ill be out sat mornin, but behind the camera....o well, i guess it still beats sleepin in. i might get some time behind the bow saturday or sunday afternoon.

then monday or wednesday ill beputtin in some time behind the camera for Dave, the owner of lost river game calls. hes a great guy, and he definately has been very gratious to me, so im actually lookin forward to the hunts with him.

weather seems as if it might be breakin and coolin down, boy if it does it sure will get me fired up. this HOT weather has been depressing me and actually kept me from goin a few afternoons because i didnt feel like bein miserable.

on a non hunting note, i just upgraded my mower and trailer this week, and i mowed for lots that used to take me 4.5 hours in only 2 hrs 15 minutes. definately increased my hourly pay;)
heck i might be able to afford more huntin goodies now...well after i pay off my mower and trailer[&o]

Ok guys well I grabbed up another 96 acres yesterday..Have never set foot on it and know (ZERO) about it other than the area looks good. It's nearly impossible to drive around just the guys driveway is a mile long.

Any of you guys map readers who like to look for spots? Based on "lay of the land" ?

PS the above spot won't be used right away..I'll check it out when I feel I need to give my other areas a break

Heck ya Mantis, that is awesome, Congrats!!! :D:D

Sounds like you will a huntin buddy in a few years.

Still waiting on Oct 5th guys, I will update you all when I start getting some action. My game cam situation has slowed tremendously. I had to send the Cudde off about 2 weeks ago and they said it would be a 3-5 week wait. That is a long time to wait for a camera you pay top dollar for and expect to work without any problems. The stupid thing just quit writing to card. I do have a Stealth cam cam out that I bought earlier, but I have been having battery problems with it. I will be putting a lead acid 12 volt on it my next time out. So, needless to say, sorry I don't have any pictures to share. Just hope in about a month or two I can share a picture with me in it.

Take care and good luck guys!!!

Man, glad the wife is okay Nick, and hope she has a health and speedy recovery.

Didnt see one deer, Ive only been completely skunked on seeing deer less fhan I have fingers on 1 hand in the last 10 years at this property. I put a camera out about 800 yards away from where I hunt in hardwoods above what is now our completely dried up creek3 days ago just to see what the heck these deer are doing since they have seemed to have gone AWOL. Well, corn was out for 3 days/nights and not 1 picture on the camera, it is on a main trail also. Im wondering if they have gone to another property for water?? We have 2200 acres and its about 1.5 miles long with a road bordering the 2 long sides of the property and there is now not a drop of water on our place. Yikes

GR8, any updates?? I moved a stand to the complete opposite end of our property, about 1 mile, where the creek enters our property. Set up at the creek bottom. Saw 8 Does in the woods, and I came out about 15 minutes early so I could glass the beans. Bingo, deer were all over it, must have seen 30 or 40 deer including bucks.Im not sure if its because they are closer to the water source, or what, but at least I found some deer. I walked up the dried up creek bottom yeserday, was pretty amazing to see what used to be a 2 foot deep fast moving creek that was 10 to 15 feet wide completely dry.

Nick wish the wife the best..and we're hoping for a speedy recovery!!

Diesel and team.... Well Wish I had a big story..Truth is as I sit here at 1:30 Sunday Afternoon. I've sat in a couple different places..good places..Places I expected action at any time. I've logged right around 12 hours on stand with the proper winds..scent protection etc..I haven't seen a hair! Well not true Squirrels, Turkey..listen to the Coyotes sing me away last night..but0deer.

I did move one this morning in the dark but I was still acloser to my truck than my stand. I was back in there aways.

Debating on this evening..I want to go to the deer factory (just a local farm) to at least get some action..but we have a south wind that makes it confusing..I'd have to set up on the backside of the woods .....hmmmm uhhhh....just dunno the plan as of yet!

GR8, Do you have a topo of your new area? If so, post it or send it to me and I'll take a look. Otherwise, on new property I always start looking at the saddles and try to determine which ones will be used to move between food and bedding areas.

I try and get a pic up later of the ariel Firemedic.. I'd be glad to hear any input as it's new land..That I haven't set foot on!

As for last night .nothing to report...plenty of squirrels no deer..I may have too much corn this year..at least early! Hmm..can't make it out tonight and the weather's gonna keep getting hotter.

Its hot with a south wind. [:'(]

I go to the surgeon Monday to see about getting the tendons reattached. And a couple small bone chips removed. If I have to I will take my bow riser with me so the cast will fit my on grip.

We have acorns every where ,that black bear is keeping the deer out of my corn. I have my camera on an oak grove ,I'll check it in a couple of days.

I'm going to head up to the U.P. and grouse hunt for a couple of days later this week. I can still carry my O/U 20 with out much trouble.

went sat morning. finally a chilly morning so we took advantage of it but didnt see anything. We saw one deer as we climbed up, but it was about 50 yards out feeding, and it was too dark to ttell buck or doe. it fed out of sight around the corner before we continued up to the stand. Im gettin antsy about not seeing those big bucks, but atleast i know two bucks are still in the area.

I parked at the top of the hill probably 600-700 yards away from our stands. As soon as i got out to get dressed, i heard bucks fighting. idk how to explain it, but its that unmistakable noise that those of you who have seen or heard it know what im talkin about. it came from a very dense pine thicket that i know deer bed down in. My friend didnt hear it, nor did he believe me, so i told him to shut up and listen. sure enough they went at it again about a minute later for probably 20 seconds. idk if you can tell much about the size of bucks from hearing them fight, but it sounded like pretty big heavy racks. i say this because i dont think little basket racked 6 or 8 pointers could make those loud pops. idk but it sounded like they had some mass to them. sound came from about 600 yards away from our stand too.

pretty positive sign, just hope they show themselves during daylight sometime this season.

Ok gonna try this map posting Firemedic..I'm not too good at it. I have some ideas but didn't mark anything as I don't want to bias the group.. Pic a few stand locations ..Blind..as I know NOTHING about what's in there yet.

Total it's about 96 acres..fields are off -limits as thats the property line. The red star is nothing other than the starting point I enterred. The yellow outlined area is what I'm assuming to be hunt-able even the landowners were wishy washy on any real property markers other than the dirt road just below my southern line and the fields.

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

Definately check the corners of the fields on the east side, especially if they still have crops or browse.Generally, I try to be 40 yards from the field so if the bucks are holding up til dark I may get lucky and get a shot. I marked the north and south of the pond because it acts a natural obstruction rerouting traffic as well as a water source. The creek bottom is hard to say, I would probably just walk the entire thing looking for low banks and the easiest access to cross. Find those areas and you should find what we call "slides", those beat down areas on the banks were the deer cross.

I have an area right now were the deer come down one slide, walk the creek bottom for 40 yards and then go up a steep bank on the other side. I haven't figured out why, but they are breaking the path of least resistance rule. There is plenty of cover for them to come out of the creekdirectly across from where they enter and itsa heck of a lot easier.

D,

Flying intoBaltimore Thursday morning. Staying downtown (inner harbor), got any suggestions for dinner Thursdayor lunch on Friday? Maybe a local seafood place or something? I've been to one place in Fells Point with all you eat blue crab and the big seafood restaurant in theshopping area on the inner harbor. Fells Point was pretty good and not outrageously priced, the other was OK but seemed to be a tourist trap. If you know of any local pubs (irish/scottish) that would be helpful too.

NO shooters yet..I did see 3 bucks last night. (2)1.5 yo and one 2.5 smallish 8 pt.. Along with 18 Turkey that I filmed for 9+ minutes stroll by me.

The bucks were not togther per-say but they were traveling within 5-10 minutes of each other. At least 2 were bedding in the same general area (which is a known bedding area) that I set-up 125 yards off of.

Sounds like your in the right neighborhood. Do you have acorns or is corn the only feed?

I checked my camera last night ,one picture in a week. [:'(]

GR8atta2d 10-03-2007 06:52 AM

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

Jim that general area..Is off a bedding area..I set up 125 yards from it. Once the deer leave the beds, the Corn is the first stop then down the line to the beans (same field) and then probably off to either another 55 acres of corn or the Oaks..I'm betting the oaks..I can't hunt that area. (ok I can hunt a small parcel that they cut through) Which I'm saving for chase time.

Based on camera evidence I know of 8 bucks that use the bedding area. None are jaw-droppers..But hopefully a big guy will come in to kick butt.. There is a rumored GIANT that patrols the area. I have not seen him but the farmer and a good friend who live on the same road..tell me the tales. The stories are priceless.."he avoids the corn cuz his rack is too wide to fit in the rows"..I know could be BS..if not for the fact that his Daughter told me she's seen him and it's the biggest buck she has EVER seen..Her I believe.

Firemed, try going to Federal Hill, great places there like Cross Street Market for seafood, or McGirks for grill stuff.
You are welcome to hunt with me if you like bud while your in town, just get yourself a license and c'mon. I work until 2 or 3PM and usually get home around 3 or 4PM, I cant hunt this Saturday, and we are not allowed to hunt Sundays in MD, butI should be able to make it out akmost every weekday eveing. Im going to check out my second property tonight to see if I see any more deer activity as my big property is just absolutely dead right now, maybe because its almost 90 everyday, my creek is bone dry, and I have a feeling most of the deer have just up and left and are staying closer to a water supply.

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

Just checking in guys. Today was my first day out. It was a busy morning and I saw 12 does and 4 bucks. I also pulled up the bow on one of them, which was about a 100-110" buck with split brows. The others ranged from about 40"-80". I got to see two of those bucks do some sparring about 8 yards from me. It was intense. At the same time 5 does were about 40 yards to my left and those bucks were about 8 yards to my right and they wouldn't leave. I couldn't move for about a whole hour. Then after they finally leave, the smallest of the four bucks I saw came in and decided to bed down next to me. Eventually I had to get down and just moved and he saw me. He must not have been able to make out what I was because he just stood, stared and walked away.

However, tonight was a different story and I didn't see a single deer. Oh well. I will be going back out Friday. Hopefully I have some good luck and I hope you guys do to.

Well, I went to my back up property today accross the street from my house. Saw 30+ deer feeding on acorns from 5PM until dark and were all around me. I had a 130 class 10 pt come by me at 40 yards, but a 150-160 class symetrical 12 pt bruiser that had to weigh 200+ was behind him and a few yards further away or I would have tried to get a shot at the 130 class buck. I watched them for 40 minutes feeding through the hardwoods, my heart sank as they walked further away. Was a GREAT evening. Hopefully I will get some more opportunities at the big boy. Im going to have nightmares about this big buck. Im going to stay out of there tomorrow and do some practice shooting and go back Friday.

Im not 100% sure but I think this may be theslob I saw tonight. This pic was from 2 years ago and was about 40 yards from where my stand was tonight. I am trying to find pics of him from last year,or ones I think was him where he was abig 10. Never saw him many times in daylight, but I dont hunt this property that much either, I often ask myself why lol. I do about 10% of my hunting on this property and it has lots of decent bucks, and its litterally right across the street. Im going to start putting more time in here especially after the amount of activity I saw tonight compared to my bigger property the last 2 weeks.

First off Amazing Mantis..Babies are simply unbelievable..and it gets more fun everyday. I agree Mom looks great..glowing with the love of motherhood! Congrats again.

Diesel sounds like quite the night..and a few bruiser bucks to boot..I can't wait till I pass on the 130 because I see a bigger one behind. But in that situation you just have to hold out!

Vogt you sound like you got some action happening too. Can't wait till we get one on the score sheet.

It's only a matter of time...I didn't hunt yesterday. I had to pick up some broadheads..(I lost one and destroyed 1 in practice) and I had to fletch some arrows..put on some 2" blazers with 8 degree helical, man are they flying awesome! I did drive down the road near my honey hole at dark and we saw 2 deer of unknown gender.

Plan to get out tonight..still planning strategy..have to check weather (hot [:'(]) and wind direction and start planning. I can't wait to check out that new area ya'll helped me with, this weekend, even though again they are calling for mid 80's..[:@]
