RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Thnx alot Jim, and thnxfor the VERY good info also regarding tracking him.
Yeah Im sure hes hunkered down hard now.He has to com out sooner or later |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
FYI I entered my buck and was a little suprised at the score which was 127. I re measured 4 times. I would have guessed a little less but his G2s and G3s were decent, he had decent main beam length, decent width. Everything was perfectly symetrical except his left G4 was smaller than the right by an inch and change.

Diesel..Great Job excellant recovery..I haven't read the details yet, but I will.
Fear Not, as usual I have a story.... |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2428556 <--- Heres the long version.
Short version..misjudged distance.. Buck showed up just after climbing tree and pulling up pack and bow at 1:00 pm. Didn't have rangefinder or anything out. Shot low, my first ever Whiff..judged distance at 25 he was 34. Not the biggest I've seen but I was not gonna pass him Cost us an estimated 115" main frame 8..possibly some junk. |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Just look at it as a chance for a 140-160 buck this week. ;)
We're looking for snow tonight how about you? |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Yeah flurries are possible from what i've heard.
I dunno about the 140-160 this will be the last good weekend coming up..After that is the special youth gun weekend 17th and 18ththen regular gun season. So time is a factor. I'm not one to buy into the theory don't shoot the last day what you'd pass up the first. I do spend the early season right up till about now looking for a good one..But I'll tell ya, at this point don't let a 100 inchercruise by..[:-] |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Oh man, that stinks GR8 but Im confident you will get one. Get GregH to put the "Good VIbe" whammy on ya. Just stay at it. I saw something this morning that I took pictures of and video'd that shocked me. You guys know the deal, Im in the woods almost every day from Sept to end of Nov normally, I put several trail cameras out, so I see alot of the deer that Im hunting. But this suprise was a real treat this morning. I'll link it to the main board soon as I post it.
Oh, and I had a decent 120 ish 8pt right in front of mr for 20 minutes. I was grunting and was getting pissed he couldnt see me, was pretty cool. He was even looking right up at me at one point as I just kept grunting as he became more and more upset, was a GREAT morning, one I'll never forget. |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Come on Diesel..I'm hitting refresh like a crack addict!:D I'm guessing Piebald or Albino??
He was even looking right up at me at one point At least now, I have someone to blame besides myself lol, I've been looking for a scape-goat [:o] |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

That deer is great Diesel great pics god knows why some one would kill it,[:o]
I don't know why we are on page two. cold rain, no news any body hunting? |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
I went out tonight, saw some bucks chasing Does. Nothing big enoughthat I wanted to shoot. I took this pic today of this 8 pt I was messing with with my grunt call, was good fun. I drove the poor guy crazy because he could not figure out where that buck grunting was lol.

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Looks good Diesel, glad you are having a good time out in the woods. These 12-16 hr work days are killing me, I am ready to get back out there. That piebald is cool, I have never seen one in the wild myself. I think if I ever had the oppurtunity to shoot a good piebald or albino buck, I would probably get a full body mount.
Man Gr8, sounds like you have also had a good time on stand. Just stay after it, your time will come. Lets keep after em guys, prime time is here, lets not let it get away from us!!! |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Congrats D! He's a beauty!:)The action is picking up. I'vehadsomeclose calls.Sorry I'mnot on here muchits been crazy around the house between hunts and when I get to the pc its onlyto check the wind before hitting the woods.
|
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Yeah it's gonna be not much to report from me..on weekdays with time change. I get in an hour or so in the evening. More often than not I'll not see much!
|
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
You never know GR8, things can happen in seconds. I cant recall how many times Ive loweed my bow and had to pull it back. I'd rather take 30 minutes in a stand the next 3 weeks than not at all if that was my only option.
Tonight was probably one of the dumbest and most dangerous decisions to stay in my stand Ive ever made. We had some real strong winds here today, branches were coming down, a few trees went down and the tree I was in was rockin and rollin. I did see some does and a big turkey. Ive hunted in windy conditions but today was pretty hairy, I kept thinking its going to settle down any minute. |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
waayyy to dang windy to hunt today, lol....20 to 30 mph winds gusting and changing directions....i decided not to disturb my area and just take the girlfriend out for dinner instead.[&:] hopefully itll pay off by not speadin my scent in there..
rifle season opens saturday which is when ALL chaos breaks loose, full rut and bullets flying everywhere. Rifle huntin is a big tradition in my family around here, but since the leaves still havent really fallin yet, ill probably have a bow in hand instead on saturday am. why not when i can only see bow shooting distance through the woods anyway. hopefully i can get one or two more afternoon hunts in before rifle season opens. |

I generally can get to my local spots, by 4PM so by the time I get dressed and in the woods. (depending on the spot I hunt on local farm) It's 4:15-4:20 ish. Should I take the extra 5-10 minutes to use my climber or just ground hunt. Sunset is 5:15 depending on skies I can stretch that to 5:40 on a clear day. The 2 places I have ladder stands are basically bust now..Cuz that farm he's taken down all the crops and the fields are plowed under! The other farm (my best chance) still hasacres and acresof standing corn! |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
By the way Diesel....ummm didn't you just ask me late last week if we were still doing "the" picture.
Even Jim reminded you on the day of your recovery to make sure you had "everything" needed for the team pic. ![]() |

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
I just got done reading your post on the main board, what an INCREDIBLE encounter, I probably would have been shaking life a leaf out of excitement. How many teams have had 2 encounters in 2 days with piebalds?? We should get bonus points hehe. Man, Im going to say a prayer for you tonight, I really hope you get a shot at him. I need you to email me your address, I have a present for you BTW.
I know, I blew it with the Germ Warfare pic. I'll take it with my next buck, I just forgot, especially after having a rough night worrying if I would find the deer or not, when I did find him I was so excited I just forgot, shame on me. |

It's funny, some people pray for everything..and nothing wrong with that. I like to save my prayers for the big things, like loved ones health, etc...
But honest to goodness I caught myself with a prayer on my lips to get a shot at this buck. I dunno if I ever said it, but the thought was right there and I was very conscious of it!! I've seen big bucks that when they slipped out of sight..it was like rats! But watching what could be the most unique deer ..it was so surreal. |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Well guys I blew it tonight! I had a real nice buck, cant really give an accurate number because I didnt have much time to look, but am gussing around 140ish bust me tonight. I had squirrels all around me this evening particularly behind me and to my left. I heard that noise you hear when leaves are crunching like squirrels make, a fast crunch crunch crunch, stop, repeat. I had just looked back that direction for the 40th time a minute before to see the same 2 squirrrels chasing each other, so this time I didnt bother to look immediately, and stood up to strecth, once I stood up I the crunching stopped and I had a feeling I just messed up, sure enough I had a big boy 10 yards looking up at me. He didnt run off but knew something was wrong, he slowly turned around and walked away. You would figure after 26 years I would know better lol. Wasnt as painful being as I was lucky enough to get a buck last week, but still mad at myself for being careless.

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
I'm trying again in the morning good luck guys..............:)
|
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Boy they do have that knack to show up when your not ready!
Good luck Jim..'bout time you tag something huh?? ;) I sat last night, near where I saw the piebald. I had to skirt the area, as the wind is screwy! I saw 2 deer at dark..1 definitely wasn't himthe second can't confirm or deny anything. It was DARK. In fact I didn't see them till I was halfway down the tree and the bow was on the ground. 2things to add to last nights hunt! I came into work early so I can leave at 3:00.. I hit GRIDLOCK on the highway and sit there for 25 minutes! Sheesh! Total gain 5 minutes +/- Second thing is..how hard is it to predict wind direction. I mean I can see messing up on whether it's gonna rain or not..but wind direction? They call for one thing and it's virtually theopposite in reality! |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
i.'m in a tree now typing on my phone i'll keep your up dated i bumped getting here thats its wind sucks swerling
|
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
rain and a grey squrrel very cold one big doe i'm
|
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Hang in there Jim. I just got out, 36 degrees and raining all morning, had to get in and get dry. Had 2 adult Does walk down one of the intersecting trails Im hunting over, I thought for sure they would have some bucks in tow but none came thru. Saw a button buck chasing a yearling doe. Saw an absolute hammer walking out. He was bedded down by himself oddly enough. Going back out soon.
GR8, wouldnt you know it, that stinks man. Maybe you can still get out a bit early. |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
I'll be cutting out early, a nice wind here..norain yet! Just shot some practice shots at lunch!
Stay out there Jim.. I'd rather be out there, wet and cold than here! Dry and warm with this big hot cup of coffee. Ouch..burned my tongue!! |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
still here guys! ive come sooooo close to dropping several dfferent 6 pointers, but have let down waiting for atleast an 8. the last buck i drew on, was actually from the ground. i left the stand with about 2 or 3 monutes of shooting light left in hopes of not being pinned into my treestand with deer below. on the walk out, i cross the fence into a 20 or so acre field. andi realize a buck is about halfway across it. it looks up and obviously spots me, staring right at me. but then it continues to SPRINT in my direction, i guess thinking i was a doe??????? i kneel down behind a scrub bush tree ( i was on the very edge of the field), nock an arrow, put on release and get ready for this guy. he enters the briar patch thicket to my right, and walks down a little water drainage ditch towards the woods, and my treestand. he was so close i could hear his feet sloshing in the water. he emerges from the thicket not ten or fifteen yards away. im at full draw on one knee, in plain sight of him. i held off on the shot because i couldnt really tell the caliber of the buck. i had a perfect shot and could have definitely smoked him, but i dont want to let up on my standards after this long. he was definitely a six, and looked to be at or maybe a hair past his ears, but i couldnt tell if he had brow tines which would make him an eight. so luckily he never looked over my way, hopped the fence, and headed into the woods not 10 yards from my treestand.
im happy with the decision and will be back out saturday morning.it is the opener for rifle season here, which means all hell will break loose, but i have chosen to continue with my bow as of right now. big decision for me, but i just want one with my bow THAT much more. hopefully itll pay off. |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Wow, thats a tough one TE, great ethics and Im impressed with your willpower anddecision. All good things come in time.

|
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Hehe, poor Jim freezing his buttox off. No pain no gain, I had to get out so you are tougher tham I am lol, I have to go to my sister in-laws Engagement party. I saw another massive buck this morning, he would not come to rattling, grunt, bleats, nada. That was all I saw all morning. Yesterday and today were suppossed to be the 2 best days of the year to hunt according to a MD biologist, I saw more action the morning of Sept 15th than I did on Nov 9 and 10th morning and evening hunts put togethertogether, who would have thunk it???? Moved a stand to a new location, hoping for some closer shots to a highly travelled lane coming from a bedding thicket. Im not sure what the heck is going on, this has to be one of the screwiest ruts Ive ever seen.

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
Guys, just keep on keepin on, it will come. The more time we put in the stand, the betterour chances. I am still itching to get in the woods, 2 more days baby, can't wait.
My dad picked up my game cam, I had seton a feeder, yesterday and it had the first mature buck I have seen on camera all year. Which is very unusual, I normally get a lot of good bucks on camera in Sept. and Oct. It is not a monster, but it is mature, probably 3 1/2 yr old. It looks a lot like the 8 I shot last year, not sure if I would shoot him or not. If he goes another year he would definately be a good one. There is onething I know, there are a lot bigger deer in the area, I just haven't seen them on camera yet. When I get off of work and start hunting, you all might not hear from me much. I will be hooked up with hunting, building the house, and trying to fit my wife into the picture somehow so she doesn't feel left out. I promise one thing, if I get one you will know about it. Good luck guys!! Here are 4 pics of the buck I was talking about, like I said not a monster, but he is the first mature deer on camera this year: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread
![]() ![]() Well I can say it really felt nice to have “that” feeling again after a couple years. The day started with a phone call from a friend that invited me to his dad’s 70acre place for an evening hunt. I took up the offer of course because of the numerous small bucks I’ve been passing by on a regular basis in my stands. We walked the entire property so that I had the layout and then was asked where I would like to hunt. I replied “the 350 acre property we didn’t stink up you mentioned anyone can hunt adjoining the place” So I took the climber, blindscoutingup into a beautiful ridge top that was calling my name since I laid eyes on it. After an hour of speed scouting I found my tree and at 4:30 spotted this guy moving down to a green field below. Two quick grunts put him right on track and this is where the story gets stupid. I had my camera phone out instead of the bow and was taking a wonderful 5yd shot through the view finder, when I realized I should prolly change weapons, this isn’t a spindaly eight after all. I’ve been pressing my luck with only a week left. I lowered the bar a bit which I never thought I’d do, but circumstances at home with the new lil’ man chillin without me sometimes do funny things to a man with too much tree time on the books. If there is such a thing! Anyway I grabbed the Bowtech and drew back which made him edgy and trot about twenty yards away. The shot was a quartering away that I felt confident in and took. After the arrow hit hide it looked less than perfect to me and I was a bit shaken as he ran the one hundred yards before falling over. He laid for 20 min with his head up as I watched through the binos and then got up and walked out of sight. I left the area hoping he wouldn’t be far not knowing exactly what to think. First light I had two friends at the bed I last saw him lay, and to my delight looked towards the direction he walked with the glasses and noticeda brown blob. It was him! He walked just out of sight and fell over the night before. The 100grn Muzzy was planted to the feral end into the heart. A bad looking shot that wasn’t so bad after all.I’ll get a nice European mount done on him, that will look sharp! |
