck and if they hold you to the rule about the bow they will probably hold that one as well.
Regardless it is a great buck. Do you have the story that goes with it? Congrats again. |
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
RedRam -
Ive got word from Rob (contest moderator) to enter the buck. I'll probably have to start a thread where all captains vote on it. But dont worry, as your captain I'll make sure we get the points.. Again, congrats! |
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Way to go and congratulations on your first. I came real close yesyerday to adding a buck to the list. I had a decent 8 pointer cruise by around 4:00. He actually came by twice. The first time I counted only 6 points and that didn't make him legal. I thought for the size of the deer it was odd he was only a six. He came back exactly on the same trail he left about 2 minutes later and i grabbed the camcorder and filmed him for a brief time. He was in a hurry. He wasn't stopping for anything(steady walk). I watched the tape last night and he's actually an 8. Just couldn't see those brow tines while he was moving. Oh well there's still time for a bigger one to come along. Good Luck all.
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Thanks for the kind words guys! I'll get the score posted this weekend I left all the measurements in my buddy's truck and the deer is at the taxidermist.
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
Any word on the captains vote?
|
RE: 36 Official Team 36 Thread
2 evenings ago one of my archery hunting buddies stuck himself a 156" 5x5. They are starting to get some serious Pre-Rut action going on. I can't wait till monday when I'll get a chance to go out again! :D
