ORIGINAL: MILLERTIME10 I was just doing a little studying on the controlled hunt I got drawn for and came across this page. This is a page with pictures of the all time greats that are on the controlled hunt area I will be hunting. I am sure some of them aren't still alive, but it just shows the potential that is in that area. Thought I would share it with you all. RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
Gotcha Diesel. Either way, I took it in jest. I have tobe in Emmitsburg 10/5-10/7. However, I could extend my stay either side of that weekend if you happen to be planning to hunt already (no expectations on my part and don't feel any obligation on your part). I just thought it might be fun to meet and hunt with some new friends. Thats reminds me...I really need to make it a point to meet KodiakArcher. :D

I'm hunting with a 2006 Diamond Victory, Easton Axis ST 400 and 100gr G5 Montecs.
Question...I saw the poll in our threadthis afternoon, but couldn't figure out what it was for. Can anyone enlighten me? |
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
Silver ,I used to shoot a Jennings Arrow star what a great bow I ended up giving it a friend of mines son and has not only shot his first buck with it he has a couple of does also.
That bow was as smooth as silk to draw and sat perfectly in your hand after the shot. It is a great bow. |

RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
Hey guys went out on the Atv and hung a trail cam yesterday on the edge of my newly aquired property (permission).
I saw 2 bucks while looking for a spot to hang it. The first was a nice 8. I know they look bigger in velvet but he would be tempting. the second had huge spikes and little nubs for brow..umm bumps. He let me drive the quad past him at 15 yards laying down. When I circled left he stood up, and I realized that was just about where I wanted the camera so I made the circle complete and he just watched me. When I stopped he bolted. Amazing how they'll let you get so close when they feel hidden. This property is pretty back in there. There is a big soybean field that can't be seen unless you are back there. My plan is to go back in Saturday early evening and get the camera and then sit back from the field till dark and see what emerges. Should be fun! |
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
Oh man, very cool GR8.Sounds like its going to a fun evening. Its only going to be in the high 70s this weekend, should be a nice cool evening to sit back and enjoy the show. I'll be going out Sunday and yanking my cameras for good, or at least until the pre rut starts around the end of October.

RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
Sounds like a good day to me GR8, Thats one thing I do miss about Kentucky and Kansas is glassing the Bean and clover fields in the evenings.
Its mostly big woods where I live now. I talked to my friend in Kentucky yesterday, said He's been watching 4 in the bottoms that would make book, and one that will go B&C. SoI may make the Sept trip after all, if I dont score then I still have Nov in KY. Man I gotta tell you guys, Hunting Ky in Sept is nothing nice! Between the Heat, Ticks, Chiggers, and Skeeters it can test your will, and some of you know what Im talking about. Hay Diesel, I see where you have GSP's and are thinking about changing to Labs, Just to let you know, we have been selling a few ofour Rone, darker colored pups to Guys that Duck Hunt, Said they get the best of both worlds with the GSP's! |
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
Silver,my best pure hunting GSP I ever owned, Gunner(Gunners Flying Warlord) was a swimming fool. I would train him all season and in the summer, we would use ponds and lakes with water deec's so he didnt over heat. GSP have partially webbed feet so they are built for being around and in some water.
Seems to be the trend to cross train and hunt different breeds, labs for upland birds, pointers for water retreival, as long as the dogs and owners are happy then its all good. Nothing like watching a dog do what it was bred to do though, watching genetics and Mother Nature in action in pups is a pretty awesome sightno doubt. |

Just click on the link: http://www.mcaapcontrolledhunts.com/All_Time_Greats.htm hows about a little explanation. O yea, and one thing i did learn from that site, is that there are some MONSTERS in that area, best of luck. In order to hunt a controlled hunt area, you must put in through the Oklahoma State Wildlife Dept. with a $5 fee prior to a certain date, normally mid May. There are several controlled hunts offered in Oklahoma, but this is the only one that is traditional bow only. I enjoy the challenge and like shooting a recurve, that is why I applied for it. It is very difficult to get drawn for this hunt b/c so many people put in for it. They also offer gun, rifle, bow, youth, doe only, and buck onlycontrolled hunts. You can also draw out for turkey, elk, and antelope. Here is a website to explain it a little better than I do: http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/controlhunt.htm |
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
ORIGINAL: GR8atta2d Millertime.. I do remember "pitch fork" that was a great buck. Didn't you sleep in your stand the night you took him? Thanks Gr8, but no, I didn't sleep in the stand that night, but I was planning on it. He came in just before last light. I had him patterned coming in after dark and just before light in the mornings on my game cam. I didn't want to bump him of my plot, so I decided to spend the night on stand hoping he would stick around long enough for legal light the next morning. Luckily he came in that evening with 2 minutes left of legal shooting time. It sure did save a long night on stand. |

Well we have a team with one buck down already. when can you guys start ? And how hard do you hit it before the rut begins?
What are we looking at for personal goals? I don't live in an area of monster bucks but we have some nice ones and I will be pretty picky for most of the season. Good luck ,Jim |
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
My season starts Sept 15th. I usually hunt every day from Sept15th thru Decexcept Sundays, which in MD we cant hunt except for 1 or 2 days they allow Sunday hunting, seems rediculous to me. And then I usually slow down to a few days a week after Dec 7th or so. Im hoping for a 140 - 150" or better buck, but my goal is to take a 130 or better buck. I may not even shoot one, who knows but I will tell you this, I'll enjoy every minute of it regardless of what I get or dont get.
|
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
That sounds like a lofty goal ,good luck. I will be working on the lower end of your scale but the first two weeks of November really get good around here. I have a decant doe herd and they draw bucks form afar so you never know what will be available.
I haven't got any good pictures yet but my field (Six acres)of mixed plots is coming in great . The corn is exceptional this year & a small patch of turnips a rape has just gone wild this last week with the rain we finally got. My weak spot is a clover field of about two and a half acres is failing badly it's to late to replant and the rag weed is coming on,I'm thinking about over seeding it with winter wheat for this fall and so how the clover comes in next summer. I am open for suggestions if any one has any. |
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
Ohio Season Opens Sept 29th. I'll hunt evenings during the weekand morning & evenings on the weekend. Until rut and then throw in some all day sits.Lori (my wife) is real good about my Hunting. But there will still be days when I don't go, due to chores, obligations, or just Quality Family time..you know basically, Life!
I like the ealy season because the deer haven't been spooked to bad. But in the same breath I tend to pass up too may bucks, holding out for the monsters of the rut! Then small game comes in, yadda yadda yadda and good hunts get ruined! I have a unque problem this year. I have an abundance of land to hunt! With great potential. I'm worried I'll be spread to thin...again a great problem to have! I really need to take 2 doe off the one farm. Just because the guy goes out of his way for me. So I will dedicate alot of early season there. My Limits Well I say a 125" minimum....But I adjust on the fly for uniqueness etc. I will say for a fact that any buck I shoot will be worthy of putting on my wall. Last season I did not get an ArcheryBuck (got one with the gun though) I did take a doe with the bow in Ohio. It's not becasue I didn't have many opportunities it's because I'm too picky. Like Diesel (and probably everyone else) I just savor being out there! |

RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
ill be hunting come september 1st. weve got a bachelor group of 4 or 5 bucks pretty well patterned, and they are all shooters in my book. every evening weve been scouting they come out into the field al little over 100 yards away from my stand location. hopefully opening evening they will feed there way within 40 yards. in the group there are two 8s thatll go around 110 or so, a nine (pics posted) thatll probgo mid 120s maybe 130s, a 10 that ive been glassin that WILL score high 130s prob somewhere in the 140s if not higher, he is a brute. and the last deer kept feeding out of sight before i could ge the spotting scope on him for a real good look, it could be that 9 point, making it 4 deer, but from the glance i got of him, he struck me as a bigger deer than the 10, which would make it 5good bucks down there. i think im in heaven just thinkin bout sept 1.
Millertime, that sounds like a sweet setup and thanks for the explanantion. And i shoot a..... well just read below. |
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
September 15th not a whole lot of big deer here in western md but ill do my best. I go out every chance i get from sept 15 till season out. That is when the wife lets me go . Just kiddin;) Shes pretty good about that. No pics yet camera keeps screwin up soon as we get some worth postin we will. The one nice one we knew we had got Smacked by a car. But well see but u guys sounds like u guys got pretty good prospects. Gd Luck.

RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
Our season starts Oct. 1 here in Oklahoma. I will hunt off and on from that time until the end of Oct. It just depends on if I have one patterned or not. If I don't have a good buck patterned, I will play it safe and try not to bump anything that may be lurking around the area that I don't know about. Come Nov. 1 is when I get serious, I will sit all day and try to catch a cruisin buck that is pissed or in love, one. I won't shoot a buck unless he will go on the wall, that means that it is a possibility of me goingthe seasonempty handed, (other than the occasional slick head or mercy kills) but it is about the experience more than anything. I just love being out there and spending time in the woods. I haven't caught any good ones on camera just yet, so I may have to play it safe early on and try to put some meat in the freezer with a couple does.

RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
I just got done combing over some aerial photos and topo maps of a 320 acre lease I joined this year. So with that and the initial walk through the other day I came to the conclusion that if I stay away from the warn down four wheeler paths, a plethora of neon ladder stands and over hunted food plots I should have a slam dunk season in there.;)
I’m shooting a Bowtech Extreme VFT, Muzzy broadheads, Easton ACC arrows, APA Ultimate Twister rest, Spot Hogg Real Deal sight. Around here a 120 inch buck is something to get exited about and that’s where my bar is set though if it’s early and one shows, I’ll be torn between passing for the time being. There are 130 and 140+ running around but they’re few and far between. I doubt though that I’ll watch a 120 crewz on by cuz they still get my blood pumping and unlike some places they’re worthy of a shoulder mount in my house. My three week vacation starts October 29th and hopefully the baby is sleeping on a somewhat rhythmic schedule and momma is leveled out on the hormone plummet by then and I can get some serious tree time……Haaa like it used to be when I took a break from chasing tail and hit the woods for steak and horn. |
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
Season opens here in MI, Oct 1. So Ill give you allthe bad news first. I have filled 3 tags in the last 10 seasons here innorthern MI. The good news is, they were all 130class bucks (good bucks for this area) and I am over due! Also my success ratio is much higher in Kentucky and I already posted how things are looking down there, and RutNut is keeping his Eye on a couple of Big Ones in MD for us.
I have never needed to fill a tag, and have a drawer full of unused ones. I am what you would call a tag soop connoisseur!:D Im expecting a Booner this year, but the facts are Im a sucker for an 8pt that will score in the 130's! |
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
Well it sounds like we are all pretty cool and quietly confident. Tembry's on some good bucks early. I know Diesel has some awful nice pics posted in the trail camera forum (and here). Millertime will find them big Oklahoma boys, I have no doubts about that! Mantis I know you'll put in the work to get back in there and find a dandy.(and a 120 is a dandy!) Nick that sucks about one getting hit. There still some good ones out there. ( which reminds me..I already got a doe this year. I hit one in March with my Blazer!)
Sliver I feel ya bro, sometimes our minds hold out for what the land doesn't possess. Something I struggle with that myself. This year we get our reward my friend! Keep the dialog coming guys! |
RE: 10 - Official Team 10 Thread
You know that saying, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I was after this incredible spikea few years agofor my second buck tag. He was a serious brute of a spike, he hadhuge bases, and like 16 inch antlers, he would probably not score above 50" but to me he was the trophy of a life time. Lets see if I can find pics of the cool lil dude. He would have been on my wall if I ever had a shot at him.
