Yeah I've been out seeing quite a few good bucks as well. After Wednesday the weather is supposed to turn "unseasonably" cold here, I can't wait. They are talking in the 30-40s :DShould take care of the mosquitos anyway.

WE'RE ON THE BOARD!!!

Kind of a bitter-sweet weekend for me. I normall hunt my in-laws land, which is managed fantastic for deer and holds a lot of nice quality deer, but is 80 miles away (I also have a 3 year old and infant son). This year, my brother (his wife is due in 2 weeks) and I dedicated ourselves to summer scouting near where we live in the hopes of finding some quality land. We did, and scouted very heavy all summer long. I got game cams out about 3 weeks ago and we were getting lots of pics.

Bow season opens Friday, I have a consultant here in the middle of a big project and can't get out - it's killing me, but I wait until Saturday morning. Neither me nor my brother (his ground blind is about 1/2 mile away from my treestand) spot a single deer. Bummer, but great to be back. So along comes Sunday morning....

30 SECONDS from getting situated in my stand, there's a deer walking the trail in front of me (still dark, so don't know what it was). In the first 30 minutes, I have 4 deer come in. About 45 minutes into it, a 4x5 that I've got pictures of comes in and starts making a scrape, broadside at 20 yards. The only thing is, he rubbed his velvet off and I was set on getting a velvet buck this year if possible. Well, after about 2-3 minutes, I decide that the odds are very good that I may not get a shot at a better buck this season so I take the shot, and harvest the deer.

In total, I spent 4 hours this year in stand. In ND, I can shoot as many does as I want, but no more bucks. I was also unsuccessful in drawing a firearms buck tag (which can be taken with a bow). So even though the season runs through the end of the year, my 2007 bowhunting season is done opening weekend, my 2nd day out - kind of bitter sweet.

I don't have the harvest pics back yet, but here are some live pics of him a few days before I took him.

Quick question for you scorer guys for the contest. Since he's a 4x5, in P&Y he would be "grossed" sa a 4x4, and the 5th point would only come into play for deductions. However, everyone I know that does gross scoring is looking at total antler mass, which would include the 9th point. If so, do I also include a H4 (circumference measurement) on one side?

Rammer 09-04-2007 06:49 AM

RE: 36 Official Team PassThru Thread

deadstick - Congrats on harvesting a fine buck! My goal this year is to get done ASAP with my bow, at least with my buck tag. I have a double doe tag as well for archery.

RE: 36 Official Team PassThru Thread

Congrats DeadStick. As for scoring you would count the 9th point. I will do some checking about the H4 but I do believe it the rack has it you write it down. Then add it all up and that is the Gross score. That is the only score that matters. Just be sure to post each measurement in the scoring thread. Again congrats.

Well now we are on the board here is a couple that I have on my place. First picture was taken 45 minutes after I set the camera up. Guess he didn't care I was just there. Also it was raining pretty hard. Not sure how big he really is but I will be looking for them. Still gotta shoot a doe first and I did have lots of doe and fawn pics as well.

RE: 36 Official Team PassThru Thread

Ok WI, I don't think we can submit until 10/1 or something like that. I scored him at home using a copy of a P&Y scoring sheet from my 2006 buck and was very conservative (because I was more concerned about getting a realistic estimate of whether he'll make P&Y or not - because if he will, I want a full head mount, if not it's going to be European). I grossed him at just under 130, net of just over 125 (probably going to be sub-125 after shrinkage). The extra tine is around 2" and probably a 3" circumference so he's around 135gross or so (for the contest, but the 5th tine doesn't count even in gross for true P&Y scoring). But, I'll bring my score sheet in and do it right when it's time to submit him.

What's everyone elses thoughts, does your gut tell you he's 125" when you look at the harvest pic (the game cam pic is misleading due to the velvet still in)?

Deadstick way to go congrats! it looks to me about a 135 score.Great job at least you can still hunt for does.Do you hunt any other states?

RE: 36 Official Team PassThru Thread

Hey DeadStick scoring has started. There are like 3 guys on the score thread already so whenever you get it done post it. Just remember for this we use gross score. That is a dandy buck so give him all the credit he is due. Don't over do it but get it as best you can. If you have a score sheet you should be all set. Congrats again. Go out and shoot some does to put more meat in the freezer and enjoy the rest of the season.

Deadstick- Congrats on a great buck! Its great to be on the board! Id guess him round 130 gross...

Get him scored asap, cause you can enter him now... infact there are already 2 entries... Let me know if you need any help, and remember its the gross score that we care about.

again, awesome deer!

I don't know why it reads 2, there are 3....the first one pse's doesn't register as a thread. I don't know why, perhaps it had something to do with deleting a post or two that didn't belong on the thread.

Fantastic deadstix, great deer and I look forward to the score and entering him.:D

RE: 36 Official Team PassThru Thread

Hey Rich how is that scoring coming? Did some checking and you WILL do and H4 measurement for BOTH sides. The sheet says if the side does not have a G4 then measure the H4 half way between the G3 and the tip of the main beam. Since one side does have a G4 you do that one just like the other H measurements. There is not an H5 however on that side. Also remember that you include ALL measurements for this contest. Do NOT subtract anything for it. If you have any questions email me or shoot me a PM. I know others on here will help as well. I just want to make sure you get it entered right.

Is there anyone else hunting yet? I have 10 more days. Got to shoota doe firstbut I am hoping to get out a lot early to make sure I get that taken care of.

It's entered, wow there's a difference between Contest Gross and true P&Y gross on a nontypical measured as a typical (counting that extra point). Do you know if, like the guy mentioned in my thread in the main forum on the score, I get to use the H4 measurements even though there's not a G4 on both sides (in true P&Y scoring, not contest)? If so, thisbuck's going to be REALLY close to making 125. I was as accurate as possible, but a true measurer may get it quite a bit different.

My last year's deer that made it, I measured him at 140 gross, 133 net. The actual measurer came up with 136 gross, 132 net and he was very accurate (over an hour to measure the deer, making sure he measured tine length exactly, got the very minimum H between the G's, etc...). So, hopefully I am close on this estimate as well.

I bounced 2 deer off the passenger side of my brand new Dodge Ram tonite, both bucks, does that count for anything? :DDidn't kill either one I got slowed down to a crawl and they both ran smack dab into the side of my pickup, luckily I don't have any damage.

wihunter402 09-06-2007 07:16 AM

RE: 36 Official Team PassThru Thread

Deadstick I do think you get credit for the H4 as it does have it on the score sheet and says to use half way from the G3 to the tip to get the H4 measurement. Good luck with it and way to put us on TOP.

Rattlesnake are you going out on opening weekend? Do you have any earned buck tags from last year? I don't so I will be looking for the first bald deer to giveme a good shot and down she will go.

Rammer it is a good thing you were not driving some little car. Sounds like they didn't hit too hard so I hope they will be ok.

Congrats on your buck!! At Least one of us ND guys is getting it done!! :D I had seen Ramberg floating around the first weekend but didn't get to talk to him. Haven't heard of anyone killing any bucks in the areabut I've been stuck working for the most part.

Jason's holding off this year, his youngest son is bowhunting and he's helping him first.

Hey, did you see that monster 234" nontypical taken near Cogswell, ND? Check out nodakoutdoors for pics, it's unbelieveable.

Thanks on the condolences, funeral was yesterday and was a nice service.

Two days with no talking. Guess most of us only log in at work. Weather for me this weekend is Saturday (opener)sunny high 62 low 43. I know they can be wrong but I will take that if I get it. My Dad was out this weekend mowing around the cabin and cleaning up a few things. He saw a "nice" deer (he thinks doe) walk from the corn to the woods at 12:45 PM. Middle of the afternoon when I would normally be back eating lunch. The pics of the bucks I have on page 13 (or 12) were taken as well when I normally would not be out. Guess I better change my plan.

Ed that is great. I am sure most of our bucks are out of Velvet as well. Last year I got that 3 point with Velvet because it was my first ever chance. It just doesn't happen often in WI. Good luck with your big one Saturday evening. I hope he does stay on that summer pattern for just another few days for you.
